Full Version: Bruce Campbell?

I don't recall ever seeing Bruce Campbell in anything, I keep hearing everyone say they watch anything he is in. What was he in and has he ever been a lead or is he a boozin', wise-cracking character actor? He's great in this role, that's for sure.

Thanks. That explains it. I have seen some of these movies and if he wasn't the main character I ignored him or didn't see the show/movie. I hated Spiderman 2, so I guess that's why I didn't notice he was the nemesis. Anyway, I'm a fan of this role. Love him!!!!
ladymahogany
Just to clarify, Alfred Molina is the nemesis in Spiderman 2. You probably didn't notice Bruce Campbell because he had such a small role. I love Spiderman 2 and have seen in several times...didn't recognize him in this show.

Where were these commercials broadcasted? Most are around 30 seconds. These are more one minute or more. I loved when he barked at the end of the Hungry like a Wolf one. He's hilarious!!!!!

I love the Evil Dead movies as well as Army of Darkness....

The only I saw broadcast was the never ending sailboat, if you have it, if you need it, if you want it one.

I had to add this (4 of 4) clip, I just wish the sound for the crowd was better. The man is hysterical and that is all I am gonna say. For those of you with foul language issues please do not watch, I don't wanna hear it- you have been warned.

I first became familiar with him as he started in Xena: The Warrior Princess as Autolycus. He was a theif with a heart. LOL!

Bruce is a B movie cult hero! He's one of those actors that has real fans that will literally watch anything he appears in, no matter how "bad" it is and love every minute of it, just because we love Bruce. Tom Cruise has nothing on the Chin! wink.gif

PS: Not that Burn Notice is bad in any way, on the contrary it's actually quite good, which makes me happy for Bruce! biggrin.gif

Here's something more for Bruce Campbell fans. Cross posted from imdb.com , highly amusing!

My husband and I remember him from the series he did called Brisco County, Jr. He was great in that show, and he is totally perfect as the boozing, womanizing, yet lovable best friend in Burn Notice.

Hey, nice touch showing a snippet of Bruce's interview as part of the add tonight. Not sure I've seen such a thing in a commercial for a show. Of course Bruce does it so well, and I think it, once again, shows some real depth on the part of you people. I'm about to see the fourth episode, and I'm still betting on a cult following, aside from my other previously stated views on the phenominal thoughtfulness that has contributed to the apparent super wide appeal of the show to begin with.
I'll say it again: Keep it coming!!
PS "Wow, are those real !?"
vestokes
True. USA appears to be trying to give the people what they want: Characters. People with whom you can love, hate, sympathize, empathize, or just be fascinated. I love Psych and Monk also, I have not gotten into the DeadZone but plan to rent the DVDs of the previous seasons to catch up. Saw the first season of the 4400 and it was good but not my cup of tea.

Congrats of the show.

Bruce has been around forever. I first saw him in Army of Darkness. He's also great friends with the Raimi's Ted and Sam. I know Ted, he's an interesting fellow to say the least. If you go onto youtube and search for Ted Raimi Bruce Campbell it is the first link listed. It's about what they've been up to, it is hilarious!

Hey all you Bruce Campbell fans. Army of Darkness is now on DVD. I don't know if it was already out there or not but it popped up on my Netflix list. I should have it by Tuesday. I've never seen Bruce in anything besides BN, Spiderman (I heard he was in it but don't remember) and the Old Spice commercials.
FruityNut
I've known about Campbell for a long time since my best friend is a horror movie fan. And then I used to see him on Xena. I'm betting it's his doing that Lucy Lawless will be a guest star. There's a video clip on this site where he talks about his cult fan following. As much as I love this show, it has compelled me to join a forum to talk about it, I'm betting most of the ratings come from Bruce's fans.

I'm enjoying my lazy long weekend by surfing my beloved YouTube.

