Anybody notice how, with Agassi in control, the commentary never once strayed from the two competitors? His comments were about the two on the court and the match they were playing. And Agassi didn't allow it to stray from them the few chances he could have, ignoring the best efforts of McEnroe and Robinson to do so - he always brought it back to where it belongs.

He instinctively knew what was important.

Geesh, that's all we've been saying (whining? crying?) on these boards for two weeks now! To watch a tennis match and the booth is actually paying attention to it!

How simple! How elegant! How appropriate!

Absolutely. Agassi also made a point of keeping his voice low, obviously trying not to detract
from the match. He got quieter and quieter until McEnroe actually lowered his voice. They never got his diplomatically subtle hints that he really didn't want to talk during points.

When I started watching tennis, none of the commentators conversed during points. They're always talking about the players' etiquette; there should be rules of etiquette for commentators.

How about a little respect for the players actually playing the match, as well as some respect for the real tennis fans who are trying to watch and enjoy it. I don't think I've ever been more annoyed trying to watch a tennis match as I have been during the U.S. Open this year, and I've been watching tennis for about 35 years.

I thought Agassi was great last night, as well. However, I am surprised you weren't upset that he, too, talks during points! (Just a little friendly ribbing.)

Why yes, sometimes he did, about the point being played or the stroke being used. Bit of a difference in that than the normal rubbish McEnroe and Robinson talk about. And it was his first time but you could tell he was into the match, not like it was a sideshow that they came back to every so often... "oh look! he's got two break points! now, where were we...".

Do you think Agassi could announce for USA next year? Maybe the ratings would go up because so many people wouldn't have to turn the tennis off because Courier couldn't shut up.
