Ach, I told you you needed to put them to the stake. Presidents, Senators, even State Representatives have nothing to say but "Sorry we cannot reply to every e-mail". Divine Providence gives you a plague to do away with the 4400 and you throw it away. We could have kept them confined until we found the political will to do what was necessary, but you let them out. First they just have people dancing on their strings only at arms' length, but then it turns into a drug and now, a virus! How many people did you keep locked up at Guantanamo over one mundane attack at the World Trade Center, and now three, five, ten, who knows how many times more are lost because you couldn't keep 4400 witches in an oubliette. It only took a few thousand "shots" to get a disaster like this and now you have more than that coming out. You tried civil administration - now your appointee is busy turning pens into posies.
We have one final chance. If we respond quickly, while the city is still in disorder and before their magical abilities are coordinated into a defense, we can hit Seattle with several waves of nuclear attacks and sterilize out the problem - or most of it, since I hear NTAC has already developed a teleporting freak who still carries the infection. We'll have to keep following up wherever we missed a spot or somebody uses some kind of shielding power. The casualties obviously will be extreme, in the millions, but given the choice of something less than a Holocaust and a plague that will kill three billion people - five thousand Holocausts - what does fundamental morality demand we do? Innocent people have gone to the pyre before - God will sort them out.
We'll need to follow up with constant surveillance by armed UAVs, extensive mining of the area, perhaps even chemical and biological agents to deal with any freaks that are immune to bullets and nukes. Of course we'll also need to track down and put an end to the promicin business outside the Seattle area - a smaller problem for now, but clearly one that can easily get out of control.
If the President cannot be made to see reason on this issue, it is essential that we find a combination of members of the armed forces who are willing to take resolute action. This would not be the first country or the last to suffer a short-term coup in order to ensure that a certain crisis is resolved when the government is unable to do so. Even if the political consequences of this are severe - and indeed, some recourse to martial law for purposes of mass promicin testing seems inevitable - we still need to bear in mind that the casualties caused by history's most extreme dictatorships, Stalin, Mao, Hitler, are still only in the tens of millions - not in the thousands of millions. Maybe this is the dictatorship the 4400 were sent back to stop, but if it is, they didn't stop it at all, did they? They are to blame for it. Once all this past-future hocus-pocus has been ended permanently, maybe people will have the free will to restore a more idealistic society.
The "4400"s will raise the banner of peace, try to make like they're friendly and helpful. Sure, they have one freak who sometimes will heal his friends or even a stranger for PR, but you don't see him followed around by a line of the world's desperate cancer patients. They'll say they're sorry that oops nine thousand are dead here and there, but hey, it's the beginning of heaven on earth. If you think THIS is bad, just imagine what the world would be like after they won, after the three billion are dead and the faction fights start up among mind-control freaks fighting for control over all the others. We need to close our ears to lies and let the fire do the talking.
