Okay, I have left you all alone for awhile now. I am not the fan of Psych that you all are but I watch it every week. It started as an obsession for me because I live in Santa Barbara and I work in law enforcement. I had high hopes for this show but they made SO many stupid, avoidable mistakes that it pissed me off!

Just when I thought they finally got their act together, reason 1 of why you haven't heard from me in months... they go an muck it up again.

In PSY vs PSY (great title by the way!):
A counterfeiter passes fake money at the Home Depot.
Later in the episode he is spotted "all the way in Goleta" huh.gif

FACT
Goleta is only about 3-5 miles from the Santa Barbara city limits and maybe 10 whole miles from the Santa Barbara Police Department. (11.5 miles according to Yahoo Maps I'll drive it this weekend and let you know.... )

BTW the only Home Depot in Santa Barbara is in Goleta! tongue.gif

There is a home improvement store within Santa Barbara City Limits...called the Home Improvement store... but there are also many chain stores.
I suspect the reason it had to be home improvement was to get Shawn on the Forklift... rolleyes.gif

However the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Dept handles calls in Goleta.. Therefore the FBI should have been meeting with the Sheriff not the Chief of Police. Lassiter and Juliet should have been nowhere near the case.

Okay. I know most you don't care because you don't know SB that well but I care and that's why I write. Besides, these mistakes are easy to fix/ catch. Hell send me a script and I will proof it for logistical content. wink.gif

----
At least they fixed the uniforms.

My favorite goof is still the one from the first season when Juliet says "We have a confirmed 11-44" Yep you have confirmed the dead body lying on the couch in front of you is indeed dead... she meant a confirmed "11-45" which means suicide....Shawn proved it to be a 187 though not an 11-45 or a murder instead of a suicide... way to go Shawn.

from what you've writen, it seems like you know your stuff! You need to be an advisor for the show...you should email Steve Franks. Don't give up on the show.

Exactly! And a great show at that. I don't concern myself with the minor discrepancies in any show I watch actually. Afterall, no one said they had to be absolute and true to real life. Where would that leave all the sci-fi shows? LOL
PsychedOut
Being that obervant is really cool, and is even a little like Shawn's gift!

My dad used to tell me all the things that were wrong about movies before I saw them, and I got angry at him cause then I spotted them myself and it ruined it haha but he was faaar more critical than this.
Leesha
I get where snoz is coming from-sorta- because I used to teach history and it makes me crazy when cartoon movies mess up history. I would have students come in and tell me I was wrong about the whole "Pocahontas' thing. Riiight. I am wrong. Hokay! blink.gif

Sci Fi is sci fi you expect them to take liberties with reality but cop shows are different. There has to be some basis in the truth otherwise they could throw you in jail for, let's say, for littering... it's just not realistic.

My point always has and always will be, that they make an effort to get some things right so why not go all the way. If they are going to reference actual locales in the Santa Barbara area then take a minute and a half to do the extra research about that locale. No one in Santa Barbara complains about going "all the way to Goleta" because its just a couple of miles down the road.

Dude, you realize that it is a TV show, right? The point is to tell a story, not to be an accurate representation of the SBPD for posterity. It is on USA, not the History Channel.

If lawyers watched courtroom stuff and got ticked when they did it wrong...well, they'd never be able to watch any courtroom stuff. smile.gif Same with nurses. We'd have to stop watching almost every show on TV, because they all go into hospitals or show death at some point.

My personal favorite is the way they show a murderer pushing all the air out of the syringe, even flicking it to get every little bubble. The purpose of that, IRL, isn't to help with the injection. It is to get the air out so that there isn't a possibility of pushing an air embolus into someone. Since a murderer's plan is to kill someone, they wouldn't worry about the air embolus. smile.gif But it is TV. Makes it more dramatic for the overwhelming majority of folks who don't know the difference. smile.gif

Some nurses refuse to watch hospital-based shows like House because the inaccuracies drive them nuts...but they're missing out on a good show! Just like you would be if you keep yourself all hung up on them with Psych.

So, chill out. Nobody cares if it is 128 or a 129 or a 2130 except you. And you shouldn't care, either. Make peace with the fact that TV gets stuff wrong and watch the shows you enjoy for the stories. Don't sweat the details. smile.gif

I can't help it. I do care. You know I suspend my belief on a lot of stuff, I know that CSI's don't interrogate suspects (CSI). I know that DA's aren't hanging out at the Police dept waiting for the officers to update them on a case (see any law & order). And I know they get the court stuff and hospital stuff wrong alot too. Real life takes time the shows are only 42 minutes long. I let that stuff go.

I also don't pick on the fact that the landscape is all wrong. Like the Sean's father's house is wrong. Although we have houses one the beach there is only one residential beach as populated as the one behind his house however, anyone who actually lives here lives across the street from the beach not next to it. (but I suppose an accurate locale is hard to find in Canada). And he interior of the police department is wrong. (but theirs is better looking than the real PD so I let it go). Detective O'Hara is FAR too young to be a Det. You will never hear me complain about these things. These are the things I make allowances for.

