Full Version: Lose The Shameless Ad Placement...or Lose A Viewer

I watch TV shows to watch TV shows...not to be subjected to a network version of Josie and the Pussycats. What, do you think we're so stupid that we don't notice the shameless Visa commercials that have been permeating the shows of late?

"Wow, this chipped Visa you don't have to swipe is sooooo cool and easy to use!" Yeah, very subtle.

"This is all you didn't steal". Amazing, he happened to be holding it at the perfect angle that all you could see was a Visa logo.

And of course there was nothing pervasive about the giant Visa banner in the background during a dialogue scene.

Heck, even the Vice President is amazed at how simple and amazing the "new" Visa technology is (never mind the fact that my AMEX has had that same technology for like 6 years now).

And don't think we don't notice the shameless Tylenol commercial within the show, either. Amongst others.

I don't watch shows that try to market to me while I watch them. I DVR these things specifically to get away from the ads. It adds zero realism, but does contribute a very cheap sellout sort of feel to the show. A line has to be drawn somewhere. Shows that sell out their viewers by trying to market to them during a show is one of the last walls still standing between us and constant 24 hour a day bombardment. I can't be the only viewer you'll lose if you decide to keep giving the show such a cheap commercialized feel to it.

Wouldn't be hard to pry away, thankfully. I always felt the lowest, most dull part of the series was that seemingly never-ending "Stillson wants to be president and cause the apocalypse" arc, and it seems that a bad idea never dies and is being brought back next year--complete with Johnny's Mini-me having neverending visions of the Capital Building burning to the ground.

Must state the fact that I "HATE" the asiv commercial that show the "idiot" slowing people down by not using his asiv card!!! I do not want or need a credit card!!!!!!!!! I am a cash and carry man---heck I may even use my check book!!!

If it helps keep TDZ in the air I have no problem with it whatsoever, as long as it's not becoming 50 minutes of commercials. *grin*

Such overt advertising makes it a 40 minute commercial, which is what bothers alot of us. The ad placements used to be alot more subtle. Dana saying that she had a "Seabring convertible, parked out front." in Here There be Monsters, Rachel Talaway giving us a full frontal shot of the PT Cruiser in Shaman (she herself notes that one in the commentary), or John asking for a Pepsi in "The Storm". At least these are subtle and part of the story. Even the Tylenol placemetns while obvious weren't overly intrusive. They crossed a line with the VISA promotion and it was noted by people who are not even directly connected to DZ. I don't blame viewers for being disgusted. Advertising is extremely important but it should have a place.

That's true!!!!!! If the product placement is 'spoken' and not actually shown,it just filters into our daily talk, but put in in plain sight and right in our face,well.......... mad.gif ................ laugh.gif

Hi Bubba here, I thought the ad placement brung money to the show or the network. I think I can deal with a few commericals if that keeps the show going.
