Full Version: Tossing Ray Carver's Book!

Last night I saw the episode "Loneliville" and a scene in which Chris Noth is checking out a suspect's bookcase, finds a book by Ray Carver, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, makes a joke and tosses the book away. I understand that Noth is playing a character who hasn't got the time or inclination to read, but did the director and/or producer understand what book he was tossing in that scene and how it encourages people to dismiss books they haven't heard of. Mr. Carver was a great and influential writer at his height in the 1980's and his reputation hasn't diminished since his death. Maybe someone should have checked that out.

Who do I contact, besides a message board, about this? I tried all the L&O websites. Does anyone know?

P.S. I am a devoted fan, especially of "Criminal Intent."

While I am not usually one to reply to a superfluous thread (this really belongs in the Lonelyville thread), I felt moved to comment here.

Number one - Relax. It's just TV.

Number two - When I see books mentioned on my favorite shows I usually go look them up if they seem interesting. Just because Logan tosses it doesn't mean that I would. I discovered Anais Nin after watching Happy Accidents, and I heard of Yukio Mishima from the episode Pravda.

Number three - They work on a tight schedule and I don't think they have time to really check out everything they use in the show. They find something that fits with the tone of the scene and run with it. boom done.

Sorry you think it was an abuse of a fine author, but I'm sure they really didn't think about it either way. If they did that to something I liked, I'd probably complain to my roommates and then forget all about it. i also tend to think of character before the writers, producers, directors, etc.

i beg to differ. I read alot and don't know of him, and i've already asked around and only one person in mycircle of literate friends knew of him.

I agree with Janx.

Best let out your frustrations here. We understand where you're coming from with this kind of outrage. But again, it's just one of those things that gets just thrown in for the setting, not the plot.

(if you want cday, i sould complain about the types of seats/chairs they use)

I don't remember the scene in particular, but I think that, if anything, it is a character thing. That's something that Mike would do. He isn't much for a bunch of lovey doveyness so he would dismiss a book with that kind of title.

I'm going to assume that since this is a show, that is written by writers, they have a respect for the written word.

My reaction would be the same if he tossed the Bible or Koran aside.

Logan, if that's whom you're referring to, is hot-headed, that'e why he is such a good actor! Witt, IMO, seems to be learning from Logan and that's a good thing.

I always liked Logan all the way back to when he starred on the original L&O...and I do think Logan is "hotter" than VDO...I know I will duck from flying objects, but that is just my opinion...

Query: Do you think that Logan is hotter than Goren?

Or CN is hotter than VDO?

(Or both? :-)

We're comparing a character to an actor here. cool.gif

Maybe you're right about taking it too seriously--I get that they're on a tight schedule, it's TV, etc. I get that it was in character for Logan (altho' maybe not for Goren!). I see now that my surprise was over a writer I once knew as a student and admired. On the other hand, the whole thing was so negative about writers anyway--the writer suspect didn't know how to tie a knot when he tried to hang himself! But then L&O goes after every profession, lawyers, shrinks, docs, cops...

I guess I'm still left with the question though. Is it "just TV" and what do we mean when we say that? Is TV disposable? Or does it influence the way people think about stuff--like books--without even being aware of it?

By the way, thanks for responding!
cday
I sure didn't mean for my concern to sound like outrage and I've replied to Janx, as you can see. Thanks for your reply, and tell me what you mean about the chairs!

They're each hot in thier own way...I don't think that I can say which is hotter. I guess if I had to choose one to be absolutely hotter, I'd choose Vince.

Chris has more of a leading man appeal, but he's still a hunk.

Vince has a quality, I don't know what it is, but he looks good. Maybe it's because he's Italian...I don't know.
