Ok, I have a really good topic for discussion. I was just thinking about this on the way to work tonight.
People always say that alcohol magnifies one's "true personality". I thought it was interesting that in "From Earth To Starbucks", we find out that Lassiter is a "happy drunk". Yeah he's drinking because he's depressed over his separation. But when he sees Shawn, not only does he call him over to the table, he tries to buy him a drink and compliments him (the famous "you astound me" line). Does this mean that, deep down, beneath the hard-ass exterior, he's really a nice guy?
Discuss!
LOL, well, I think I'm biased... but, yes, I do think Lassie (I originally typed Tim, LOL, and I'm pretty certain he is also a nice guy) is a nice guy. But, I will point out, that I definitely don't think that someone can't be a hard-ass and a nice person. They may be more difficult to get to know and not make easy friends, but those they do they are true to.
I, personally, would find it difficult to believe that someone with such a strong sense of duty and right and wrong, such as Lassie, *wouldn't* be a nice guy. But I also see people as very multi-faceted and 'nice guy' can often be interpreted as such a one-dimensional characteristic. But, I may be a bit naive, and I think *most* people are generally nice and certainly *capable* of being nice... I consider myself nice, but that doesn't keep me from cussing under my breath (or not so under) at other drivers whose driving I do not approve of or from occasionally talking bad about someone else (sometimes without even intending to).
Again, this being said, I find it difficult to think that Lassiter isn't a nice person, I certainly think Lassie himself would consider himself nice to those (as long as they aren't criminals or bothering him).
Though... here's a question for discussion as well: Why do you think Lassie became a cop? To uphold the law? To be in charge? Because it's 'so cool' to have a gun and a badge? To have authority?
