THANK YOU for the screencaps! I love this pic of Tim O., great smile. Princess is THE screencap queen around here, but looks like she's been too busy lately to conduct the nightly screencap frenzy, and I for one miss it terribly. It's a lot of fun. Can't wait until she's back.
"i loved how she played him into talking and when he was done it was like a little kid...he had his knees pulled up and he was smiling and then the comment 'i told you secrets i didn't even know i had!' "
Yeah, I loved that scene. I knew Shawn's mom was going to twist it around and work the truth out of him eventually. I also liked the scene where Cheif Vick is telling him he has to submit to the psych evaluation due to, in part, to discharging his firearm at a cat show. "For the record, I'd never shoot a cat. Unless it was approaching me in a threatening manner."
"the only thing that bothered me is when she tells him about having an eidetic tonal memory... that was a HUGE clue for Lassiter in the 'prove Shawn isn't psychic' crusade but he never puts 2 and 2 together."
I think Lassiter knows Shawn isn't psychic, but has a reluctant, begrudging respect for his abilities as a detective. I believe Lassiter really is secretly impressed by Shawn's deductive and observational skills (even though his ego would never allow him to admit it while rational). We see this in the pilot when he asks Shawn, "Seriously. How did you do that?" after trying to stuff Shawn in the car.
I think Lassiter dislikes Shawn not because he's faking the psychic thing, but more for the fact that an immature slacker could bypass and break rules and win every time. Lassiter seems to live his life by very strict codes, taking things very seriously and giving every endeavor his best effort, following rules "by the book" and "to the letter" because that's what one should do. His world is one of order amidst the chaos of everyday life. But when an eternal man-child that takes NOTHING seriously and breaks all protocol shows up and has nothing but success when doing so, it upsets Lassiter's world. He labors so intensely to do everything by the rules, which means he SHOULD win, deserves to win, because he "did it right". One is supposed to be rewarded and commended when they follow rules. Then Shawn shows up and steals his thunder with absolute minimal effort, and it really pisses him off. But when you get down to it, Shawn's extremely annoying methods consistently produce results, and he is extremely effective at catching bad guys. In the end, another murderer is behind bars and off the streets - and Lassiter, as much as he hates to admit, respects that.
It's because of this that I think Lassiter is no longer actually trying to prove Shawn isn't psychic to everyone else. As annoying as "Spencer" is to him, he knows that if Shawn isn't allowed to work cases anymore, bad guys go free. I believe he's decided to tolerate Shawn for the greater good of society. I think Lassiter "put 2 and 2 together" a long time ago but has chosen to keep it to himself. I'd like to see this explored as a B story in an episode, great chance at character growth.
