Hi, everyone! I couldn't find my old "shipper theory" thread, so I thought this was the best place to post this. My shipper theory is that most E/O shippers are young (under 24), single and female. So, this year I only had two shipper students: one is only 16 and is doing an advanced studies program where students do their last two years of high school and their first two years of college simultaneously, thus she is about four years younger than all of my other students; the other just turned 23. I like to use SVU when we begin doing character analysis because the show has been on so long that we can trace the evolution of the characters over a number of years. Also, SVU is on a gazillion times a week so I know that my students can catch it at least once a week for class discussion.
Here is the funny part that supports my theory. Last spring, the student who just turned 23 was such a shipper that she cried when some of the other students did a super character analysis exercise on why E/O should not be together. Two weeks ago, she turned 23 and she announced in class that she is no longer a shipper. She told me "you were right, I grew out of it."
The not-so-funny part is that the 16-year-old announced today that she is no longer a shipper because her brother-in-law just left her sister and their three children after 14 years of marriage because he says he is in love with a co-worker. One of their kids is only three months old. She said that it made her want Elliot to stay with Kathy.
So, this got me thinking about my shipper theory again. I am wondering how many of you all fit the profile. Also, are there any male E/O shippers on the board? I have yet to find one.
BTW, I am not a "flamer", (my new word of the week), so I don't want a fight. I really just am curious and I would like to know what you all think about my theory.
Additional BTW--I may use your posts in class this week, if that's okay with you all

I am 26, married, I'm an actor (so I've done character analysis before), I was the child of a nasty divorce, and I am completely 100% for EO.
I think that it's possible that the reason for your student's lack of EO has to do with group mentality and it could even stem from your opinion on the matter. Especially if they love you as a teacher, they're gonna want to know your opinion and they're goning to feed off ot it. Even if it's unconscious, it's very normal for a person to sway towards the opinion of somebody they look up to. I know I've done that before. Heck, I remember getting very passoinate about certain things (things that I really didn't give two snaps about) just because I thought it would get me a better grade. And it did. And I got passionate about something, so it's not a terrible thing, but I think that the pole could be a little tainted in this setting.
In reality, yes Kathy and Elliot trying to work things out would be awesome. But there's no excitement (IMO) in that. For me, this relationship has been building and building for years. There are many things that the writers have set up and left open, I'd like them to be answered. There needs to be something explosive. Many people are dissapointed with this season and I think it has everything to do with lack of EO--and the fact that, with El and Kath together the EO relationship is pretty much at a stand still. There's no suprise left for our veiwers to figure out- it's just two people, who are good friends, who happen to work together.
That relationship- on a drama series- has very little conflict situation to it, which pretty much makes it unentertaining. So- my point is- for entertainment reasons, we need the hint of possible EO.
And I personally would love to have one kiss.
