I absolutely loved the first episode! I will definitely tune in every Thursday!

I thought it was cute. There were a few moments that were maybe a little cheesy or over the top but not too much--typical pilot problems. I think the rest of the series will be better after the actors figure out their comfort level with the characters. I don't know if you will like Debra any better if you didn't like her as Grace. It's pretty much the older version of the neurotic Grace without Will.

Just finished the first episode - I'm a very picky viewer, I usually don't like any sitcom that doesn't have good writing. I thought this would be cheesy, and it says something that I felt the need to immediately write in, but I wanted to because I was really, really impressed. The pilot came across fresh and felt like a great mid-week "let me forget the office pressure over a glass of merlot and my favorite show" feel. It's great escapism- wonderful writing, compelling characters and spot-on stereotypes to have fun with. Messing is always fresh and likeable. I like the supporting cast- no one is lame or obtrusive. Joe Mantegna is a gem- he has that je ne ses quoi and his chemistry is great with Messing - I certainly hope he hasn't drowned!

LOVE the plot of the woman being held captive at the shrinks! Judy Davis is one of my favorite actresses, and I can't wait to see what you do with her - more, more on that!

I'm sure there will be plenty of Sex & the City comparisions, but truthfully, I've not seen a TV cast this strong that holds talent even through the supporting cast since West Wing. The ensemble proved itself - I'm sure there will be a lot of household names generated from this series. I just hope the writing stays strong. Keep up the excellent work, and I'll stay tuned in!

I really enjoyed it and wish it WAS a real series - instead of just a 'mini-series' with only 4 more episodes.

I thought it started a little slow - setting up the backgrounds - but by 1/2 way through I really was into it. I can't wait for next episode....was bummed Lou walked into the ocean tho. That letter he was writing.... and set the bottle down on ..... must've blown away if the police are looking for him????

OMG!!! This has to be the best show on TV!!! Debra was awesome. It really hit home for me. I'll be here every week. I do believe this show is so perfect for women over 40yrs. Like myself. There IS life after 40 and after seperation or divorce!!

I won't spoil the plot for everyone (although I just spent the last 4hrs watching the entire series on the USA network.com website) but as for the premiere, I loved it. I noticed posts on the board concerning interest over the constant airing of the promos, but honestly, it only made me more interested to see it. I'm glad I did. I enjoyed it. I hope it gets released on dvd.

I gave it over an hour trying to see if it might improve but couldn't take any more of it. Worst new summer series I have ever seen.

You have more patience than I do - to watch it all online......my friend left the show at the birthday party with the Chinese dragon and didn't like it - she left too early I think. Talked her into watching the 2nd hour this Saturday...

I loved The Starter Wife. Listen, who sings that song that's played during the premiere advertisement. She sings, make a wish, take a chance, you can sail away (I think!)?

Yeah. What about that Cricket? The way her husband "made" her all but drop her friendship with Molly.

Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway

"I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
Well I won't forget all the ones that I loved
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway"

Hi Bubba here, what did you guys think about the premiere of The Starter Wife? Was it good or was it bad?
I read a great recap of the premier - now i want to watch it! (see below)

The Unexpected Intrigue (And Totally Expected Banality) Of 'The Starter Wife'
Unless you've been living in a cave, there has been no safe place from the unrelenting promos for USA Network miniseries The Starter Wife (brought to you by Ponds! In case you haven't heard!). And, just as we read the tabs so you don't have to, we watched all two hours of last night's premiere installment of this highly confused concoction. Here's our take: Despite the utter banality of the show (and its tie-in website, which has message boards structured for real divorcees to share their stories), there's something weirdly appealing about The Starter Wife's characters, whose problems are repressed with help from so much booze and sex that we feel like teetotaling virgins in comparison. Anyway, after the jump, our helpful recap and character summary for those who didn't tune in.

