Indeed, this episode and whole season is going to rock.

Everytime I watch the clip of James and Dulé singing 'Shout' on YouTube, I'm literally crying over here.

Hi Bubba here, what did you think about the season premiere? I thought it ws ery funny. laugh.gif
CityOfAngels
I enjoyed season one and immediately purchased the DVD set when it finally came out. I was looking forward to Season Two until I saw a taste of what is to come. The Season Two Premiere is a far cry from the first season. It is as if a few big wigs at the USA Network forced the team to take a complete 180. The first season was great. Every piece just came together and was unique. I was surprised to see James Roday and Dulé Hill's characters toned down. The spark was missing and chemistry was way off. The comic timing and the excellent Psych theme music was missing from most of the premiere episode. Steve Franks and the rest of the excellent producers and writers of the show should have had more control over this episode.

Note:
  • Tim Curry as always was at his best.
  • The overall idea was a great setup for what could have been one of the best episodes. The edit was to tight and the entire show was lacking what is by far some of the best theme music on USA.
I guess I was expecting much more from the same director and writing duo from Scary Sherry: Bianca's Toast episode. I am hopeful for the rest of the season because I think the magic is still there somewhere. Don't hold James and Dulé back. Let them express themselves with their characters just like they did in season one with the same directors, music and writers. You guys still rock but then again I am still psyched from watching the first season DVD set. Best of luck from James Roday home town of San Antonio. I hope to see the sparkle come back in future episodes.

Could someone please tell me who played the part of the other male judge Zapato in the season 2 premiere American Duos this week? I think I've seen him before but his name wasn't listed anywhere that I could find.

I loved this show tonight. It was awesome and the guys singing Shout was so cool! I was cracking up and my husband was asleep in his chair and I woke him. lol poor guy spent 10 hours at work.
I hope someone can let me know who that guy was that played the other judge though.
thanks in advance!

I enjoyed the premiere, I thought it was great. It was odd watching a new episode of Psych to tell you the truth cause I've just been watching the first season over and over again. So it was like, 'Hey, new episodes!' Then I jumped up and down like Shawn and Gus cause it finally hit me that new episodes were here. It was great though, I think Steve and James should write toghter more often. This was a really good season open and I cannot wait for the rest. And from what the producers say in their new plethora of interviews on the site, there's some good things in store for us and quite possibly seven seasons. I did indeed jump up and down after hearing that as well.

Season One was great. I really loved the show but sometimes worried that it had issues finding its footing. The S2 premiere last night erased all my fears. I thought the writing was so sharp and even better than last year, Gus really seemed to be enjoying himself now but still working as Shaun's foil. Plus, it seems like they toned down the really zany stuff just a touch so it felt less jarring when a new clue was being introduced. Don't get me wrong. I love the zany. But I thought Juilet's freak-out over the coreography was far funnier than seeing Shaun convulse on the floor again. My husband and I loved the first season but agreed that last night may be one of the best episodes ever. My sides still hurt from all the laughing. Awesome job!

The episode made me smile a lot, but no big laughs. But then again, the returning episode in January wasn't great either. It seems to me like they have to have time to warm up.... so I'm sure the episodes will get better smile.gif I liked when Shawn and Gus were sticking close to the wall, trying not to be noticed (corny, but funny), and Juliet helping them and then getting a little too excited about it. Anyway, good episode. It looks like next weeks will be back to normal (maybe) smile.gif

I feel like I watched a different show than the rest of the people on this message board. Successful tv shows like Cheers, Fraiser, Baretta, Rockford Files, The Night Stalker and Moonlighting, stuck to a tried an true formula. You looked forward every week to watching these shows because you knew what to expect from the interaction between the characters. I know this is hard to say, but I felt like I had just watched the second and fourth season of Monk. The second season they changed the shows theme music and the fourth season they made a TV cardinal sin by allowing Sharona "Bitty Schram" to leave the show. It was all down hill from there.

I heard all of the commentary on the 1st season DVD and I hope that the shows producers read this message. Do a quick shuffle of the shows to pull in the best of season two as soon as possible or you could potentially loose first time watchers, because they won't understand what all the hype was about. I had bragged to a number of co-workers at the water cooler about this show and how they should catch the new season. Maybe I should have held off until a few more shows had passed.

