Hi, I'm 17 years old, and I have to go about getting a social security number, on my own. I've never really done anything on my own, so, this is kind of scarey. Here's my problem...

My parents never got a social security card for me as a child, and I'm having, now, to apply for one. I already went into the office and filled out the paperwork, and application, and gave over the required documents, but my question is; what is the possibility of me not getting a Social Security number? I'm a senior in high school, who plans to go to college, and plans to get a job, and this is VERY important to me... Please help me out if you can.

Thanks,
bigkitty_4
You shouldn't have any problem. It will take like four weeks to get one. I am surprise that your parents never got you one. The minute both my children were born, the hospital required me to fill out the paperwork for getting them social security numbers. While moving I had to go down to the social security office because I thought I lost my children's cards. After the cards arrived, I found them in the least possible place. One of the first things my social studies teacher taught us was to memorize our social security numbers, "it the most important number of your life," he told us. He is right. Good luck.

That's exactly how it is now. Children are born and then given the number immediately.

When I was 12, which was a long time ago, is when I applied for my SS card. It was something my school was doing. They wanted everyone to be registered I guess.

And yes memorizing this number is very important. I know my hubby's, both my daughters and mine. I wish they would learn theirs so I could forget them! huh.gif And have some room for something else in my aging years! cool.gif

Good luck in getting yours it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Bubba's right, but it's no big deal. We're all happy to help.
