Oh dear god, today was one of the longest days of my life.

My dog was sick today, shes only a puppy and she kept getting progressively worse so we took her to the emergency room for animals, i had spent all day with her, she was throwing up and her stools were bloody. Stayed at the Emergency room for 3 hours, the Vet decided that she needed to stay over night, and as soon as she said that, my mom and i started crying. [Nala[our puppy] is our little baby].

Got home at like 8, then headed out to do laundry and grocery shopping, then waited for the vet to call. Apparently Nala is on an IV now. sad.gif

I get to see her tomorrow morning though...in between Mid Terms...i was suppose to be studying today. >_<

Thanks, CI. She is feeling pretty good today. Well enough to go off with her friends for a while. She hasn't needed the Vicodin today, so that's good. We stopped in at my office on the way home from the doctor's yesterday. My supervisor wanted me to fill out a leave of absence request--and she wants a note from the doctor that my daughter needed me home with her this week. Oh brother! My daughter stayed out in the truck at first, but one of my co-workers went out to see her and talked her into coming in. And then EVERYONE made a fuss over her! And told her to stay off the hoods of cars!

Our family is coloring and decorating Easter eggs tonight. 3 teenagers and my husband and I. Well with one egg left my 14 year old tell me she is going to make a me a special one.
She sure did. It says "I Love VD'.

Her siblings are still laughing. I tried to explain that is why we use VDO.

Another hour long trip for my daughter's follow-up appointment with the neurosurgeon. He had the results of the CT scan they did on Wednesday. This news was a bit sobering and scary for my daughter. She has a bruise on the front of her brain (the skull fracture is on the back of the skull). Its small, but he said that the fact that we can see the bruise means there is nerve damage we can't see. He said that there is likely minor but permanent brain damage. She might have as much as a 5 point drop in her IQ in certain areas, maybe less in others. Of course, we've never had her IQ measured, so who knows? He said she may have some memory loss and difficulty retaining information, but it should improve as the concussion heals. He said that alcohol is a big NO-NO--forever. It can exacerbate any damage. No contact sports--ever. Tennis and running are OK. We asked about horse riding since she loves horses. He said that horse riding is a risk in and of itself. She can ride if she wants, but MUST ALWAYS wear a helmet. He said that she has "had her bell rung once". He said that professional football players that recieve this type of injury a second time can never play again. Oh yes, there is a small (5%) chance this could result in siezures up to 2 years from now. That really scared her because her oldest brother has siezures. And he told her several horror stories of patients he has seen over the years with freak accidents that resulted in permanent brain damage or death (including a professional dressage rider).
So....she will probably be OK, but has to be cautious for the rest of her life. That's not asking too much of a 15 year old, is it? The neurosurgeon was REALLY angry at the boy driving the car. He said that no matter what she was doing, there was no excuse for moving a car with someone on it. My best friend said that's why teenagers shouldn't be allowed to drive--they don't think. tongue.gif

ciaddict - thanks for the update. I am glad she was taught a lesson and hope she learned her lesson but learned it the hard way. So sad the side effects for the rest of her life that one little bump on the head does. I never even realized, of course my daughter probably does but she's not here to explain it to me. I'll have to really talk to her about it. She's the one that is going into the medical field. I know nothing about it. I never knew about the effects of alcohol. I guess she is sober for the rest of her life and seizures. Wow. I just never knew all the possible downsides.

Oh, Wow! That is sobering! Maybe her school would let you and your daughter talk to the driving-age kids about her and her accident? You could start to turn her negative into a positive!

BTW -- have you thought about having the boy's insurance pay part of her doctor bill -- her accident could be partially covered under his insurance; couldn't hurt to check, could only help ya'll pay the bills and make more of an impact on the boy. Maybe you could take him to her next neuro appt and have the doctor talk to him?

That's a great idea about talking to the kids at school. I'll look into it.
As for the insurance, I am assuming (I know, never assume) that my insurance will try to collect from his insurance. I just have a feeling that what they collect won't be my co-pay or deductible, just what the insurance would be responsible for. Other than getting a lawyer (which I don't think I'll do), I don't know how to go about getting his insurance to pay. The police officer who responded called me at the hospital last week and told me the police report would be ready for me to pick up this week. I meant to go pick up a copy today, but didn't get back to town until late. So now I'll have to wait until next Friday.

I don't think it was done out of malicious intent or even with the idea of injuring her. Any money the insurance company gives you would be a help. I don't think I would hire a lawyer, either. That seems rather harsh for something that was a childish impulse that backfired...The kid's guilt is enough for me, but he does need to have it on his insurance to really help him learn his lesson. I would be making my children have to pay the extra expense on the insurance and would demand it be on their record, if only to drive home the seriousness of the situation. (But, that's just me, a lot of parents aren't like that.)

