I didn't get it, either. I tried clicking on tools, but didn't see anywhere to delete cookies or files. I'll just wait a few days to see if it "takes", or have my daughter help me.

This morning I went out bright and early to take my daughter to school, and discovered my truck had been broken into. They pried open the locks on the camper shell, then pried open the windows between the camper shell and the cab (so nice that they didn't break anything!). Then they took my radio. Of course--the one time I didn't take the faceplate off! I called the police and they took a report, but of course the radio will never be seen again. Well, not by me anyway. Someone will see it again--in their car or truck!
Then, after dropping my daughter at school, I went to have the truck smogged (its so wierd having silence while I drive--and the hole left by the radio looks so sad). And it didn't pass. sad.gif It was too high on the emissions (at 15 mph, but was OK at 25 mph). The smog guy gave me an application for a state program that helps pay for repairs, and the DMV gave me an extension (of course I waited until the very last day to get it done).

I went to Borders to treat myself to Happy Accidents. I have it on tape, but want the DVD with the extras. They didn't have it in stock and had to order it for me. Delayed gratification--YUCK! Who needs that?

But my mommy just gave me a pint of Haagen-Dazs Caramel Cone ice cream and a spoon for my dinner. My mom rocks!

Aww that is terrible. You're right, you probably won't see any of your stuff again. Hubby and son and I went to dinner tonight and when we went to leave I found a flat tire on my car. So I had to get my brother who actually works at the place where we ate and he came out and changed my tire because I could do it if I wanted to and my hubby is unable to. We are just unlucky tonight but you have had the worst of it, definitely.

Between my suspicions that one of the neighbors has been using my washer and dryer while I'm at work and now my truck being broken into, I'm almost afraid to go home tonight. I'm afraid I'll find someone sleeping in my bed or eating dinner at my table! laugh.gif The police officer who took the report today told me that these apartments where I live used to be really bad. He said that whenever they got a call there (which used to happen a lot), it was always a 2 unit response--minimum! He said he hasn't been there in a long time, but was surprised when he pulled into the carport because it used to be so covered with trash and junked cars that you couldn't even park there. The landlord has cleaned it up and gotten new tenants. But he said that tweakers still go up and down the alley to see if they can break into a vehicle. He did say, however, that this town is the safest town to live between San Francisco and LA. There was a young man murdered a few weeks ago (a couple of blocks from my apartment!), but that was the first murder in this town in almost 4 years. What was disturbing about it, though, was how vicious it was. It was done by gang-bangers and they really sliced the poor guy up. He wasn't even in a gang. My daughter isn't allowed to wander around town after dark anymore. Sad.

Oh! That is so sad and very scary. It's too bad that parents are afraid to let kids out of their sight anymore. My husband and I have commented more than once that you NEVER see kids out playing in their yard, teenyboppers walking around town in groups etc like we did when we were kids. We live in a small town as safe as any and seriously the only time I see kids playing and sqealing and acting like kids is at the beach in the summer.

I used to teach in MD...one year we had a week off because of snow...but now I am in the Poconos and we already have had seven snow days to make up....and it is supposed to snow again today...

Where in MD did you teach? I teach in Baltimore County. I remember being off a couple of years ago because we got 30" of snow. They close schools so fast around here, all we need is a couple of inches.

I just got back from the library. The parking lot was worse than the mall at Christmas. We had to ride around until we could get a parking space. Isn't that great? People still read books. Yay!

Yay... boo hoo hoo to the cynics that said that we would all be reading electronic books in 2010!! Not if I can help it!!! There is nothing like the feel of a proper paper book and the smell of it when it comes right off the press is so sweet. Cloggs & Hullbound:

I'm glad to see that someone else on this board still wants to read print on paper; not in flashing dots of light. I have 3-4 bookcases full and overflowing into boxes of books; and, it's really a chore when I get so overfilled that I have to remove some. I donate any books that they will take to one of the branch libraries. Maybe it has something to do with age, even emails, newspaper articles and other things that attract my interest online, I print out so I can read on paper. (I notice in the office, that the middle aged people print a lot; the younger ones, seldom print and don't want paper print-outs.)

I'll confess to one infraction; when I am driving some distance, I listen to audio-books; as it's not safe or simply to read written pages.

I LOVE books, too! Just finished reading John Grisham's "Playing for Pizza"; if you're a football and/or Italy fan, you'll love this book. It's along the lines of "The Bleachers" and "Skipping Christmas": not a legal thriller. I've just started on his other new book, "The Appeal". Other faves: Tom Clancy, Harry Potter series, Narnia series, Robin Cook, Patricia Cornwell......

