Hi Bhob, long time no post
NBC owns USA so ultimately they can snap the purse closed on the network. From what I've read online USA made the decision to cancel the series but I don't know if they were coerced due to tight budgets or simply felt that the series had come to a logical stopping point. Nothing logical about leaving an audience on the edge of a cliff. A low cliff but a cliff nevertheless. I'm also not sure what hand-if any-Lion's Gate studio had in the cancellation.
I do think loyal fans got the shaft from NBC et al. A proper finale was certainly owed after years of ten month hiatuses and totally inadequate promotion. The ratings were still respectable and the series was a true template for a score of shows created and aired within the last six years. It deserved respect for helping put USA on the cable television map. Am I disgusted? You bet. Do I watch NBC as a rule? No, I don't. They haven't offered anything, with the exception of Journeyman, that I've been even remotely interested in this fall. I liked Journeyman but the comparisons to DZ were inevitable. The WGA strike has had an impact but you can't blame that entirely for the wealth of lousy programming launched since September. Quality programming is rarely given more than a passing glance while all the promotional dollars are sunk into flash in the pan series that just aren't worth an hour of most people's time. I'm not a mindless zombie and I refused to be treated as such. DZ was a thinking person's show and it's been tossed aside like yesterday's paper. Long live mediocrity. Hey, Ruralstar! It has been awhile...
Paragraph #1 - agreed
Paragraph #2 - unbelievable! If I were as knowledgeable, and could have stated it as poetically, I would have said exactly the same thing. This is why I leave the exceptional writing to you. I knew people, myself included, were upset when the Dead Zone was cancelled. The drawn out seasons (never minded them when episodes were back to back which rarely occurred...but nonetheless did for a shortwhile), short seasons (few episodes - bothered me), choppy or divided seasons (definitely bothered me), and/or minimal to no or "inadequate" promotion (this killed me). But, like a hardcore DZ fan - I never gave up and continued to enthusiastically tune in inspite of these frustrations. I was just one individual out of a tremendously large group of worldwide individuals that devoted many years, time, thought, and dollars to the Dead Zone series and never gave up. It is a shame that the series ended in the manner that it did. Remember how fun it was to catch a commercial here and there with AMH promoting the show alongside other actors who were doing precisely the same thing? He was so great! Used to literally crack me up and bring a smile to my face. I do wish AMH, the actors, writers, as well as cast and crew all the happiness in the world, particularly in their future endeavors. I wish DZ fans worldwide the same.