Molly Kagan (Debra Messing): Molly was a poor girl who had bushy eyebrows and bad hair until she met now-ex Kenny Kagan. He taught her about sushi and next thing you know, the girl was in love. Flash forward to the present, and Molly is a poor, impeccably-groomed 40-something with a young daughter, a husband who dumped her, and an existential crisis to deal with. Every 15 minutes or so, Molly makes a comment about what good hair she has and how fat she's getting... and we struggle to empathize.

Kenny Kagan (Peter Jacobson): He's the ex. He's a creep. He don't really get why Molly ever married him to begin with, other than the whole sushi-lesson thing. The movie opens with him calling Molly from the treadmill and asking her to pick up dog crap. No, really. Also, he kinda looks like Jon Lovitz.

Joan McAllister (the brilliant Judy Davis): Joan is Molly's friend. She is a WASP. She has a much older husband. She is a drunk. We suspect she's also a drag queen.

Cricket Stewart (Miranda Otto): Cricket is also a friend of Molly, only, after Molly gets dumped, Cricket's husband says the two can't be friends. Then the husband sleeps with the nanny.

Lavender (Anika Noni Rose): Lavender is the security guard [Of course she is! She's black! -Ed.] in the gated Malibu community where Molly has fled post-split. Lavender is working to put herself through UCLA, just as Molly once had. She is also supposedly from the "wrong side of the tracks. [Of course she is! She's black! -Ed.]

Rodney (Chris Diamantopoulos): Rodney is Molly's friend and her interior decorator. Not surprisingly, he is also gay.

So what happened during the long-winded 2-hour premiere? Molly weighed herself. A lot. Her husband dumped her. She fled to Malibu. She started liking her ex-husband's boss. She started liking a mean dude she spied on the beach who was, in addition to being mean, really, really secretive. Her friends were strangely absent. Molly made fun of them. And then, in the last 30 seconds of the premiere -- spoiler alert! -- the ex's boss stood Molly up on a date to... commit suicide. (We think.) Yeah, we were shocked and awed too. So much so that, sadly, we'll be tuning in next Thursday to continue to figure out this dirty, drunken mess.

I watched the premiere on Thursday night, and it lost my attention. Tried again yesterday and again this morning to watch the whole episode, but I have to say that it doesn't interest me. I don't really care what happens to Molly and none of the other characters hold my interest either. Sorry!

I must admit that I never watched Will and Grace. I never knew Debra could be so funny. What bothers me about this show and society is that if a woman devotes her entire life to her husband and his goals. If that union ends, the woman is left feeling useless and lost. Didn't she have a life before she met and married him? Not much of a life, 1 book published right? Yet she is feeling asking herself, what am I to do? She also has all the experience running her husbands life she could be someones assistant. I am sure she finds her way by the end of the series.

I have to say, I did enjoy the show. Wasnt really expecting too, and now I have to watch every Thursday, and if Im gone on Thursday, then hope USA puts it on reruns during the week! I hope to find out what happened to the guy who walked in to the Ocean, and what his letter says...... Thanks for a nice show, about something different!

Joe Montegna played 'Lou'.... he was my favorite character....the wind was blowing so hard when he walked into ocean I bet it blew the letter away.... or else why would police be asking Molly next week about 'a man has been missing for a week, what do you know about it'???

Love the show!

Ok I really wasnt going to watch it - not my style!
I started with DEsparate house wife and that was too over the top for me!

NOTHIN else was on today, so I turned it on.
Then left it on for the second show to see moments I missed.
Then turned music on for an hour.
Then went back to the show for the last hour.
It has been palying ever since!
The same damm 2 hours over and over - un-be-lieve-able!

I most love the interaction and inuendo between Molly and Lon!
He better not be gone for good. Dont mind the fling with the younger guy but you know what? Older folk can be pretty damm sexy too and I want more MolLon!
I LOVE that USA has got this really cool "character" niche and has so many great shows with older people. The Senior population is comin into its own!!!

This was the one new program I was NOT gonna watch from USA having already locked in to Monk, Psych,4400, Dead Zone and the time out over at Sci fi!
Now I can see my whole summer will be over at USA with an hour for Kyle XY and some coffee breaks at Scifi for the Gates and Dr Who!

