Anthony Michael Hall by Philippe Bosse/USA Network; Billy Campbell by Billy Zenuk/USA NetworkUPDATE: I just got my hands on an exclusive statement from Jeff Wachtel, USA Exec VP Original Programming, regarding the demise of Dead Zone and The 4400: "We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever. But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable."

My original story appears below.

Next time USA Network gives you a lump of coal for Christmas, be thankful — very thankful — because this year, my moles tell me, what you're getting is the cancellation of both Dead Zone and The 4400.

Yep, per multiple sources, the much-discussed Armageddon came early to Dead Zone — so early, in fact, that the show's last episode aired... gee, back in September. What turned out to be the 4400's series finale aired the same night.

In a statement posted on the official 4400 message boards, series creator Scott Peters said, "We've had a great time bringing you this story and submersing you in the lives of all these incredible characters. Let me raise my metaphorical glass to you all and thank you for being so loyal and so dedicated. I wish we could go on forever, but the party has come to an end."

Already, petitions were circulating to get The 4400 renewed, but is the effort too little, too late? Can anything bring The Dead Zone back to life? Or should the shows be allowed to rest in peace? Discuss, debate and, if you have to weep, do it quietly, huh?

Hi Bubba here, thanks for posting this. It's a sad day for both shows. Yesterday, The 4400 was cancelled and today was backed up with The Dead Zone. I wonder what is next on the chopping block for USA, Monk (No new contract yet) and Nashville Star (Future is still in the air, may move to NBC) ?

I'm okay with DZ's cancellation. I'm actually relieved tbh. The show has been weak for the past few seasons. I've never watched 4400. Wish they'd hurry up and announce if Monk is being picked up or not.

Eep! They cut them off without even giving them the chance to create and air a proper finale? That's harsh. sad.gif

Perhaps in a couple of years' time, they can reunite to give fans a sendoff in the form of made-for-TV movies, perhaps even a theatrical release if they get enough backing.

Other than that, it's not really that surprising they've breathed their last; the ratings seemed to have been collapsing for both over the last year or so. Although given USA's fairly strong track record lately, we might get something just as good as they down the line.

WHich in regards to this show means I have to ask, how long after Monk goes off the air, when the time does come, will this message board remain functional?

I have a hard time believing they'd drop Monk EVER.
Monk is their baby, their special... network child, if you will. Losing Monk will drive lots of people nuts.

Didn't they even state how absolutely proud they are of Monk recently?

smile.gif Don't think negatively. I have a lot of faith in the USA Network!

I just found out yesterday about these two shows. I hope the best to fans of these two shows, but there were alot of hints that USA would do this. First and foremost, the ratings were not well with these shows this year. Cable is like the networks when it comes to keeping a show or not. The writers strike didn't help either. I read an article where networks will flex its muscle and outright cancel shows they feel is costing them too much money and blame the writers strike they are no new scripts on the horizon for these programs. It's ashame. I hope Monk doesn't fall victim to underhanded approach. I guess we will have to wait and see. I am looking forward to end of Season six starting January 11th and going to NBC on March 2. Maybe we will get more fans when it goes to NBC. One can hope and pray that Monk doesn't suffer the same fate as these two shows.