I just caught a glimpse of the highlights of next weeks show. It looked as though James had just returned from a funeral and was forced to act. Just like with the second season premiere he was very reserved, and all to serious looking. It was like the comedy life was sucked from him and I was waiting for him to break into some serious drama acting. The show is at its best when James and Dulé are behaving like teenagers that have succeeded at something to their amazement and have the urge to jump up and down ending with the knuckle tap.

tongue.gif Ok I am off the soap box. I don't get to watch as much TV as I did when I was younger. So I cherish the moments when I come across a very good show like Psych that has a lot of potential to be a great show that will be around for a long time that I will look forward to watching each season. Please don't let it become another NCIS that was hot the first couple of seasons and then they killed off Sasha Alexander's character and everything went down hill from there. unsure.gif

Apparently, CityofAngels and I watched completly opposite show. Although the episode didn't lol, it did make me smile and if you listen to any of the commentaries on the dvd, that is what Steve Franks hopes he accomplishes with this show. This episode which was written by Steve and James Roday and directed by John Landis is lighter than Scarry Sherry; Bianca Toast, which was dark for the series. Tim Curry rocks. Gina Gershon was hilarious. Her scenes with Lassiter were great. Dulé channel Michael Jackson in his moonwalk. CityofAngels may have not like it; but I did.

I thought this was one of the funniest episodes of Psych and possibly of any show, ever. The scene at Henry's house where he and Tim Curry were fighting about the robe and Shawn and Gus were fighting about the corn pretty much had me in tears, I was laughing so hard. The stoned Paula Abdul character was hilarious, too, especially when Lassie was interrogating her. The interactions between Gus and Shawn were also great. I agree with Pixiegirl1003: it seems like Dulé is getting more comfortable with the role, because I felt like there was a lot of chemistry between his and James' characters onscreen. The only thing I thought could have been improved was explaining the Llewellyn kid's motivations for the murder more; it kind of seemed to come out of nowhere. Beyond that, though, I thought it was a great ep.

I enjoyed the show. Maybe James seemed a little toned down but that was quickly swept away when him and Dulé were fighting over corn, which was one of my favorite parts of the episode. There's like I said in my previous reply a plethora of new production interviews. And they address the development of the characters. So maybe some stuff appeared different to certain individuals, but this is a new season, with different and better and bigger ideas than before. And after viewing those interviews I absolutely cannot wait for this season. It's gonna be awesome.

First time to the board but wanted to add my 2 cents for whoever is reading. I loved the first season. This show seemed different but it still made me laugh.

Gina Gershon is one of the sexiest women on the planet. Hated when Snoops got pulled.

The new music has to go.

I have to say CityOfAngels said it pretty well. This show lacked the pace and timing of season one. I did not enjoy it nearly as much and I had just run through the previous season over the last week on DVD, so they were fresh in my mind.

The major problem I saw was this was this first time they had a guest star and ( however good Tim Curry may be) putting him in every scene was a mistake. He was even in a scene with just he and Buzz for crying out loud.

I watch the show for the characters and I hope they don't change the show to cater to the guest stars, instead of continuing to develop the great characters they started with.

I thought Tim Curry brought a lot extra to the show, and as a casual American Idol fan, the play on the "character" of Simon Cowell was particularly enjoyable. I thought that the show was a little different (like someone said previously, not as dark as Scary Sherry) but excellent non-the-less. We had a similar debate going on the Monk boards about the Monk premiere. Some were complaining because Monk doesn't follow a strict formula where the episodes are structured the same each week. Others agree with me, that the show is boring that way. I like the variation in plot structure, characters, and guest stars. I hope the writers keep up the good work, keep me guessing, but more importantly, keep me entertained!! If you didn't llaugh out loud (or at least smile and enjoy) during Juliet's "krumping", Lassiter's encounters with Emilina or whatever the Paula Abdul-like character's name was, Henry's fight about the robe, and the Shawn/Gus singing and dancing performance at the end....I don't think it's because the writing is bad. Maybe this just isn't the show for you. Just my two cents.

I thought Tim Curry brought...

I completely agree. I thought that not only was this Psych episode great, but also the Monk episode as well. I think that some of those people who watch Psych or Monk and say things like that might be a little too serious about the show. I loved the Monk episode's variations and, although my favorite Psych of all time was Scary Sherry (Bianca!! ><), I really enjoyed American Duos, just as I do all the other Psych episodes. Tim Curry was amazing, as usual, as well as everyone else on the cast, Maggie to boost. I counted down the days, and then the hours, until 9:00 for Monk, and 10:00 for Psych, and I'm glad I did.

