So the Sidepockets show started at 10:00, instead of 8:00 as I had posted it would... and instead of 9:00 like ZAC had posted it would... BUT... it was well worth the wait!! He did a full-band show, and those are usually the liveliest. This one was no exception, even before Gary Nichols joined him for the second set.
Zac's first set contained about half covers and half Zac Hacker originals... the second set was basically a jam session of covers with Gary Nichols. Zac and Gary feed off each other so well on stage, so it's definitely a lot of fun... both for them AND for us, the audience!
Zac started the show with the first of a few Keith Urban covers that he would play that night, "I Told You So", followed by a John Mayer song that I never did get a title for. He continued the set with 3 originals, "Never Been Loved" (my personal favorite from his album) and the album title track, "Get Your Love On" preceded his most popular original song, "If It Wasn't For The Whiskey". Going back to covers, he jumped into "Once In A Lifetime Love"... One of his less well known 'anthemic' songs, "Change" was next. If anyone's ever heard the song and wondered, it's actually NOT about a personal relationship, as he tells the story. It's a song about his personal relationship with God... The set continued with another 3 covers --- "All Right Now", "Easy Like Sunday Morning", and "Life Is A Highway", which concluded his first set.
After taking a short break between sets, Gary Nichols joined Zac and "The Hired Guns" as he's calling his band... Things never calmed down once they took the stage together, however... and the rest of the night became more of a blur than the beginning had been. I didn't get all the titles to all the songs they performed together, but they definitely play together extremely well. They 'duel' a lot... feuding like brothers the whole time... never wanting the other to outdo them. It definitely made for a fun evening of photographic opportunities! I'll be posting some of those pics as I usually do... I DID manage to get the titles to a few of the songs they played together, including "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me", "I Got A Woman (way 'cross town)", "Stupid Boy", "Red House", "Supersticious" and "Whipping Post". There was most DEFINITELY the well-reknowned Muscle Shoals funky blues soul sound throughout the entire jam session between Zac, Gary, and all of "The Hired Guns" who shared the stage that night!
If you missed this show, you missed one of a lifetime. Don't let it happen again, so be prepared to go to whatever length is necessary the next time Zac performs near you to be present. You never know just what you might witness. I'm glad I was there, and I can't wait for the next one!
