She seems to be the person he talks to about family and home issues. There have been several episodes where Olivia has brought the family back to Elliot. The birthday cake scene. There's also a scene right before El and Kathy split up where El and Liv talk about it in the hallway. It's in like the 6th or 7th season. Liv tells him that Kathy has a point and to be more understanding and to go be with Kathy. As much as we all like to point out that Liv is in love with Elliot, she's also had some great moments where I think she deeply cares about Elliot making his family situation work out. She asks about Maureen's college forms in one episode. She knew about Kathy's doctor appoint and reminded him about it. She cares about this family. It's as if it's her vicarious family. And she's kind of been like a second wife to Elliot.
Really, Olivia is the friend that gives good advice and looks out for the well being of her friend, but that kind of thing trickles down to his family and his relationship with his wife. My husband and I have had a few huge issues come up throughout our relationship/marriage and without a third party to keep us in check or to bring us back to our senses it could have easily ended in divorce. I have no doubts in my mind that without Olivia, Elliot would not have gone back home.
She even reminded him how important family is in "Philadelphia". She saved his wife's life. She was the first person to hold Eli. She's made a big impression on the lives of the Stabler's and I think it's becoming more evident as the years progress.
Ah..okay. I got it. Thanks for clearing that up. Although, I'm pretty sure Kathy would refuse to see things that way. She did, however, come to Olivia and asked her to persuade Elliot to sign the papers or at least talk to her instead of stalling.
It just made me wonder sometimes how Kathy and Olivia don't seem to be better acquainted with each other, especially since part of the latter's duty is to protect the former's husband on the job. Benson and Stabler were partners for at least 6 years before the separation. Wouldn't anyone in her position want to get to know her cop husband's partner a little better?
