On November 1st, 2007, the second anniversary of his passing:
I am remembering Michael Piller today, and reviewing his incredible list of professional achievements. He produced more than 500 hours of Star Trek, one of the finest television programs ever created--a series with real meaning and great lessons to teach us all, if we will learn.
He birthed the superb program, The Dead Zone, and through the work of his son Shawn Piller and his dear friend Lloyd Segan, it continues to be a thought-provoking and deeply meaningful study of how small changes in our deeds can result in tremendous changes in the probabilities we experience.
It is more than science fiction--Stephen King's The Dead Zone is a program that attempts to teach responsibility and humility. It's not just about Anthony Michael Hall's "Johnny Smith" character--it's about the extraordinary power of action, insight, personal growth...and having the courage to change.
Michael Piller was known throughout the industry as one who would mentor and launch careers of new writers...including that of Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore. Rather than being competitive with, or disengaged from, the efforts of other writers, he would jump right in and help them grow their talent! The industry, and the WORLD, is richer for his unselfishness.
Yet as I have come to know those who knew and loved him well, I would have to say that Michael's most impressive and lasting achievement is how well and thoroughly he loved people. And I am moved by how deeply and richly he was loved by those who knew him well.
Do not believe the stories of how Hollywood is filled with obnoxious, short-sighted utilitarian posers. Los Angeles, the City of Angels, is considered The Creative Capitol of the World for good reason. IT IS JUST THAT.
Creative people tend to very wise and kind, and giving and caring. These words describe Michael Piller perfectly.
Hollywood is full, very full, of heart and soul. Many of our finest have noble goals and very high ideals that we hope to spread into the world, into the mass consciousness, in order to make the world a better place...not only for ourselves but for successive generations to come.
And as Native American Oren Lyons (Onondaga Tribe Faithkeeper) has admonished us, "In our way of life...with every decision we make, we always keep in mind the Seventh Generation to come. It's our job to see that the people coming ahead, the generations still unborn, have a world no worse than ours--and hopefully better." Michael's work was an attempt to make the world a more thoughtful, peaceful and hopeful place.
His work was for "The Next Generation."
Please see beyond the entertainment value of Michael Piller's work, and that of the rest of us who endeavor to teach and enlighten through the realm of science fiction. Please see the tremendous heart that goes into this kind of work, and the grander motivation--to stimulate thought and action, toward making this a better and more peaceful world.
Michael Piller, through his awesome work and his incredible LOVE, made the world a much better place, and we are still richer for having had him here with us for a time.
May Michael and Gene, The Great Bird of the Galaxy, fly together through our memories, our hopes, and all of our fondest and most noble of dreams.
Michael, we remember you, we miss you, we are grateful for you...and we love you.
