hmm.. any ideas why the ratings are going down so far? ..in my point of view this season is so far great - only thing i miss is that they should continue Tom trying to find alana...
First, it is hard to follow the story unless you have watched before, so viewership really can only go down.
Second, they take 9 months off between seasons, which lets a lot of the excitement die down and diminishes the need to find out what will happen next. I got over my withdrawal symptoms after a few months, and I don't think the powers-that-be did a very good job getting me to ache for my next fix. The web-based stuff they did seems to have been done in stealth mode, and there was no big push to get the word out that the show was about to start again (nor did they run a marathon or many repeats during the offseason).
Third, after being away for 9 months, they further delayed the primary story by doing three extra crispy episodes to start the season (#2, 3, and 4). None of these included Jordan Collier (they only signed him for 10 episodes this season and decided to get the missing three out of the way early). If you really liked Richard, Alana, Jordan, Kevin and Tess, Maia, and many of the other regulars from previous seasons, you didn't get much satisfaction early on.
Fourth, the Dead Zone seems to have lost its way, so Sunday = USA Network is not the case anymore (to be fair to the Dead Zone, for reasons I cannot fathom,it still gets slightly better ratings than the 4400).
Finally, who is the bad guy? Isabelle has no power. Ryland is missing. The Nova group hasn't been heard from. I think some people need to cheer on the good guys and boo the bad guys. We have the mysterious marked now, but 30% of the audience already left. An ambitious city councilman is not quite the same as Ryland.
On the bright side, it sounds like the show has a worldwide audience, so I would hope that a decision to continue would be based on more than just mediocre ratings on USA (it's not the example I would seek to follow, but, as much as I try, I can't shake the thought of Baywatch and its worldwide popularity out of my head when I say that).
