NBC wants 'Friday Night Lights' return
Thursday, February 21 2008, 11:24 GMT (06:24 ET)

By Dave West, Media Correspondent

NBC is hoping to give Friday Night Lights a third season by sharing it with other networks.

The show, which is a favourite of critics and has a cult following, could be broadcast across various channels to give it the support needed for a renewal.

Those said to be in talks with NBC are CW, Comcast Entertainment Networks, TNT and DirecTV.

A deal would see the show aired in different slots across channels in the model of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. It went out on USA Network first, then on NBC a few months later.

So what's the deal?!

I know fans were sending in Light Bulbs to NBC, but they hardly made a mark. NBC was forced to scrap the show after terrible ratings, but suddenly they feel compelled to bring it back and are giving it a leg up trying to gather support.

The ONLY explaination?

On March 5, 2007 Media Life Magazine reported that Friday Night Lights is one of the most popular shows among "affluent viewers." This was determined using a report from Magna Global who in turn used analysis done by Nielsen Media Research. Affluence in the study was determined by yearly income.

Even that's a stretch. The show tanks in the ratings so much even a few rich people buying an advertised product here and there wouldn't make a difference. But they obviously want to try and get the ratings up.

Well good for that show, I guess, but what about The 4400? Yes, I'm being greedy here. Do we only have poor College kids like me watching? Lol. We need a study showing that Bill Gates watches our show or something like that.

I just thought it was interesting and got me wondering how USA Execs may differ from NBC Execs, and maybe we should expand and go out towards the parent company to see any possible responses from them. Maybe give the NBC HQ a call, something like that.

I should go before I'm late to class! Just wanted to throw this up, something to think about.

Quofi: it disappoints me too sad.gif However, technically Friday Night Lights was never officially cancelled so it already had hope.

What aggravates me to no end is the fact that USA Network is flat-out ignoring us! No comment, no official statement, nothing! How rude & disrespectful to its viewers! mad.gif

It really bugs me that no official reason was given as to the cancellation. They want to make room for other shows- lame excuse! If they want to do that, then they should take out those Law and Order shows they always have some of them are very old episodes and all they do is repeat them anyways.

Hi Bubba here, I wouldn't mind seeing less Law and Order and I like Law and Order. mellow.gif

And less "Walker, Texas Ranger" I love Chuck as a fighter in the ring (years ago) but he can't act and his co-stars can't act either. The story line is aways the same. Chase the bad guy, let him get away then find him again and kick his butt.

I don't even like that show friday night lights. I think the 4400 is better.

I knows what you mean Bubba, I am a big fan of SVU but I have seen them all, too many times, and it is all becasue of USA and their re-runs and marathons! If the 4400 would have got that attention we would have been able to gain a larger fan base! It simply doesn't make sense to play the same episodes two or three time a week, like they do with SVU, maybe criminal intent too but I don't really watch that one!

Official I think is the operative word of the previous person, and the official reason given was to make room for new shows. That's an official reason, even if it is lame, it is incorrect to say no official reason was given.

Ratings played a role, and most intelligent people assume that that is the biggest reason, but OFFICIALLY it isn't the reason.

I know, but people are not really asking for the official reason. They are asking for the network to spell it out, so a 2 year-old can understand it. When the network says it is "letting go" of a TV show to make room for new shows, the official reason is ratings. They are simply not going to say it that way. They are not "letting go" of Monk or Psych, are they? Do they not occupy the same amount of time on the schedule?

As I pointed out recently, the network is looking for a new show. They are ordering at least a couple of pilots. In other words, they still have a whole in the schedule, and even then they said bringing back The 4400 would be problematic.

Because "room" should not be taken literally. People should be able to understand it means "ratings."

It may not be what they want to hear, exactly the way they want to hear it, but that is the official reason.

Now, if the ratings for The 4400 had been astronomical, then there would be questions, lawsuits, riots on the streets. But when was the last time a show with astronomical ratings was cancelled by a network or studio?

The only thing worth giving to Alex is an intelligent argument, because there is no such think as a troll who can't take it. Just be intelligent when speaking to him and you'll force him to act in a more civilized manner. Just a suggestion.

Check the temperature in hell. If it gets under 32°F, let me know. That will happen around the time when networks stop caring about ratings and revenue, and start caring about fan campaigns.

I think the key issue about affluent viewers is two-fold. First, it can attract more advertisers who want to get in front of the viewers. Second, it can attract more expensive advertising.

So our mission is simple... we just need more rich people to watch The 4400. We should start slipping DVDs of The 4400 into people's luxury cars. Hee, hee... this is for my own amusement... I'm just kidding.

---

Really I am annoyed too that no solid reason was given. "To make room for other shows..." just isn't a reason. There has to be a reason that The 4400 is making room for other shows while reruns of Law and Order saturate living rooms across America.

I think Law and Order is an okay show, but I've seen it so many times that the sound of that electronic/metallic plink makes me leave the room cringing. I can't even tell SVU from CI from RSS or whatever the next iteration is. (Note: I did make up the RSS... there is no such show.) Don't even get me started on Walker, Texas Ranger.

Maybe it's just cheaper to air reruns and pre-runs (as is the case with CI) or maybe The 4400 fans aren't affluent enough or maybe the ratings dropped, or maybe someone got their nose out of joint about who was using the executive washroom, but we could speculate on this forever. The fact is that The 4400 was one of USA Networks best shows with a dedicated fan base; and they couldn't even give it a proper ending or give the fans a proper reason to be so unceremoniously kicked to the curb. --z

Too little, too late. That ship has already sailed. Any other clichés come to mind?
