Hey guys, it's time to take a look @ a title that has become the symbol of Summerslam:
The WWE Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship
In its 19 year the I-C Heavyweight Gold has been one of the most respected and fighting titles in the history of Summerslam.
Let's take a look @ its history:
The very 1st Summerslam took place in 1998
The very 1st match for the I-C Gold was The Ultimate Warrior against The Honky Tonk Man @ the World's Most Famous Arena Madison Square Garden
and on that night, The Warrior went on to def. The Honky Tonk Man and he became the NEW Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion for the very 1st time and on that night he also ended the 14 month title reign of the Honky Tonk Man
One year later in 1989, The Ultimate Warrior appeared again as the I-C Heavyweight Champ when he def. the late "Ravishing" Rick Rude to retain the I-C Gold
In 1990, The Late Texas Tornado def. The Late Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig to become the NEW I-C Champ and it was his only title that he's held in the WWE
One year later in 1991, Mr. Perfect returned to Summerslam as the I-C Champ, but only this time, he would lose the gold once again, only this time to Bret "The Hitman" Hart and it was Bret's 1st reign as I-C Champion
He won it @ Madison Square Garden
The following year in 1992 after Bret Hart def. Roddy Piper for the I-C Gold @ Wrestlemania VIII The Hitman would have a title defense @ Summerslam, only this time in front of the largest audience in Summerslam History over 80,000 fans @ Wembley Stadium in Manchester, England against The British Bulldog
It was the biggest and most talked about match in Summerslam History and in the history of the I-C Gold and it was also the biggest match in the careers of Bret and Davey Boy @ the end, THe British Bulldog def. The Hitman and it was Davey Boy's only reign as I-C Champ, and @ the end, Bret Hart and The Bulldog would shake hands and Bret's Sister and Davey's Widow Diana Hart Smith came in to celebrate and it was also the 1st time that the Intecontinental Title was defended in a Main Event @ a Summerslam PPV
In 1993, HBK Shawn Michaels def. The late "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig via countout to retain the I-C Gold
In 1994, "Razor Ramon" Scott Hall def. "Deisel" Kevin Nash to regain the I-C Heavyweight Title for a 2nd time
The following year in 1995 in a rematch from Wrestlemania X, HBK would def. Hall in a Ladder Rematch to retain the Gold
In 1997, Stone Cold Steve Austin def. the late Owen Hart to become the NEW I-C Champion for the very 1st time
In 1998, Triple H would go on to def. The Rock to become the NEW I-C Champ @ Madison Square Garden
1999 was a 1st for Summerslam, when Jeff Jarrett def. D-Lo Brown to win both, The I-C Title and the European Heavyweight Title
In 2000, was also a 1st, it was a Mixed Tag Team Match for the I-C Gold when Chyna and the late Eddie Gurerro def. Val Venis and Trish Stratus as Chyna pinned Trish to become the I-C Champ for a 2nd time
In 2001 during the Invasion Era, Edge def. Lance Storm to become the NEW I-C Heavyweight Champion for a 2nd time
In 2002, Rob Van Dam def. the late Chris Benoit to regain the I-C Gold for a 3rd time
In 2004, Edge would def. Batista and Chris Jericho in his old hometown of Toronto, Canada in a Triple Threat Match to retain the I-C Gold
and now, this Sunday Night will be the 16th time that the I-C Gold will be defended @ Summerslam and this will be another Triple Threat Match, only this time, it will be Umaga defending against Carlito and Mr. Kennedy.