IFC's Dinner For Five with Roger Corman, Bruce Campbell, Rob Zombie and Faizon Love. I really loved the premise of this show as it's not a straight on interview but a casual conversation that shows more of the real person than an actor or director pitching their latest project. This is the first of three parts and most times the men defer to the more experienced and famous Roger Corman

I hope not to get flamed but I have to say this:

I just saw Evil Dead 2 last night. Sorry, this was not a good movie. Granted it was done 20 years ago. It still sucked. I like Bruce. Hated Evil Dead. It was just too ridiculous, over the top, and went on too long. I felt the same way about Army of Darkness. I love scary movies. I loved the first Halloween and the Exorcist. These were great scary movies. BC's are campy for the first 30 minutes then it's time to turn it off.

Love him now in BN.
JackStiles
As you said, it was done more than 20 years ago, so realistically, whether or not one person out of 6 billion likes it or not is sort of irrelevant now, isn't it? It inspired a sequel, a line of toys, a comic book series, a Broadway musical ohmy.gif ... and the sequel was popular enough that the producers got a television syndication gig to do another "ancient" horror/action/comedy, which became "Hercules." Which spun-off four more shows, totalling over 300 hours of tv still running in syndication worldwide, one of which starred Bruce himself. Likewise the director pretty much made his reputation with it, which led bigger and bigger films culminating in the 3 Spidey movies. So it seems to have more than achieved its goals.... so I think, 20+ years after the fact, its reputation will remain intact even if one person didn't care for it. laugh.gif

None of which erases the fact that it wasn't really that great of a movie. Also, I'm SURE I'm my opinion is not in the minority.
JackStiles
So? If 10 million people ejoy something, it's a runaway success, and it doesn't really matter what the other 290 million think. The majority of Americans (more than 295 million) don't watch Burn Notice, and most of them don't even know what it is. Just remember - in grade school, we don't get praised for being in the majority, since the majority is the bottom 95% of the class. laugh.gif

BTW, in case you missed it - there has been no way in the history of humanity for anyone to definitively determine if something is "good" or "bad." People often type otherwise on message boards... but every single opinion ever volunteered for free anywhere and a quarter won't even buy you a cup of cofee these days.
vestokes
You could also find 10 million people who don't like the movie. The success or failure of the franchise has as much to do with the amount it cost versus the amount it made. Generally these are low budget so there is always a good chance of a substantial profit margin.

I am not trying to start a flame. I started out by saying I didn't want that. I watched this movie a couple of days ago and it was not remotely interesting to me. The fact that others like it will not change that. I guess it could be considered campy but if the rest of the movies are the same then I will pass.

I am however glad that Bruce's talents were put to better use in other ventures. BN being the latest.
FruityNut
I've found that if I like something I lot, it becomes personal. Whether or not I have anything to do with it, I instinctively feel the need to defend it when others don't agree with my opinion. But, I understand that not everyone will see things my way so I override my instinct and use my brain to just accept the difference of opinion. Perfect example here is my "FIONA RAWKS! Long live Fiona/Michael tug of war!" But others do not feel the same way.

I've never seen the Evil Dead series, but it's considered cult classics. Many people don't care for it, but there are people who do. I loved Rocky Horror Picture Show, went to almost every weekend midnight show for two years. Would I expect other people to like it, let alone understand the obessesion? No.
JackStiles
Well exactly. Everything is subject to personal taste, and subjective. So a 50 Cent fan might say that Keith Urban sucks, but Keith Urban isn't exactly trying to please rap fans. Even technical proficiency doesn't have anything to do with entertainment value, since Barry Manilow is definitely a better musician than, say, Johnny Rotten, and Wayne Newton can definitely sing better than Bob Dylan. But try to tell the fans of any one of those that the other is any good. Any pro football team is technically more proficient than any high school team...but plenty of people would rather see their high school team play.

