I was shocked... when L&O: Trial byJury was on the air, I immediately was thrilled with their upbeat version of the classic L&O theme song. When TBJ was (prematurely) canceled by NBC, I thought it was gone for good. Well, I am happy to see it reincarnated as the new theme for L&O: CI's new season on USA!
I'm sure that some will disagree with me. But think about this: In the UK, CI has a totally different theme song, one called "I'm Not Driving Anymore" from an album called Furious Angels performed by an artist named Rob Dougan! Evidently the network showing CI reruns there did not like Mike Post's theme, so they substituted their own. Those crazy Brits!

Silly me.... I forgot to set the DVR to record the 1AM version.. Does anyone have any idea when this episode might get repeated again????? Cable shows normally get tons of repeats but maybe because CI is a OTA network transplant, it may not have that many repeats planned especially with all the marathons... Between USA, Bravo on Sunday , and the new weekday strips on the local station, CI is all over the place and I couldn't find tonight's episode again anywhere....
thanks...

i dont like the new theme, i think its too fast paced, but then again i think its cause i just got so used to hearing the old one. i'm one of those who doesnt like change too well. oh well.

I don't understand the reason for changing the theme. I like the TBJ theme but they should have either given CI a new theme of it's own for the show or kept the old one. That is what I thought helped keep each show unique. You could tell which L&O was on by...Oh well, probably just take time getting used to it...or this will be where we can tell if it is pre2007 or post 2007 CI episodes.

Hey guys, for those that didn't see L&O: CI last night, (of course I saw it late b/c I was watching TNA) Law & Order: CI had a new theme, that's right, the theme to CI was taken from Law & Order: Trial By Jury, which starred Bebe Neuwirth best known as Lilith Crane from Cheers and Fred Dalton Thompson as Arthur Branch.
So guys, what did you think about the theme to Trial By Jury being used on Criminal Intent?

Old school is right...there was something about that crescendo in the middle of it that made want to burst out singing the the theme from Fame...(I wanna live forever....)
Think it's going to have to grow on me for a while before I can honestly say I like it.
MikeB54

I think that one reason they recyclerd the theme from TBJ was that it's a tad shorter than the original CI theme, and with only having 3 main characters (Vincent D'Onofrio/Chris Noth, Kathryn Erge/Alicia Witt, & Eric Bogosian, having gotten rid of Courtney B. Vance as ADA Carver) there was too much "padding" in the photos needed to fill the old one. Also, it's a matter of economics... to retool the old theme to shorten it was probably more expensive than just recycling the TBJ theme, which was only uised for a handful of episodes.
But, like the majority of the other replies, I think this theme has more of an edge. If you remember, starting last season (on NBC) the show took on a totally different "character" than L&O and L&O:SVU; the directors have chosen to use very different camera angles amd techniques, and even the music used during certian scenes is more upbeat. So I guess a more intense theme is appropriate.
I had to laugh though... going back to my original comment about "those crazy Brits"... there are actually people there that didn't realize that Jerry Orbach had passed away (may he rest in peace; he was incredible as Lenny Briscoe)... they thought he simply decided to leave the show!

I thought it was rather different (not sure about "trippy" though!). If you blinked you would hafe missed it. But again, the directors hafe taken CI in a whole difrferent direction production-wise. They re-did the photos for SVU this season, too, but no "animation". I'm just happy they FINALLY took a new pic of Dann Florek NOT sitting behind his desk!

I' not sure if I like the new theme. I can't yet condemn it just because it's new. I do like the old theme (old meaning the Criminal Intent theme) and this one has a twangy sound I don't like. But hey, I didn't think I would ever get used to the old Criminal Intent theme verses the original theme. We shall see. If I miss it, I always have reruns.
And besides, it only a minute long and most people fast forward through it anyway.

I'm extremely disappointed in the new opening. The new theme was "borrowed" from "Law & Order Trial By Jury", as well as some of the video elements.
I can understand that USA wanted a new opening, to distinguish the new episodes from the reruns, but I think that the show deserves a new theme, not one recycled from a canceled program!

I am so glad that they changed the theme song...It shows that they are going a different direction on USA. CI was well on it's way to being canceled on NBC following the old L&O formula. I am glad to see they are shaking things up. I am hoping that they let Vincent out of the box. This season is crucial to the survival of the show. If anyone can pull it off it is USA.

OMG... If Bubba_Bridges came down (rightfully so) on ALL CAPS, be prepared for a worse thrashing by using Size 5 Impact (thank goodness I had the good sense to change it for the reply)...
Anyhow, I had already started a thread about the new theme prior to this one. In it, I mentioned that the recycled TBJ theme is shorter than the original CI theme... and I was wrong! They both run 44.5 seconds. But, as I ALSO mentioned in my originaol thread, I think the nw theme goes better with the new production values (which definitely separate CI from the more "sedate" original L&O and SVU). The use of pop music and different camera techniques in CI now (since Season 6) give it a much edgier look in general, and the new (albeit recycled) theme is much more appropriate.

I don't like the new theme all that much --it's like a remix of the old CI theme with the rock guitars gone and a cross of a sort of Stewart Copeland 'The Equalizer' homage (it's very percussion and synthesizer driven) and some dance/techno music. But then I never adored the original L&O theme on which the first CI theme was a variation so it's not that big a deal to me.
'The Equalizer' theme I mean you can listen to at:
http://www.musicwebtown.com/vdovault/26189The show that's got a great theme in the L&O universe is the theme for the French CI adaption Paris Enquêtes Criminelles (PEC as the French call it). I'd post a link but it's been changed...I'll see what I can do to get the right one from my French sources so you can give it a listen.
Oh and the new opening credits camera effects for CI give me a bit of vertigo from all those blurry transitions but I suppose I'll get used to them.
