OK, what's up with the pineapples that have shown up a couple of times? First in the general commercial, now as a hospital gift to Ms. Saffron? What is the symbolism . . . or hidden joke? Just wonderin'.

It all started during the pilot episode. James said that it just became his selfish attempt to get pineapple in every episode. His reasoning was that it's a refreshing snack and what not. They mentioned it in one of the commentaries. It's just a running thing on the show now. I love it. The pineapple makes me happy.

I agree, every time I see the pineapple I crack up!! biggrin.gif

Thanks for explaining it, I didn't know. smile.gif

Ha ha, I didn't know that James started it. But I love the pineapple thing. I have to start giving them as gifts a la Shawn. x3

Pineapple Sightings:

Shawn gives the Stress hotline a Pineapple when he introduces himself and Gus to them as their new Neighbors.
Shawn asks the victim's best friend (I forgot her name) if she wants to split a Pinapple with him as an introduction. (I find their conversation highly amusing:
Shawn: Would you like to split a Pineapple?
The Girl: Are you crazy person?
Shawn: I was about to ask you the same question... except I was going to add 'who likes to make toast' to the end of mine.)
Shawn brings Saffron a pineapple as a get well present in 'American Duos'.
In the character's section of the site, one of his 'Three Websites' is: www.dole-plantation.com, a site that offers 'Hawaii's Complete Pineapple Experience', including The Worlds Largest Maze (Pinapple shaped) and a train called 'Pineapple express'. This place must be like Shawn's Disneyworld xD
Mejay
I love the pineapple sightings!!!
If no onecaught this one, in the "Spelling Bee" episode he was holding a piece of pineapple the night that he got into the motorcycle accident. It was in his hand when Corbin told him the doghouse looked terrible and then James chucked it at the car.
I never would've have figured that out if I hadn't watched the commentary. biggrin.gif
MooseyDLK
Pineapples cause accidents too xD

I'll have to try and Rewatch 9 Lives x3

Oh, and I found another Pineapple thing. In one of the Promos for the July Season, Shawn and Gus are there with pineapples biggrin.gif
See the ad here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=0Ca7TiHBfRw
buppyboo
Yes, and don't forget about the pineapple smoothies that appeared when Gus got caught by the Chief sitting in her cushy pregnancy chair.
Jak
or when Shaun snuck into Gus' place and b4 they took off he asked if he wanted to cut up a pineapple for the road.
Man I love this show.
stephie1678
There's another ep (I can't remember which one) when Shawn is eating cut up pineapple at his desk while talking to gus...I wanna a t-shirt that says "Want some pineapple??"...LOL..
PineappleTastic
Oh! I found another pineapple sighting.

In the Episode "Forget Me Not" they were speaking of buying Pineapple scones.
:3

It was so great.

I would totally buy a shirt from USA that says, "Wanna split a pineapple?" And I would wear it to class all the time. Dude that's a good idea...they should totally consider makin' those tongue.gif

That would be awesome!

It would also be cool if on front, there was a picture of a pineapple, and on the back, it had the Psych logo. xD

There are so many things you could do with that idea, it's crazy.
ladymahogany
Guys please post these t-shirt ideas in this thread: http://forums.usanetwork.com/index.php?showtopic=391195.
Admin said he will pass them along, and we may actually get one for sale!! How cool would that be!

i love him and his pineapple obsessions.

James Roday explains it all on the new videos posted on the main site of Psych on USA network. I can't believe how it started off all as a joke and now it is probably the main symbol of the show. Pineapple suites Shawn well because it is just an odd looking fruit and almost humorous, but on the inside it is sweet and delicious!!!

Since it hasn't been added yet, we need to add the Easy Bake Oven Pineapple Upside-down "Cake" to the lists of pineapple sightings. laugh.gif
locachica
I think it's a cute obsession. But i remember in one episode Shawn and Gus were talking about his 'distaste' for pointy things... well, pineapples are pointy.

the distaste for pointy things!? hmm. Maybe in a future episode Shawn will elaborate. Maybe after this season..he'll change it up...and we'll have to discover what new hidden item is in every episode, using our own observation skills. I definintly think the pineapple thing is a hillarious running gag...and a game for us fans.

