TOPIC FOR THE NIGHT: Lassiter's evolution as a character - when did he quit being such a complete a$$hole?
During my time away from the internet, I decided to start watching season 1 again in an effort to find the episode where Lassiter "turned the corner" and quit being such a total "I hate Spencer" obstructive jerk all the time. I believe I have narrowed it down to a single moment in the series.
Before this scene, Lassiter only showed a few isolated moments of respect for Shawn. Case in point: the premier, where he's trying to force Shawn into the car. After Shawn reveals the true killer's identity, Lassiter stops, leans on the car next to Shawn, and asks, "Seriously. How?" But the real breakthrough for the character occurs in "9 Lives" where they break in on the killer trying to murder McNabb. Shawn manages to talk to the killer into making the mistake that allows Lassiter to apprehend him. Lassiter looks back at Shawn and says, "That was adequate, Spencer." In that moment, by the look on Lassiter's face, we see that Shawn has finally really earned his respect.
After that moment, the "group" dynamic has changed to the point where they have normal conversations like average people instead of constantly being dominated by "Get out of here, Spencer!" Sure he still says it, but not nearly as much. It is clear from that point on that Lassiter's demeanor towards Shawn has become more accepting and less obstructive. After that, Lassiter gives Shawn a case (even though he thinks it's funny to give him a case with a naked guy in a field), confides in him about his estranged wife in the bar, gets Shawn's bike back, etc. Lassiter becomes a much more likable character as a result.
WOW. I have way too much time on my hands. This rocks.

You rock, Texas! I was going to propose that this thread put together an essay (and I use the term lightly) about this very subject! It would be epic! We all just need to put some ideas out there, then we can arrange it into something that makes sense and post it.

So what's on for the screencap frenzy tonight?
Man, USA needs to reload the first part of season 3 on the Psych videos page. Those are the only episodes haven't seen yet. It just has most of the second half of season 3. I need my "fix".

Screencap frenzy is "American Duos" tonight. And I completely agree about the first part of season 3! I haven't seen most of them since they aired!

I think the real change began in 9 Lives, but became more apparent in Starbucks. Of course he covered it right back up after he gained a little confidence and was sober again, but that was just Lassiter at the time. I've loved seeing him progress since then, though. He's beginning to see them all as more of a team as opposed to a group of people he has to put up with to get through his workday. He's been realizing that when it comes down to it, these are people he can rely on even if he isn't going to choose to a lot of the time.
He doesn't show it always; he still feels he has to keep up appearances at least some of the time. When he does put up that gruff attitude though, you can almost always see right through it to know that it's just a front. I think he's still sometimes sincere with the b*tchiness, but who isn't? And Rome wasn't built in a day, he's still got time!
*Also...Texas! Getting in on the innuendo! I feel we are definitely the most provocative thread on this board. But who can really blame us?

Either it wasn't that way around here for the couple of years I was in school before you, or I was just naive enough to not get it at the time. I really am kind of hoping for the former given that I think naivete is something that's kind of slipping away these days.

That sounds much less disturbing than all the 6-year-olds in the US knowing waaayy too much! Though given the current demographics in my area, the truth is probably not all that much better. But hey, take what we can get, right?

Agreed! The initial evolution of the character is most evident in "Starbucks", as that's the first time we really see his human side.

Another big episode where we see a lot of the change in Lassie's character is "Lassie Did a Bad Bad Thing." I'd start listing reasons, but I have screencapping to attend to. Feel free to discuss this amongst yourselves. I shall chime in here and there.
