The family and I are going to DC/Philly/Hershey/Pitts this summer! The kids have studied parts of the American Revolution, Civil War, George Washington, the Liberty Bell and are looking forward to seeing DC, the White House, the Liberty Bell, Gettysburg, maybe Trenton, NJ where Geo. W. crossed the Delaware, and of course, HERSHEY!!!!!!
We looked at staying at the Hershey hotel and the Hershey lodge -- DAM#, those places are SOOOO expensive! So, still not sure where we'll be staying in Hershey area.
We're planning on being in DC for the 4th of July -- kids are excited about the fireworks, etc. Also going to take in a couple of Astro's games -- Astros at Pittsburg Pirates and Astros at Washington Nationals in the NEW NATS BALLPARK!!! Should be lots of fun. Also looking at water parks, theme parks, historical sites and planning a visit with some old friends.
Any ideas, hints, suggestions are welcome, as I know there are folks here from Pennsylvania who can give us some ideas.
Happy Sunday, ya'll!
OK, Flashymom - not sure how close you'll be to any of these places but:
The Philadelphia Zoo - excellent Zoo, the animals are beautiful and well cared for. It has a treehouse for younger kids (not really a tree house but an activity center), plenty of shade and lots to do.
Gettysburg - while I haven't been there YET, we're trying to plan a weekend there. The battlefield actually has night 'ghost tours' if that would be of any interest. There is also the Eisenhower 'mansion' that is open for touring and said to be haunted by Mame Eisenhower.
Camden, NJ has an aquarium that is awesome. Not too big but you can pet baby sharks and stingrays. The last time I was there they were remodelling and enlarging. You can park in Philly and take a ferry across the river - not too far from the Phila Zoo exit if I recall right.
Knoebels is in Elysburg, PA - it's an amusement park that is free of charge to walk around, you only pay to ride the rides and is HUGE. It's got one of the top rated wooden roller coasters in the world. My family and I go there at least once a year, if time allows.
Washington, DC is simply an amazing place. The National Zoo, the Smithsonian - the National History Museum, the National Archives, The Spy Museum (this is new and a bit out of the way, but if you can get to it, it's well worth the effort), the National Cathedral - there is so much to do in DC, but be prepared to walk. Once you get parked you need to plan on leaving your car since parking is so hard to find and traffic is usually heavy. We go to Virginia at least once a year to visit family and I love going into DC. Just walking by the White House and Executive Offices makes you proud to be American.
If you'd like I can try to get my hands on some brochures for Hershey, Philly, Knoebels and Gettysburg and mail them along to you. Let me know.
