Despite little to no advertising whatsoever for Zac’s New Year’s Eve show, there was still a lively audience that DID attend... and Zac did his best to be sure everyone had a great time. His first set started around 10 p.m. preceded by about a 45 minute set by Byron Green.
The first set Zac played consisted of a couple cover songs, but mostly he played his own songs, including the title track and most of the tracks from his debut CD, “Get Your Love On”. He started with “Lonely Town” to get the audience into it right from the start. “Any Bridge” followed by “Anything But Love” were next... The Keith Urban hit, “I Told You So” kept the pace of the show, and Zac owned the song!! My very favorite song that I’ve NEVER heard Zac play, “Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing” was next. His voice is absolutely mesmerizing and sultry and the music is just as enticing. I get lost in this song every time I hear it... so hearing it performed live was a dream come true. After playing “Get Your Love On”, he melted the ladies once again with a scintillating “Never Been Loved”. Of all the songs on his debut CD, that one is my favorite. “Memphis Women and Chicken” kicked the show back into high gear. Keeping it going at that high-octane pace, Zac broke into an amazing performance of Stevie Wonder’s “Supersticious”. He slowed it down a little after that number to give everyone, including himself, a little break by playing the song made popular by Edwin McCain, “I’ll Be (the greatest fan of your life)”. To get the energy pulsing again, “Life Is A Highway” was next on the set list, and “If It Wasn’t For The Whiskey” concluded his first set of the evening.
After a short break, Zac and his band were back for a 2nd round... this time consisting entirely of covers to keep the par-tay hoppin’!! Blues Soul is Zac’s monopoly, and he proved it Monday night by starting off with a version of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Pride and Joy” that would have made the blues master himself proud. Zac’s fun side shone through on “Brick House”, and the audience loved it and crowded the dance floor. “All Right Now” had the unfortunate fate to follow such a hit, but it worked... as did “Mustang Sally” that came after it. Zac does an amazing amazing job with Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey”, and at this show, he gave an even more powerful performance of it than usual. He puts all his grit, feeling, and emotion into the climax of the song and you can’t help but feel it with him. He even let his funky side show with “Play That Funky Music”... cuz even though he IS a “white boyyyyy”... you’d never know it by simply listening. He’s got soul... and blues runs through his veins. That latter fact was proven on the very next song, “I Got A Woman (‘way cross town)” recorded by the likes of Ray Charles, The Beatles, Van Morrison and even Elvis himself. A couple blasts from the past followed, which included “With or Without You” by U2 and “Brand New Day” by Sting... the next song was one I wasn’t familiar with and never did get a title for it, but it was just as enjoyable as all the rest. His last song was Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House” which many people would be afraid to attempt, but Zac pulled it off with flying colors.
The only thing flying better was the time... and it was over... =( We all enjoyed the show immensely and found ourselves already eager in anticipation for Zac’s next performance. He really has a chemistry on stage that is unequalled in most of today’s superstars. His future seems limited only by what amount of work he’s willing to put into his music and keeping true to the style that is all his own. He doesn’t have to try to ‘find himself’ or his ‘identity’ musically. He has that already... a little fine-tuning and a little help by the right people supporting him and we will be tuning in for years to come! With a style that is recognizable simply upon hearing him, he will stand out from the crowd of other talents like himself, also striving to achieve their dreams. If you haven’t seen Zac perform yet, you are sorely missing out on an experience you won’t soon forget. The next time you get the chance to attend one of his shows, do not hesitate. You won’t regret it.
