Last night I saw the episode "Loneliville" and a scene in which Chris Noth is checking out a suspect's bookcase, finds a book by Ray Carver, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, makes a joke and tosses the book away. I understand that Noth is playing a character who hasn't got the time or inclination to read, but did the director and/or producer understand what book he was tossing in that scene and how it encourages people to dismiss books they haven't heard of. Mr. Carver was a great and influential writer at his height in the 1980's and his reputation hasn't diminished since his death. Maybe someone should have checked that out.
Who do I contact, besides a message board, about this? I tried all the L&O websites. Does anyone know?
P.S. I am a devoted fan, especially of "Criminal Intent."
While I am not usually one to reply to a superfluous thread (this really belongs in the Lonelyville thread), I felt moved to comment here.
Number one - Relax. It's just TV.
Number two - When I see books mentioned on my favorite shows I usually go look them up if they seem interesting. Just because Logan tosses it doesn't mean that I would. I discovered Anais Nin after watching Happy Accidents, and I heard of Yukio Mishima from the episode Pravda.
Number three - They work on a tight schedule and I don't think they have time to really check out everything they use in the show. They find something that fits with the tone of the scene and run with it. boom done.
Sorry you think it was an abuse of a fine author, but I'm sure they really didn't think about it either way. If they did that to something I liked, I'd probably complain to my roommates and then forget all about it. i also tend to think of character before the writers, producers, directors, etc.
