gang,
I love Psych, wish I could be as care-free as he is. But the last XMAS special was disappointing. I was watching it with my son. I have regarded Psych as a family show. But during the show some foul language is being thrown out by Psych.
I am frustrated now because Psych looks like it doesn't want to target families now, just adult viewing. Don't understand why the writers of Psych are wanting to go in that direction.
Am I alone in this viewpoint?

agreed! It usually doesn't bother me, but this ep seemed to...why do writer "add" it, just for the heck of it. it wasnt needed, and added nothing to the dialog.

Right, I agree that it wasn't needed, but I don't think it was much more inappropriate than usual, besides teh language.
Bubba_Bridges
Hi Bubba here, I agree with you guys. Not the right time to use that language.
bigkitty_4
I didn't mind the language but I was surprise that this episode was rated TV PG not TV PG, L for language. The rating system is to guide families like yours samyo, so little ones don't hear the kind of language used in that episode. Believe me, I have heard worst language than that on television, but the episode should have been rated TV PG, L.
Pak67
Well, believe it or not, I have not seen it yet. sad.gif I DRV'd it and will watch it today, finally!!! I have 2 kids and was too busy to watch it, even though I really was dying inside. Anyway, I guess it would matter how old the first poster's son is and how bad the language was. Psych has been written about as a show that the whole family can watch together, but I think I would picture a family of young teens, not children. I don't let my kids watch it. They are 10 1/2 and 6. Too young. Some of the scenes they could see without any problem but I think that overall, the show is for adults and teens and kids won't understand the things they talk about. I personally, am not a fan of too much swearing in a show or movie, so that is one of the things that I noticed right away about Psych. Good fun without too much of anything. I think it really matters as to how old your child is, I don't think any show on the USA channel is kid friendly, but I may be wrong.

I wasn't bothered by the language. They've used it like that before, but maybe not in that kind of abundance...? I don't know. I wasn't bothered, but I'm also an 18 year old college student who doesn't have children. So I'm in different shoes than some of the members.
monkrocks12
I remember being a little shocked when I heard the language in this episode but it soon passed from my mind and now I don't remember what was said. I am the only person in my house who watches the show and I would be careful about encouraging my neices and nephews to watch it unless they were 16 years old. Thank goodness it is less graphic than the law and order shows, but I think it would be disturbing to young kids since it is about murder and sloving it.

Right, I really didn't notice it too much until it was brought up.

To be honest i didnt even notice any bad langue. I dont know if i have just gotten used to it as an adult, or if the jokes were just so good and funny i didnt even notice. One the great aspects of this show is how comfortable it is, you get the sense that even the cast is having a blast. Maybe in this age the laid back atompshere tends to yeild to the occassional strong word. Ive never thought of the show as a family show, it always seemed to me as more of guys night out type of show. The interaction between shawn and guss remainds me of me and my friends when were going out just goofin around and having fun, but they also happen to be solving cases in the funniest, and slickist ways. Im also not a family guy, im a law student in my 20's

A wee bit, but it wasn't bad. My kids love this show, so I'm hoping it stays G rated! This show doesn't need bad language, boobs, or anything slimmy usually used to try to get ratings. This show is fab without all that crap.

Been a fan of the show, not since the beginning, but probably a couple months after it debuted, just joined the fan forum today.

I watched it again on the site here, but I really didn't notice it. Maybe I'm just used to way stronger language used or maybe I missed it, (bad for a psych fan, shouldn't I be more observant? wink.gif ) What bad words? The only thing I caught that could be deemed "strong language" was the "son of a bitch," but that to me, is just a word that's been used as a "swear" for so long, many forget it simply refers to a female dog. I buy dog food that still refers female dogs as bitches so it's really just misuse. It's a mean thing to say, saying someone is the son of a dog, but it's not exactly the FX channel material.

Though as a couple others have stated, I don't really consider it a "family show," as it does deal with crime and people being hurt or killed. Teens and older, but younger than teens, depends on how mature you feel your kids are. My little sister had nightmares of being blown up, I don't know what she watched but I'm careful about what I watch around her, but my mom, she's not as cautious as I think she should be.

Bastard is another that may be construed as a "bad word," but again, merely someone born to unwed parent/s, technically. Same with "ass." Somewhere along the way it went from referring to an animal, to a body part. Weird.