My kids are HUGE book fans as well. They each have 2 overflowing bookcases in their rooms, there's one in the guest room, one in our master bedroom, books in the drawers of my bedside dresser......I've got some saved in the attic, donated others to Goodwill, the church, friends.......I love giving books away instead of throwing them away.

I'm 50/50 on whether I print out stuff or just read it on-line. Depends on my mood.....

Aren't books wonderful?

For all the animal-lovers on this board, this is an short article that appeared in the Sacramento Bee on Friday, Feb 22, 2008. (Sorry, I couldn't find it online, so I'm typing it.) For the record, I don't own any pets.

Cat lovers, rejoice! They're good for you
(Minneapolis) Star Tribune

Here, kitty kitty . . .

A study suggests cat owner are less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than people who, well, don't own cats.

And no, dogs don't do the same trick.
The study, by researchers at the University of Minnesota, found that feline-less people were 30 to 40 percent more likely to die of cardiovasular disease than those with cats.

Yet dog owners had the same rate as non-owners. "No protective effect of dogs as domestic pets was observed," said the study, presented Thursday at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans.

Dr. Adnan Qureshi, a stroke expert at the university, said he decided to raise the question because other studies have suggested pets can help reduce stress. He and his team analyzed a group of 4,435 people who had answered questionnaires about per ownership and other risk factors.

But the cat-dog differential came as a surprise. "We don't understand this," he said, but "it's probably not a coincidence."

Asked if he owns a cat, Queshi replied: "No. Maybe I should get one, though."

Yes they are. My son had a hard time learning to read so he didn't like it at all so we gave him the World almanac (do they still publish that?) the Guinness Book of Records, Video game magazines, comic books anything that he liked. I thought it wouldn't be such a chore that way and I didn't want him to end up hating to read because I love it so much. One of his grade school teachers gave us sh*t about it but now my son is an English Major and loves to read. So tongue.gif ~~~~~~~~~ to that teacher. Ironically my son now gives me crap about what I read. LOL Apparently I read books (thrillers, mysteries..) and he reads literature.

ha, ha! Your plan worked, and then he turned the tables on you. Gotta love kids, huh? We used movies to get my son to read. He loved the animated movie of Charlotte's Web, so I told him I'd buy him the DVD (replacing the worn out VCR tape) if he would read and test on the book for school. It worked! Then, The Chronicles of Narnia was advertised -- he and hubby read ALL of C S Lewis Narnia books that year, for school, no less, AND he was in 3rd grade. When he was ready for the Harry Potter books, each book was followed by getting to watch the movie, and so on. The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, The Indian in the Cupboard, Bridge to Terebithia -- he read all for school. Made 100's on 95% of the book tests, too! We're forecast for 'light snow showers' here in the UK tomorrow.

Hubby is allergic to cat dander too, which my little girl isn't happy about because she would love a kitten. And wouldn't you know, cats adore my allergic hubby too, go figure...

I love books. I have to curb my spending habits because i could bankrupt myself on them easily. I love to read, i love to just lose myself in a well written plot, i love the smell, touch and feel of a new book with crisp new pages. My little girl has inherited my love of books, i had hoped that one of my kids would because i believe being able to read opens up the imagination so much. She loves the Guinness Book of Records, any kind of encyclopedia type books, any knowledge type books and she's just discovering the world of Roald Dahl (we're currently reading The BFG, she loved the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory books as well as The Witches and we hope to start Matilda soon too) and she has also discovered Dr Seuss too.

I'm having laptop problems. My battery icon keeps popping up when i'm using the battery charger. We thought it was the charger and replaced it but the same problem is reoccuring so i think its actually the laptop or the battery itself that's causing the problem. My laptop is 15 months old and has all my fics on it, so i'm going to start backing them up before it goes kaput. sad.gif Not a happy bunny about that at all mad.gif

My friend had a "girls night" party last night and she had asked us who are favorite celebrities were. I of course said, VDO. When I got to her apt, she had downloaded pics of all our favorite men and put them in frames and put them on her wall. It was really cute! My pic of VDO is a CI picture with his autoghraph on it! So now I can say I have VDO's autograph! laugh.gif

I think that says it all about my love of reading. I really could use another bookshelf... flashymom, have you heard of BookCrossing.com? It allows you to register books you will never read again, then leave them around in public places for strangers to find. Or you can give them to friends. That's how I've gotten my book collection down to a managable level. Not that it stays that way for long. wink.gif It's like the quote about the only bad things about new books is that they prevent you from reading the old ones.

