Monk is more than shtick. It's more than a comedy. Episodes generally have a couple of really hilarious scenes, but what really brings me to Monk is the pathos. I love Monk because he's in so much pain. He's Orpheus, half dead without his Eurydice. He's a geek. He has a hard time fitting in. As someone who's socially awkward, I can sympathize with him.
This is exactly why I've always loved Monk. There's a tragedy that always follows him. Before Trudy came into his life tragedy was all he knew. His father left him, his brother wouldn't leave the house, his mother wasn't affectionate, and his OCD tendencies along with his social awkwardness kept him from fitting in. But he survives because his quirks make him extraordinarily brilliant. He wants to be normal, but at the same time he doesn't want to stop being the best at what he does. Then he met Trudy and she made him feel both normal
and brilliant. She was the focus of his world, his reason for living, the happy part of his soul. But then he lost her, and now he is forever broken, worse than he was before. Monk is so much more than a schtick.
The thing is, I agree with those who say that MONK has lost its soul. I was utterly obsessed during seasons 1 and 2. I can honestly say that during those seasons MONK was the greatest show on television. Nothing beats it. But then season 3 came along and they started screwing with the dynamics of the cast and they moved away from subtle comedy, and it just wasn't the same. Then Sharona left, and my love really dwindled (I was a huge fan of the Monk/Sharona dynamic. In fact, that was my main reason for watching). I learned to live with Natalie, but the interaction between her and Monk just wasn't as fun to watch as the Monk/Sharona interaction, so the humor that came from clashing personalities was completely gone, especially since if you take away Monk's quirks, he and Natalie are virtually the same. But that's when the relationship between Monk and Stottlemeyer became more important, and to this day that's still the most riveting relationship. But the show lost sight of the Trudy mystery and Adrian Monk started being put in over the top situations that made him look like an idiot instead of a brilliant man who had a problem, and that's really when MONK lost its soul. I've been watching my season 1 and 2 DVDs, and it kills me how perfect this show used to be. And it really kills me that the show will be remembered for its more recent utterly mediocre seasons instead of the perfection that it used to be. But my love for MONK is kind of like a marriage. I just can't give up on it, no matter how much it disappoints me. I'm in it for better or for worse, till death do us part.
Now with Psych, it used to just be a fun fluffy show that I never thought too deeply about. But lately Psych has been delving into the relationships, namely the Shawn/Gus, Shawn/Henry, and Lassiter/Juliet relationships, rather than just focusing on the comedy, and this has made me invested. I'm not quite at the devotion that I am for MONK, but its certainly getting there.
So, seasons 1 and 2 of Monk vs. Psych, I would always choose Monk. Season 3 and a half and on of Monk vs. Psych, I'll take Psych.