For that matter, someone with a PhD in acting or film-making, and 40 years of experience and and a dozen famous books to his credit might technically be qualified to offer some professional opinion on something being "good" or bad" ...but then that would be one crackpot professor's opinion, outweighed by that of thousands of others. And there's no convention where all the experts in the world get together to determine if something is "good" or "bad," since they determined a few millenia ago that there is no such thing. Granted, people online often disagree with this...but that's why they have to volunteer it for free online - no one will pay them to publish it anywhere! laugh.gif Basically, if you're smart enough and accomplished enough to be entitled to a professional opinion on any sort of popular entertainment.... then you're smart enough to have realized this long ago. Doesn't mean I'm any kind of expert... but I just paid attention in first grade when the teacher explained that what one person likes is just their opinion, and doesn't affect anything at all.

And again, after almost 25 years... does it really matter what someone thinks about an old movie? Everyone involved has already made their fortunes off of it, and established wildly successful careers as a result, so whether or not one person even rents or buys it or not is the difference in, what, maybe a penny in royalties to the producers?
vestokes
Sorry that I didn't like the movies. I was more than willing to try, since I truly like Bruce Campbell on BN and the Old Spice commercials As a matter of fact I don't care for any of his work; other than Burn Notice and Brisco County Junior; I saw one epi. Maybe if I was 13 years old I'd enjoy the Evil Deads or Army of Darkness. I also didn't like Tornado or Screaming Brain or Alien Apocalypse.

I didn't state my opinion to get approval from anyone. I was just letting the posters know that I had watched the movies they suggested and I didn't care for them. I don't expect that anyone that likes his work to change their minds. We're all adults and are able to tolerate differing opinions. I also don't think my opinion should be too shocking considering the quality and content of the films. The fact that he is a cult hero won't sway my opinion one way or the other. I still like him, am glad he made the movies that a huge number of people enjoy, but hope fervently that he continues work on better material, such as BN. I would love to see him in another Old Spice commercial. Now that would be something worth watching.

Well, I don't know if it could be said that Vestokes' opinion didn't affect anything at all, since it succeeded in getting you a little bit hot under the collar, there, JackStiles. biggrin.gif

For what it's worth, I consider myself a BC fan obviously, but the Evil Dead movies were not among my faves either. I was introduced to Bruce by my best friend, who made me watch Army of Darkness in high school, and I became a fan of his because I thought he was totally hot, not because the movie spoke to me. I watched ED 1 and 2 after that, but didn't like them as much, because they didn't have as much camp to them, which is what I liked about Army of Darkness. I'm not into horror films just for horror's sake, hence my reluctance to watch Alien Apocalypse, and some of Bruce's other roles.

I do understand that the majority of his fans seem to come from the Evil Dead/Sci Fi realm, and I'm perfectly fine in being in the minority whose favorite Bruce work consists of Brisco County Jr., Jack of All Trades, and now Burn Notice. What can I say, I like the roles that show him as a ruggedly handsome and yet totally adorable man, not a comic book superhero. But that's just me. I certainly don't expect my opinions to change the world or anything. wink.gif

Evil Dead was campy cheesy fun, and at the time (1981 pre-cgi) the effects were cool. (Am I the only one who remembers how cool the effects in Clash of the Titans were when that movie came out (1981 if I recall correctly)? Perhaps it could be that I was much more easily impressed and amused 25+ years ago. rolleyes.gif (And who can forget BeeBo the owl? But I digress.) Yes, Bruce was smokin hot in Evil Dead. He is now a smoldering fire- much nicer to get closer to and cuddle up with than an all out blaze. I agree, the Evil Dead movies are meh, and I AM into horror movies, not the gore-porn they call horror flicks now, instead I prefer the psychological horror flicks. I never got into Xena/Hercules. But I did watch Jack of all Trades and Briscoe County jr, and thoroughly enjoyed both, especially BCjr. I also really enjoyed his turn on Ellen.