Speaking of books, I need to get to the library.
ciaddict
Ah, books. LOVE THEM!!! I have piles of books that I haven't read yet, and still I buy more. Hmm...books, VDO, CI--do I seem a bit obsessive?
A few years ago my daughter got the entire Chronicles of Narnia for Christmas. At that time I had to drive about 20 minutes to her bus stop, then after work I picked her up and drove another 20 minutes to get home. She started reading to me while we were driving and we read the entire series. I had read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe years ago, but hadn't read any of the others. Now we live close enough for her to walk to school. I miss those drives!

A while back someone asked for the recipe for Palm Beach Brownies. I can't remember who it was or I would PM her. So here is the recipe, and for all those who aren't interested, skip to the next post! tongue.gif

Palm Beach Brownies (Maida Heatter's Book of Great Chocolate Desserts)

8 ounces (8 squares) unsweetened chocolate
8 ounces (2 sticks) sweet butter
5 eggs (large or extra-large)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 tablespoons dry intsant espresso or other powdered (not granular) instant coffee
3 3/4 cups ganulated sugar
1 2/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
8 ounces (2 generous cups) walnut halves or large pieces

(Personally I don't use the almond extract or coffee--just my personal preference)

Adjust rack one-third up from the bottom of the oven and preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a 9X13X2-inch pan as follows: Invert the pan, cover it with a long piece of aluminum foil, and with your hands press down on the foil around the sides and the corners to shape it like the pan. Remove the foil. Turn the pan right side up, and place the foil in the pan. Very carefully (without tearing it) press the foil into place in the pan. Now butter the foil with soft or melted butter. The easiest way is to place a pieced of butter in the pan, place the pan in the oven while it is warming up, and when the butter is melted use a pastry brush to spread it all over the sides and bottom of the foil. Set the prepared pan aside.
Place the chocolate and the butter in the top of a large double-boiler over hot water on moderate heat, or in a 4- to 6-cup heavy saucepan over very low heat. Stir occasionally until the chocolate and butter are melted. Stir to mix. Remove from the heat and set aside.
In the large bowl of an electric mixer, beat the eggs with the vanilla, almond extract, salt, dry instant coffee, and sugar at high speed for 10 minutes. On low speed add the chocolate mixture and beat only until mixed. Then add the flour and again beat only until mixed. Remove from the mixer and stir in the nuts.
turn iunto the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 35 minutes, reversing the pan front to back as necessary during baking to insure even baking. At the end of 35 minutes the cake will have a thick, crisp crust on the top, but if you insert a toothpick into the middle it will come out wet and covered with chocolate. Nevertheless it is done. Do not bake it anymore.
Remove the cake from the oven and let stand at room temperature until cool. Then cover with a rack or a cookie sheet and invert. Remove the pan and the foil lining. Cover with a cookie sheet and invert again, leaving the cake right side up.
Now the cake must stand for 6 to 8 hours, or preferably overnight, before it is cut into bars. Or refrigerated it for a few hours.
Then, since the top of the cake will be crusty and the middle will be wet, use a serrated bread knife. If the ends of the cake are a little too dark cut them off and then cut the cake into bars. It will probably be necessary to wipe the blade with a damp cloth after each cut.
Cut into 24 huge Brownies, or 32 large ones, or make them smaller if you wish. They will be 1 1/4 inches thick.
Wrap these individually in cellophane or wax paper. Or package them in an airtight container with wax paper between the layers. do not let them dry out.

WHenever I change my avatar, I have to go into Tools on my toolbar - delete my cookies, files, etc. and then after I log out of the forum and log back in, my avatar is the new one. I don't know why but it works every time. smile.gif

Right click on the avi and select VIEW IMAGE. You should get a white page with just the avi on it. Hit your browser's refresh button. Once usually does it, but try it twice if it doesn't change on the first go. Hit the back button to go back to the regular forum page.

What's happening is that your system uses cached information to speed up the loading of pages. So when an avi gets changed, the cached info doesn't always change right away. It changes on it own after a few days because it refreshes the cache every so often.

Yay... boo hoo hoo to the cynics that said that we would all be reading electronic books in 2010!! Not if I can help it!!! There is nothing like the feel of a proper paper book and the smell of it when it comes right off the press is so sweet. I just love them.. they are one of my addictions and I refuse to be "cured" from buying lots of them... even if my small book shelves say I really should.

