I think that you're referring to the 'moving to cable slashed the wardrobe budget in half' phenomenon, which is further complicated by the 'taller than average man put on a butt load of weight' and 'wardrobe dosen't kow how to clothe a tall fat man who is constanly losing and gaining weight' syndromes.

I think it is absolutely the case that he (VDO) is wearing bad clothing to show his (Goren's) deterioration. They're filming in NYC, and if you can't get clothing, tailoring, and alterations there to fit anyone from tony sorprano to richard belzer, then what? I think VDO has enough invested in Goren to provide his own clothing if its due to budget slashing.
The man has a mirror, and the tie clips don't have to be repurchased each season, so the position change is on purpose. And the actor hasn't forgotten how to tie his tie properly, 'cause if so he's worse off than exhaustion.
I sure hope this strike ends soon, so we can see how Goren looks when he's done with his 40 days in the desert. Poor VDO, once you've gained and lost weight, it gets harder and harder each time. I pity him, I really do. He needs our support.

jcsavestheday, I hope I didn't respond meanly. I just feel compassion for him and admiration for his acting.
I actually didn't intend to come off like I was making a jab at Vince. I understand that his weight gain was for a role (and he doesn't look too bad heavier). I was expressing my disgust with the fact that it doesn't seem like his suits have been the best quality this season and that they get a smaller budget per ep.
It seems to me as if wardrobe was unsympathetic to Vince's weight gain for his roles. I can understand where they wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on clothes that he would only get to wear for a short time (due to weight loss), but it seems like they stuck him with about three suits and said make do. And they are three cheap-lookig suits at that (at least they look that way on camera).
Although we're aware of his weight gain, I don't think that the character has 'gained weight'. What I mean is that although Vince really is bigger, I don't think that Bobby Goren is any bigger. Therefore he wouldn't go from having high quality tailored suits to cheap looking sloppy suits. (if that makes sense)
I agree with Lozzie on the Visual cues. I'm complaining more about the quality of the clothes than the way their being worn.
