Sorry for the double-post, but I have to say that I've often wondered that exact same thing. It seems like something very off-the-cuff. At the same time, knowing Tim Meltreger (who also co-wrote Lassie Did a Bad Bad Thing this season...) wrote it and what he happened to stumble upon in the process of researching for it (I assume that's how he got ahold of it; I don't really know.), it's just as easy to believe it was scripted.

Very true. I find it interesting that in almost every episode commentary they mention Tim's love of guns and his great ability to chew while acting and how proud he is of it.