I really enjoyed the first episode and will definitely tune in for more. I like Debra Messing and adore Joe Montegna. I hope he's not missing for good. I think they had great chemistry, and Sam was no chump either. If the series is a total of four hours and we just saw the first two hours, that means the remaining four episodes are 1/2 hour each. That's too bad, I really don't care for sitcoms. I would rather sit and enjoy an hour long "dramedy". It is just the beginning, so there's no telling what this show could morph into, but for now I'll watch and enjoy.

It will be an hour on Thursday. According to the schedule they will show the 2-hour premier again at 5 pm on the 7th and then it lists "The Starter Wife" - Hour 3. I don't know if these are Eastern time or not.

I think 'Burn Notice' looks like a good show too - I may watch it also this summer.

I loved it! I read the book and was excited to see how the mini-series would turn out. So far, so good. I like the different plot twists from the book which were necessary to make it into the mini-series. Very well done! Thanks!

I liked the premiere, they were able to hold my attention. Let us hope that they can continue to grab my attention.

I liked The Starter Wife but it was a little too long if you ask me. I will probibly watch it Thursday.

I thought it was great! I really like Molly's character. I think it's a good show, or going to be a really good show, because she's an interesting character in the way that she's not a typical Hollywood wife, nor is she set up to be someone who's totally unfamiliar with all the aspects of Hollywood, though she was before she got married. She doesn't really care about all the nonsense and gossip, but she isn't totally separated from in. So, in a sense, as some people have said, it's a bit like Sex and the City: the focus on a woman who has great fashion sense and knows what's in, etc but who is human when it comes to having flaws, relationship troubles, etc.

I think it's different enough from Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives to still be a very successful show.

It was alright. I won't make any major plans and miss anything to stay home and watch it. Between the 1,000's of commercials it ran and then the all day ridiculous marathon for 1 epesode, I have about had all I want of it. Its to bad too. I like Debra just sick of the show already and it has barely gotten started.

I loved the premiere, loved Debra Messing, hope Joe Montegna is not gone from the series. PLEASE do not make the mistake of forgetting that we want to be entertained. I feel the sad portions were not overdone, attitude and laughs well done. THANKS.

I loved The Starter Wife. I was looking so forward to watching that show that I had it marked on my calendar so that I wouldn't forget. Debra Messing was AWESOME in this new show! As for as Joe Montegna, I hope that he's not off the show the very first night. I like looking at him! And I also think that he adds a lot to the show in being well defined, wealthy, and as an older, sexy man. I hope this turns out to be a huge success!!!! I'll be in front of my tv every Thursday night @ 9:00PM.
HopefulGirl07
I loved the Starter Wife my husband even liked it! blink.gif I want to read the book now.

I tuned in eagerly because Debra Messing is the new I Love Lucy and Joe Montegna is a brilliant actor. I couldn't watch the whole thing. One hour later and I was horrified by the script--not funny at all--the editing was atrocious, some scenes were waaaay too long (where she puts the boat in the water with the horrid voice-over noises) and was it supposed to be funny that she and her daughter were sitting in the waiting room of the restaurant club wearing their snorkle masks? Not!
The guy on the beach who rescues her was the biggest most obvious fake I've ever seen--the perfect stereotype of a "Hollywood actor". Perhaps he was supposed to be? Then he was way over the top with his acting.
The child playing the daughter was a very poor actress. She seemed too old.
And Debra would go through these amazing transitions and facial expressions with absolutely no motivation. One moment she was timid and sort of sad and suddenly she breaks into a glowing sparkling smile--completely out of character. Almost as though she was much too smart to be used and discarded by that creepy little husband. I found it hard to believe.
I can hardly even comment on the underwater dream/drowning sequence. It was jarringly out of place.
I still love those two actors, Debra and Joe, but please, please--they need more help!

I will not be subjugated to watching it this week. Yeah me! I have choir practice LOL! or something like that. Watching Debra Messing is like watching paint dry. JMHO! Like Will and Grace the characters around her are far more interesting.

Pretty cool. Debra is the real deal.