Now I know this goes against type, and don't get me wrong, I love me my ruggedly handsome, adorable cuddly Bruce, but I would love to see him play a truly evil- and not in a campy way- individual. A nice juicy psychopath. The best pychopaths are the ones you don't see coming, and nothing is more creepier or disturbing than a psychopath for whom you can cheer- even if it is under your breath- or a vile individual for whom you can have sympathy. Somewhat like Robin Williams' turns in Insomnia and One Hour Photo. Harrison Ford even tried his hand at the dark side in What Lies Beneath. I think not only could Bruce pull it off but he could do it with very blood chilling results. Kind of like the nice old lady next door that is always baking pies for the neighbors for the holidays only to find out she has a penchant for killing and mutilating and storing in her freezer the neighborhood pets.

And BCF, don't worry about Alien Apocalypse. Its not really a horror movie- although there is spurting of blood when the insect like aliens bite the offending human head off every once and a while. It is still a Sci-fi channel C-movie. Granted it was fun just to watch Bruce in action, but wow, that was two hours my brain will never recover from- isn't it a bad thing when you are actually looking forward to the commercials? IMO, Man With a Screaming Brain was hilarious, I'm not sure if it was supposed to be an outright comedy but I laughed my butt off. And Stacy Keach, bonus!! Stacy Keach with a bad Russian accent, GRAVY!! hahahahaha Definitely a movie for the sake of mindless fun. biggrin.gif

*sigh Is it the 13th yet?

LOL!!! Yes, 1981 pre-cgi is right. My gentleman friend (mmm doesn't sound as cute as Sam's lady friend) remembers loving ED back in the '80s. Upon seeing it again, he was shocked he like it but is still a die hard BC fan. He even scolded me when I repeated what I posted in this thread; this was before he saw the movie again. Even after seeing them again, he took JackStiles' side in the debate.

So, JackStiles, I understand completely. BC fans are definitely die hard and are staunch defenders of his work. As I said before, I am happy for his success because he wouldn't have been able to do all the things I like if it was not for ED. In the IFC Dinner interview he mentioned one of the Coen Brothers worked on the ED films. They are my favorite directors. Blood Simple and Fargo were fantastic. BC helped lead the way with his independent films. So, despite my dislike of his early work, its importance, as you so aptly pointed out, is not lost on me.

Now THAT sounds awesome! I hadn't given much thought to it, but you're right, I would love to see Bruce in a role like that in a good psychological thriller, not in a gore-porn as you put it. I want to see him in something that totally stretches everything we've ever seen Bruce Campbell do. Ooh, I'm getting chills just thinking about it. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info on Alien Apocalypse. It never did sound like my cup of tea, although I have it and Screaming Brain on my tivo from last weekend. I know which one I'll be watching first. smile.gif

Bruce actually has played a villain on occasion. In "Assault on Dome 4" he played a variation on Alan Rickman's character in "Die Hard," although it is a slightly campy villain. And he played what appears to be a villain in his X-Files episode... and definitely a villain in his Charmed episode (although not a serial killer or anything.) He's also the antagonist in his Timecop episode, although there again, he's not a boo-hiss villain, but rather a typically cocky Bruce character who's a good guy gone wrong. In "Serving Sara" he's the villain, but that of course is a comedy. And in "Terminal Invasion," he is the protagonist, but not exactly a hero, given that his character is a convicted murderer and escapee.

I think though that he is a traditional villain in "Icebreaker," the movie he did w/ Sean Astin, and for which he shaved his head. I've never seen it though. As far as I know it's not a comedy, but I assume he's just a traditional criminal bad guy leader, like any any action movie.

Thanks for the update, JackStiles. He also played the villain in the Lois and Clark episodes he did, being the head of a crime family, but still played it with that "Bruce smirk" as I like to call it. I read the reviews for Icebreaker on Amazon, and not even Bruce could save that movie, apparently. biggrin.gif Terminal Invasion sounds like it might have potential, but isn't widely available. I'd like to see him as a villain in a movie that doesn't fit inside the sci-fi genre, though, something like a creepy Hannibal Lecter type of role or something, where he's chilling and scary with little more than a look.
