The WWE Heavyweight Championship
The WWE Heavyweight Title has been around for 45 years since 1963 (and I will post more about the 45 year history later on sometime this year)
The WWE Heavyweight Title has become the symbol of Wrestlemania for over 20 years ever since 1986 and it has been defended 23 times
However, it was NEVER defended @ the very 1st Wrestlemania
and now, here's the history of the WWE Heavyweight Title @ Wrestlemania
It was 1st defended @ Wrestlemania 2 in Los Angeles when Hulk Hogan who was still the WWE Heavyweight Champion def. King Kong Bundy inside the Steel Cage where the only way that you can win is by escaping the cage and then the following year @ Wrestlemania III in front of over 93,000 fans, the largest crowd in WWE history, Hogan would soon def. the late great Andre the Giant after Hogan slammed Andre and used the trademark legdrop to def. this legendary giant to not only retain his title, but also ended Andre's Undefeated Winning Streak in the history of Professional Wrestling of over 15 years.
and @ Wrestlemania IV is where the title changes began:
@ Wrestlemania IV just 1 year after losing the I-C Heavyweight Title against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, The Macho Man Randy Savage w/the late Miss Elizabeth by his side would soon become the WWE Heavyweight Champion for the very 1st time @ the age of 35.
The following year @ Wrestlemania V, Hogan would soon regain the belt ending Macho Man's reign of 1 year.
The following year @ Wrestlemania VI in the 1st ever Title vs. Title Match, The Ultimate Warrior def. Hogan to not only end Hogan's Reign as the WWE Heavyweight Champion, but he would also retain the WWE I-C Heavyweight Championship as well.
He would soon vacate the I-C Title and it was also the 1st time that the I-C Title was defended in a Main Event @ Wrestlemania as well.
The following year @ Wrestlemania VII just one 1 year after losing the title to The Ultimate Warrior, Hogan would soon regain the Championship, this time against Sgt. Slaughter.
The following year @ Wrestlemania VIII, 3 years after losing the WWE Heavyweight Championship to Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage would soon, win back the WWE Heavyweight Belt, this time against the Nature Boy Ric Flair.
The following year @ Wrestlemania IX in Las Vegas, Yokozuna would win the gold, this time against Bret "The Hitman" Hart, however on that very same night, Hogan would soon recapture the WWE Heavyweight Championship against Yokozuna, giving him the shortest title reign in WWE History, and it was also the 1st time that the WWE Heavyweight Title changed hands twice in one night.
The following year @ Wrestlemania X, Bret Hart would soon recapture the WWE Heavyweight Championship against the late Yokozuna @ the World's Most Famous Arena Madison Square Garden, just 1 year after losing the title to him.
On that very same night prior to that, Bret Hart faced off against his real life brother Owen while Yokozuna defended the title against Lex Luger.
The following year @ Wrestlemania XI, Kevin Nash who wrestled as Deisel during the time he was in the WWE would def. Shawn Michaels to retain the Heavyweight Championship.
The following year @ Wrestlemania XII, HBK would def. Bret Hart to win his 1st WWE Heavyweight Championship, this time in a 60-Minute Ironman Match, this time under Sudden Death Rules @ the young age of 30 years old.
The following year @ Wrestlemania 13, The Undertaker would soon recapture the WWE Heavyweight Title (the same title he once took from Hulk Hogan) for the 2nd time within' over 5 years when he def. Sid Vicious.
Wrestlemania XIV, XV and X-Seven was all one man:
Stone Cold Steve Austin
@ Wrestlemania XIV, the Texas Rattlesnake would def. HBK to win his 1st WWE Heavyweight Championship @ the age of 33 and he would later def. The Rock Twice @ Wrestlemania XV and again 2 years later @ Wrestlemania X-Seven.
However, Wrestlemania 2000 & X8 was all about Triple H
The self proclaimed King of Kings would retain the WWE Heavyweight Title against The Rock, Mick Foley and The Big Show @ Wrestlemania 2000 and 2 years later, he would def. Chris Jericho to become the Undisputed WWE Heavyweight Champion for a 5th time.
@ Wrestlemania XIX in front of 54,097 fans @ Safeco Field in Seattle, WA , it was considered THE greatest Heavyweight Title Match in the history of Wrestlemania
Brock Lesnar (the Youngest WWE Heavyweight Title @ Summerslam @ the age of 25) would def. Kurt Angle to recapture the WWE Heavyweight Championship for a 2nd time.
The following year @ Wrestlemania XX in fornt of a LIVE audience @ the World's Most Famous Arena Madison Square Garden in New York City, the late Eddie Guerrero who def. Brock Lesnar @ No Way Out, would soon def. Kurt Angle to retain the WWE Heavyweight Championship.
and the last 3 Wrestlemanias was all about one person:
John Cena
@ Wrestlemania 21, The Doctor of Thugonomics would def. JBL to capture the WWE Heavyweight Championship for the very 1st time @ the young age of 27 (just weeks before his 28th birthday), and on June 6, 2005 John Cena got drafted to RAW taking the WWE Heavyweight Championship w/him and the last 2 years, he would def. the 2 founding fathers of DX:
Triple H @ Wrestlemania 22 in Chicago and HBK @ Wrestlemania 23 in Detroit @ Ford Field in front of over 80,000 fans.
The WWE Heavyweight Title has changed hands 16 times.
and that's your look @ the symbol of Wrestlemania
