I have listened to the discussions about who is the best "ever" tennis player on the male side and really wonder if this question can be answered. It is like comparing apples and oranges. rolleyes.gif

The cream always rises to the top but can we compare Connors, Bjorg, McEnrow, Sampras (etc.) with Federer? The game has changed so much. Courts have improved, while the evolution of the racquet is always on the move. Each during his time was exciting to watch. Each was the best during his time working within the constraints of the variables. As I said I really do not think we can compare this players from the different periods to Federer. dry.gif

We cannot even compare their wins in tournaments really. Yes their are the slams that have been around forever but new tournaments have appeared on the scene and some of the players of the past have never even played in them. unsure.gif

I do not mean to take anything away from Roger Federer's ability to play tennis. He is the best right now and seems unbeatable except in the French tournament at Garros. Go Roger and keep up the great playing of the game. rolleyes.gif Keep that Swiss Flag flying.

Yeah, I really don't pay any attention to tennis, except when they talk about it on SportsCenter.

But I konw what you mean when they compare players. You can't really compare, because things do change a lot.

i actually would disagree, thats like saying that Michael Jordan isnt the greatest b-ball player to this day. he is. there are greats, and then there are almost greats. thats just how it is. you can say that someone was the all time greatest at something. im a huge, huge, Jeff Gordon fan, but that doesnt mean im going to deny that Richard Petty was and to this day is the all time best nascar driver so far. he was awsome, so far no one has compared, although Jeff is close. that also not to say that someone cant become greater than the person who is labeled the all time great at the sport, they just have to measure up to them. thats how it is in the world of sports.

anywho, i think the question can be answered, and it is, that my opinion at least.,

How can you compare sports legends from the past to today's athletes.....they are so much stronger and bigger it almost isn't fair to compare.....it wasn't too long ago when baseball players were told not to lift and workout because it would hurt them on the field....imagine if the greats of yesteryear (Wagner, Ruth, Mays...etc) had the advantages of todays athletes....just something to think about....