Why can't we all just be angelbabies swaddled in a cacoon of cloud candy?

This episode was awesome.

I don't usually do message boards, but I had to share my thoughts...the "American Idol" takoff was one of the funniest episodes of ANYTHING I have seen on TV lately. "Psych" just seems to get better with every episode, but this one was beyond belief to me. Everyone was excellent, and even the camera shots added to the hilarity. I was laughing out loud. I've seen it 3 1/2 times, and plan to DVR it as soon as I find it again. I hope they keep up the good work!

Welcome to the forum. smile.gif I agree, it was a funny episode.

Hi, welcome! I also really thought the comparisons to AI were hysterical and they did an excellent job with the guest stars. Hope you stick around cool.gif .

I am totally with CityofAngels on this one.

Actually, I am probably even more critical of it.

Honestly, I thought this ep was the worst of the bunch.

Everyone
tried to be funny. Jules. Lassie. The Chief.

As a result... No one was funny.

Ok... I think the Jules/Shawn angle should be killed. No one did it better than Moonlighting or X-Files, and everyone else should just give up that ghost. Shawn was funnier as a womanizer. Personally, I think it's funnier if Shawn flirts with Jules but she scorns his advances... but he still needs to make plays for other women to keep things fun!

I didn't laugh out loud once during this ep... a huge downer for me. Seems like some chemistry was missing from the Shawn/Gus relationship.

Most importantly though: Every person does not have to be funny. Snappy quips and one-liners are not for everyone! Leave them for Shawn and Gus (and maybe Jules and Lassie every once in a while) instead of trying to make every character funny every single line of the show.

I totally don't want this to turn into one of those shows I watch for one season only. Please... bring back the real humor and stop trying to force it when it's not necessary!

What?! I LOVE THE SEASON PREMIERE!! It is so funny. Even my husband, who hates corny stuff, says he loves it. I laughed out loud so many times and I usually never find stuff funny on television. The banter was just awesome. Tim Curry was absolutely hilarious. I love the look on his face after he found out the tuna nicoise sandwich was poisoned! And his putdowns were just too much! I just really didn't find it out of place compared to the first season episodes.

So I take it that noone else noticed that they reuseed the actor that played one of the 2 con men from season 1 to play one of the two cowboy singers in the American Duos episode.
I think his name is Ben Cotten..
Don't they do background checks at shows like that to see if you are a bank robber released from prison like a year ago.. and don't you think Shaun's super memory would have caught that face. Or at least.. made some quip about dejavu or something and look at the camera.. you know to test whether or not the audience noticed..
I read through all of the post about the 1st episode of season 2 and noone noticed it.. i guess you would have to be a true fan to catch something like that.
Or maybe thats just my oppinion.. I would personally love to be immortalized in an episode of Psych as like Shaun's cousin or something.
Anyways LOVE the show.. PsychOuts always funny.. they should do more singing bits.. those were priceless.. or do some spiffs on other shows like he comes out dressed like Monk and does a quick case or he has a joke like hes John Smith.

Well, I think its fair to say that most of the people here are "true fans" and we all notice different things at different times. That's what's so cool about the Internet age--we can talk about this stuff online and go back and say, oh wow, that's something I wouldn't have seen on my own. wink.gif I don't know what other shows you watch, but from what I've seen it's pretty common to reuse actors in different roles. For example, I remember in Law and Order SVU, the actress Diane Neal (who has been on SVU for a while now) had a role as Amelia Chase (who turned out to be a rapist) before her role as the ADA. They definitely were the same actress, but completely different, unrelated charaters. They probably didn't draw attention to the reuse of the actor in Psych because its a common occurance in TV, and they expect viewers to either not notice (like me) or excuse it. It is fiction after all.
PineappleTastic
I loved the premier episode. Being a regular American Idol watcher, I loved how they casted it.
And the very beginning reminded me of how my mother talks to me when I'm either watching Psych, Heroes, or American Idol (Speaking of that.).
Me being Gus, of course.

The part where they were up against the wall was hilarious;
My stomach still hurt about two hours later.

I see what some of the people commenting mean, though.
It was a bit rushed, and lacked detail in some spots.

But overall, I loved it.
It still hasn't beaten my favorites, which are The Spelling Bee and The Comic-Con ones.

Oh, and the guy that was supposed to be Ryan Seacrest.
I think he was in The Spelling Bee episode?
But he was from season 1. I wasn't sure if anyone else noticed that yet.