I wonder when Dole will start advertising? haha!

For this show, it's pineapples. For Burn Notice, it's yogurt. I only watch a few select shows, but I wonder how many other shows have running threads. Are food items common?

I watch Burn Notice, and I haven't noticed a yogurt in every episode(or at least not like the pineapple site gag on Psych) I do remember Michael eating yogurt though, and maybe Fiona saying somthing about it in another episode.

Re edit:

Yup, so far it has been in every episode. It must be some wacky thing USA network is doing. I have noticed that other network shows have a running theme as well. I still would like to know if Dole is going to start advertising on Psych. On Kyle** (an abc family show) sourpatch kids candy now sponsors the show, after the candy was seen in almost every episode. Strange!
tgifnight14
my sister and i did notice the yogurt thing on burn notice..michael is always snacking on yogurt hehe..and speaking of pineapples, for all of you fans of delicious flavor, try the agua pina @ el torito, its pineapple juice with a slice of lime...very refreshing biggrin.gif ..im sure shawn would love it hehe

One of my all-time favorite ever shows is one from the early 1990s called "Father Ted," an Irish show made with English money (not a total Brit com). There were a few running gags in "Ted," like one priest who died in nearly every episode of the second series (kinda like Kenny from The Simpsons), and there was another gag about an unseen priest called Father Bigley--always described, but again, never seen, so you always wondered, "What does this man look like?!" Runners are just so much fun! It's a hilarious show that sometimes still runs on BBC America or PBS, but definitely is on DVD if you've got Netflix or somesuch and can find it.

That show is so funny.
My family loves it. We own all of the series too. smile.gif
I still like Psych better though.

Ugh I totally can't remember which episode..but Shawn and Gus were drinking Pineapple Juice Boxes..(maybe Forget Me Not?)

I love the whole Pinapple thing. I didn't know it was a running joke until I listened to the commentary on the first season DVD.

I think my fave Pinapple moments were the scenario in my icon-'Wanna split a Pinapple?' and The Pinapple upside-down cake in the Easy Bake Oven. I know there's lots more good ones, but those stuck out in my mind the most!

Cymbeline
Buffy the Vampire Slayer used to have a lot of running gags, but one of them was that Buffy could never have a good birthday, or really, a good any holiday. Every holiday episode something catastrophic would happen that would seem to completley ruin any possibility of celebrating--but in the end, she would celebrate anyhow.

In Zero To Murder... I got a little bit worried because of the strawberry...lol

But looks like it's back to normal, green shirt with pineapples all over it (BTW those shirts really did look like they've been taken right out of Mr. Furley's closet...lol biggrin.gif)

You know I started to think that the strawberry thing was just an ad lib from James. Cause listening to all the commentaries its clear that any chance James gets to ad lib he's doing it, I dunno that's just what I think.
Olena
Yeah, I know what you mean. I still haven't listened to all of the commentaries, but still it's truly amazing that so many great moments were actually improvisations or ad libs from James... so you may be right.

Hopefully we'll find out when the second season comes out on DVD biggrin.gif

Yesterday I went to the grocery store and the first thing I saw when I went in was a huge display of pineapples.

I didn't think, "Pineapple might be yummy right now," I thought, "I can't forget to watch Psych tonight!"

LOL!!! biggrin.gif

Yeah, James is a really talented actor and his comedic timing and adlibbing just make him even more appealing.

I was shopping with my sister the one night and we were in the produce section and they had a load of pineapples. So they catch my eye and I just scream "PINEAPPLES!" My sister knew why I was so excited, but I'm not sure I want to know what the other individuals around me thought. laugh.gif
PsychedOut
I've always loved pinapples, but having Shawn love them too makes them ever better!

LOL! I think it's the same for all of us, whenever I see a pineapple I just smile and think: Oh, look, pineapples... Shawn... biggrin.gif And suddenly I'm baking pineapple upside down cakes and I even have a can of sliced pineapple in my fridge biggrin.gif I will definately name my next canary Ananas (which is "pineapple" in my language biggrin.gif)