I'm a word geek so don't mind me. Linguistics was a very fascinating class I took in college.

Right, plus I'm pretty sure that all of those words have been used at least one other time in Psych.

Okay, I just watched the xmas episode for the first time today. I know, I just didn't have the time, but thank goodness for dvr. Anyway, I loved it, I want to watch it again, to see if I missed anything but I thought it was fine. I remember at one point Shawn saying we'll get that son of a b*tch. But I thought it was funny. There were a few other times he said something like that but I thought it was okay. It wasn't excessive at all in my opinion. I never thought anything was vulgar or uncalled for. As far as kids watching, I agree with someone else here, 16ish is okay or older for this show. It's not bad at all but with the plots involving murder, little ones don't need to deal with themes like that yet.

I never thought of Psych as a family show, but I do think it has a more light-hearted approach than other shows in the same timeslot. I feel like Monk is a family show but, most of the programming I associate USA with, such as Law & Order SVU/CI, Burn Notice and House, are definitely adult programming. Although USA is probably the channel that my family watches most frequently together as a family, I am the youngest (26), which still makes it adult programming. Based on ads alone I always kinda felt like they are targeting my age group.

I can see how psych is fun for all ages, in fact when I tell people my age I love the show some sheepishly admit they watch it too, but don't like to tell people. I assure them I know plenty of adults that watch the show, but interestingly I never thought about if kids were watching it. If you go to this link, they never mention an age group under 18 (clicking on it enlarges the print).

As for the holiday episode, I haven't seen it yet. I read somewhere that with the success of the show and a greenlight for future episodes, the creators wanted to develop the characters more. Develop a love interest for Sean, introduce his mother, etc. Maybe the language change had to do with some kind of character development (maybe?), or maybe they checked their stats and decided to fine tune their target audience, probably something like 18-40.

Can't wait for the new episodes...it will be a beacon if the writers' strike continues.

I know most of you don't, but I could definetly see Psych as a family show, its not that bad. Just maybe not for really little kids.
sarcasmlove
Yeah I think it all depends on how old the kids are. My mom and I always watch Psych together, but again...I'm 18. So it's completely different for everyone.

I was surprised when I heard Shawn swear during the Christmas Special just because he doesn't swear much in the show. But I figured he let it slip because he had a personal stake in this case which made him overly excited. I'm eighteen and I watch this show with my little brother who just turned fifteen in November. I'd say Psych is a show for people fourteen and up, depending on the maturity of the fourteen-year-old. There is a lot of dead bodies and you've got to expect a little foul language in a show about detectives (though Psych does not do much swearing at all). But I do think this show could be considered a family show. You just have to know what your kids can handle.

Having re-watched the first season on DVD a short while ago I picked up on plenty of swearing. It is on cable tv, your lucky all you get is a little swearing and not something like Nip/Tuck. I also can not believe that in a show about solving murder cases it is the swearing that bothers you.

True, the images are just as bad as the swearing.

I saw the Christmas episode and i liked it. Like alot of people said language was not cool!! I don't like when T.V shows or movies use language when it does not need it!! Instead of saying the D-word why not use dang or crap or something? Wierd but hey i don't write the movies so i guess it won't change..
Ambermay
There is no other way to describe Psych except that it is genious and fun to watch. This show should be around for a long time! biggrin.gif
ShiningStarr42
I was also kind of surprised by the swearing, it did seem a little excessive compared to how the show normally is. I don't really think it's a big deal, since Psych doesn't exactly seem like a kids show to me, but it doesn't add anything to the show. They don't need to make it "dirty" for people to watch it, it's great how it is. smile.gif
FrankieFranklin
I didn't notice the languge but nowadays everything is a little off. On that note I do have to say that this show is one of the best on TV. Great casting, great plots, and all around a great show. USA has really made their mark with some great shows. If it makes you feel any better I heard some really rude stuff on 1 vs 100 tonight and thats a family type gameshow, with the programming now just educate your kids about TV as early as possible.
Sam132289
I don't remember the swearing that much, only maybe like 2 or 3 times? I remember little Gus said, "This sucks" and Shawn said called someone a S.O.B., but I don't really remember too much more.

The episode didn't bug me, it was still awesome. I loved it, I always love it. lol
