We are dog fanciers and currently have 2 Papillions. I would like to get a medium size dog that is family friendly, good with other dogs, but that can also be a watch dog. Does such an animal exist?

Take a look at the Tibetan Mastiff. I fell in love with this breed while at the show. It is a big dog, but likes other dogs, is hypo-allergenic, beautiful, doesn't shed, but blows coat once a year and is a great guard dog. I have several breeds, so one of my questions of the breeders was how well they get along with other dogs, and they assured me they are great with other breeds. They are a large dog, but are an ancient breed, not yet ruined, so they have a life span of 14 plus years. I have alpacas, so would like to have a guard dog, but I can see that I will probably have this big lover in the house when I get one. The breeder I talked to has a two-year waiting list, so I'm getting on the list! The pups go for about $2,000 right now which is really not expensive for a good pup! Good luck!!

You might want to consider a Boxer. They're fearless protectors, but wonderful family dogs, especially with kids. Beautiful & intelligent, medium size, with a somewhat forbidding appearance. Check it out.