Cloggs

Electronic book = Amazon.com Kindle. By 2010 it could become much more common, since it is a wonderful technology.

QUOTE (LOCIFan2 @ Mar 1 2008, 04:58 PM) *

The reader above is not flashing dots. It is in fact ink particles suspended in extra super tiny bubbles in the surface of the reader, which has the same light refraction and reflection as ordinary paper. The display is changed by the channeling of a small current adjusting the ink to be either at the top or the bottom of the bubble. Because it is not backlit or has to be refreshed like a conventional screen to the human eye it is just like reading on paper. The technology goes by the name electronic paper or e-ink.

I have 4 6' x 3' bookcases and still don't have enough room for all my books. I love them all and rarely ever get rid of any. I like paper books, but I'm also for a technology that will allow me to grow my collection without it forcing me out of the living room. Not to mention saving all those trees that would make all that paper.

I don't like printing things out personally because A. alot of things lose relevance too quickly to make it worthwhile, and B. I'm terrible with organizing papers... If it's in the computer, I always know where to find it.

My roommate loves his audio books for when he's at work. He's a big reader too, but since he spends 40 hours a week tied to his desk, he can actually keep up on his reading that way. And not go crazy on his co-workers.

ciaddict -- you and your daughter sound like Hubby and The Son -- they LOVE to read together every evening! Great memories are made with good books, aren't they? I love being able to share books with my kids.

Enaka -- If you'll let me know when you're coming aboard, I'll see to it that you get a personal escort to the kitchen and back to your shuttle boat, just to reassure the rest of our crew and compliment that you're totally "above board" during your cooking lessons. Oh, if you're a very good girl, I might be able to arrange to have our good Doc.Bobby Goren stop by the kitchen during one of your visits. biggrin.gif

Now, not to get preachy, but I'm going to take of my guard gear and step up on my soap box for just a minute:

Trees are not "wasted" for books. My husband used to work for Westvaco, now MeadWestvaco. They take tall oil and other pine tree "waste" after the pulp making process is done and use it to manufacture components for inks. Westvaco makes cardboard boxes for Black & Decker, specialty boxes for Budget Gourmet, etc......inks for envelopes, labels, and the envelopes and labels, and other paper products. That company, along with Boise Cascade, TempleInland, and others, GROW THEIR OWN TREES, genetically researched and designed for each specific need, on property owned by or leased to those companies. Trees are not randomly cut down or clear cut from wherever and turned into paper, paper products, etc!

International Paper also had a telephone pole manufacturing plant in that same town and they grow all of their own trees, too. The downside to all this is, those factories STINK -- really, they REEK! The smell is horrible! I never got used to it during the whole 6 1/2 years we lived there. The only place that smelled worse was the fish food plant -- that smell will make you gag!

Ok, I'm not done, but I'll stop now. ::puts away soapbox, dons guard gear, grabs launcher and leaves::

I never said they were wasted. Just that it takes alot of paper to make all those books. I totally approve of specially grown trees and using all the parts and byproducts, but you're right about the smell of the paper mills... I lived in Savannah, GA one summer and if the wind blew the right way, WHEW!!!

My feeling is that as we use less paper, we get more real old growth areas going again. We are going to need some kind of paper products for many years to come, because I can't see a synthetic paper towel happening in the next decade... And no wants to clean up ucky messes with their dishtowels. I wasn't saying they were randomly clearcutting forests either. Proper management of owned forests does make a big difference, but it still comes down to a large amount of bulk product being created.

Then that has to be shipped to printers, then from there to the stores, and the stores have to have the big rows of shelves... All which adds up in energy costs. However if you buy a reader, you can get your books either on the internet, or perhaps your favorite coffee shop w/ a Borders kiosk inside. You can also get your daily paper downloaded at 4am each morning direct to your reader. Your whole personal library fits into your reader and one bookcase for all your picture and color books.

It's not a perfect technology yet, it's only black and white now, but if it catches on, it'll fuel improvements and price drops. In a few years we could see the vast majority of the mass market paperbacks being released solely as e-books, with print being used for color works, photos, and special books.

It's still way too soon to prnounce "the death of the printed book", but eventally that's what will happen to the majority of the books in print. Forever archived in the limitless storage of the machine, instantly accessable to everyone. No wear and tear. No pages falling out. As long as the reader technology is good, I'm all for it. I do liek the feel of the printed book in my hands, but I'm running out of room and some of my older books are starting to show their age...

Ugh it's too late and I'm rambling now. Good night. smile.gif