We had a traffic court with a peer jury when I was growing up. I had to sit on it after getting a ticket. We would make the other kids (repeat offenders) do community service hours, write essays, or pay fines, or a combination. The traffic court judges loved it, cuz we knew our peers well enough to give the proper penalties. We had one kid whose parents would have paid his fine and done nothing to punish him, so we gave him the equivalent comm serv hours. Another boy we made write an essay b/c he hated school work so much, and so on. It was an eye-opener for me, and I made sure I didn't get any more traffic tickets while in high school!

I speak from experience. If the car was moving then it will be covered under his auto insurance. If the driver's insurance company gives you crap about paying then then you will need to hire a lawyer.
The kid was probably under his parent's insurance, so they will be the ones paying the consequences not the kid, as far as insurance rates and records. I think it is up to the parents of the kid to punish him as THEY see fit.

Since a police report was filed there is documented proof. The tough part is dealing with the kid's parents. Let the insurance companies handle it.
Once again it was an ACCIDENT. A one second moment in time that you wish you could take back. I hope your daughter is resting and relaxing. Make sure she wears sunglasses outside at all times too and stays out of direct bright indoor light flourescent (sp) lighting that might cause headaches.

My dog once got a hold of an Effexor, and antidepressant, was out for a whole day, Vet said all we could do was watch him and encourage him to try to drink. It was the scarriest day of my life. So glad your pup is ok. I always find pills on the floor, I tell my family to be so careful when taking meds, not to drop them on the floor.

Yeah my room always has benedryl on the floor, i just dont let her in my room, never have--i was always afraid she would eat them. My dad lets my dogs run around the house without watching them so this was the outcome.

Hey someone messaged me with a suggestion, and I figured I would throw it out there and see if anyone was interested. On another board I am on, they do an episode of the week, since there will be no new episodes till June, we could pick a rerun playing on USA maybe on the monday, spend the week Re-Reviewing it, until the new episodes start. Anyone interested? What do yall think.? Tomorrow But Not Forgotten is playing we could start with that one.

The "old gang" used to do that here, mainly when we down in the bottom part of the forum. It's a good idea.

Yeah, we aren't sure what happened. Even the doctor is scratching her head.

I'm thinking she ate something, maybe like Tyenol on someones floor.

I'm glad your pup is feeling better, Valley!

Happy Easter!

I'm glad your puppy is all right. That's freaky

I, however, have a funny story you reminded me.

My mom has this tiny super hyper min-pin named Rudy. One day I was getting ready for school and I dropped a Concerta (for ADHD). I looked and couldn't find it. Turns out the dog found it first. The rest of the morning Rudy just sat on my bed calmly watching me get ready instead of following me around and getting in my way. Don't know if it had to do with the med, but I found it hilarious.

He was fine. He's been through worse (eating an entire Hershey's bar).

My golden Retriever as a puppy ate a cigarette butt while out on a walk. She was sick for days. I now know where the phrase "sick as a dog" came from. We had to feed her boiled chicken and regular cooked rice (not instant) for a week.

Everytime my husband saw the mixture in the fridge he would say can't you add some broccoli and cream of mushroom soup and make me a dinner? No, it was for the dog.

That was 7 years ago and I swear every time she hears a casserole dish clank, she comes running.

I can't imagine how much harder it is with a small dog with a small tummy. I hope the pup is feeling better.

It so sad to see them sick--because you can't tell them everything is going to be okay. Especially when we dropped her off at the hospital, i couldn't say, we'll be back tomorrow.

Our family always gathers at my mother's for breakfast and an Easter Egg Hunt, then everyone goes off to other family things in the afternoon. But my daughter had a really bad headache this morning so we stayed home. sad.gif She slept all morning and felt better when she woke up. So she went off with her friend to her family dinner and egg hunt (they brought me back a piece of Coconut Cream Pie--yummy!). I was going to just putter around at home and catch up on some cleaning. But the neighbors are driving me crazy! I had to come to my mother's for a while for some peace and quiet--and to talk to you guys! Its definately time for me to go back to work. The kids have been out of school all week and the little boy next door (6 or 7 years old) has only one volume on his voice--LOUD. He is loud when he is happy (which is rare) and he is louder when he is crying (which is most of the time). All week, I listened to this kid scream and cry over every little thing ("GIVE ME BACK MY BALL!!!"). Then his mother would scream at him to shut up, which would make him scream louder, and on and on and on. I finally had to just get out of there today. Its so much quieter here.