My point is- if they make an effort to try to get it right then they should fully commit. Don't do a half assed job once you start because we are going notice. Honestly.

And for the record, someone the show must care because they are making far less mistakes this season than they did in season one.

After that pilot they made many corrections. So I have to say they hear the complaints. And believe me, I am not the only one complaining I know a lot of people who take issue with it. There's a lot of Santa Barbara pride here and we just want people to know it.

...Which is exactly why we have a criticism Topic.

We(Psych viewers) want the show to succeed(not that it isn't), and if certain detail (even if minute), cause a person to not watch...then thats one less viewer(*ratings*) missing out on a great tv show.

While we're on the topic of accuracy - it seems that Psych's self-appointed technical advisor snozberries' doesn't miss a thing, except for the little fact that the character's name is SHAWN, and not Sean. Just saying.

]I am so glad somebody else is annoyed with the mistakes!!! We are locals and have lived in Goleta -- me close to 30 years, my husband since a kid, and my daughter was born in SB. It really isn't that difficult to correct pronunciations of street names and the cities. As to getting things wrong, it does make a difference to us locals. Thank you for staying on top of things!! And yes, Goleta is not far away from SB. As to the police station, I've been to many meetings there and it doesn't look as nice inside as shown on TV. Keep posting their mistakes -- we support you!

I don't recall anyone mentioning the fact that the show is not even recorded in Santa Barbara, it's filmed in Vancouver, Canada I believe. So the mere inaccuracies should be expected considering they aren't working within the real perimeters of the city and state that they are trying to bring to life on the screen.

For heaven's sake, I know that you mean well in your criticism of the show but at the end of the day you have to learn to breathe, stretch, shake and let go of the facts and enjoy Psych for its entertainment value. When I want to be entertained and educated I switch to the Discovery and/or History channel. If your only gripe with the show is the lack of probable "FACTS" of Santa Barbara then maybe you should practice changing the channel. biggrin.gif

So I understand people being annoyed with the discrepancies. I took issue with the 65 million years off episode because with less than 5 minutes of research the writers could have gotten their stuff right. The professor was a paleontologist, which means he should have been in the paleontology department. What department was going under and mentioned repeatedly? The archaeology department. This is completely wrong and frustrated me the whole time I was watching it because I am an archaeologist. Archaeology is part of anthropology, which is the study of humans. Archaeologists study human culture through the cultural remains. We DO NOT study dinosaurs because humans and dinosaurs did not live at the same time. I brushed off the first mention of archaeology because it was by Shawn, who is often a little off, but then Lassiter mentioned it. That showed that the writers simply did not take a few minutes to verify what archaeology is in reality. I love Psych, but that episode drove me nuts (as you can tell). Too many people already believe archaeologists dig dinosaurs to have a show help perpetuate that idea. I now apologize for the rant. I just had to complain about that to someone.

It's okay. Say to yourself, it's okay. Now lie down and tell my how that makes you feel, haha. I totally get where your coming from; I often criticize the show for tiny little flaws. I agree with you and others on the forum, about little nitpicky details that would only benifit the show more.
HiImMarvin
We could nit pick all day. I mean, in season one "Who Ya Gonna Call"

When Shawn starts to put stuff together he mentions that when they looked in the car that tried to smash into them there was a toothpick on the seat. Yet when you watch the scene the toothpick is on the floor.

I work in production so while it does bother me at times I forgive it.

There are a hundred people working and many times they don't feel the need to hash over the details.

Hey I'm not perfect... I admit I didn't do my research on the correct spelling of Shawn. (Although I did spell it correctly in initial post and mispelled it in a follow up one)

Live and learn but I admit to and correct my mistakes. I complain that the writers don't do the research and I should have done the same. Humble Apologies. But I stand by my complaints.

Thanks! I missed this one. Law Enforcement is my thing so I didn't catch the Palentology vs Archeology thing. But I get that its annoying when they make these easily correctable mistakes. I mean all its takes is a few extra minutes right. Or ask someone who knows they will tell you whats what and pretty quickly.

That's a continuity problem that the script supervisor or the editor should have caught. These mistakes are always found in movies and TV shows. I can list hundreds of them for you now but I won't. My complaint with the show are the technical inconsistancies. I let many mistakes go because I understand the nature of a production schedule. As I said before, the show is set in Santa Barbara but filmed in Canada so I let the mistakes in the locale go. The one thing I am not willing to budge on is the script content. It is the easiest thing to fix and the first thing they should get right. All they have to do is make a phone call to someone familar with SB or get a script advisor/technical advisor. One read through of the script and the mistakes can be fixed quickly.
