We've need this for a while now, so at the request of a user, I finally got around to putting it together. These suggestions are loosely based on some probelems we've faced, some solutions we've come up with and some pet-peeves we've discussed. Please don't take this as me being bossy, but as a good set of guidelines to follow that will hopefully erase any problems we might run into. I'de like you guys to give me your opinion on these. Add, take away, whatever. Let's try to make the board a more organized place. smile.gif

1.Duplicate threads- Don't start them! If there is already a thread for what you want to discuss, go to that thread. Don't make a whole new thread please, because this will make the board crowded and messy. No one likes a board where there are too many threads.
--Also, please don't start a new thread to tell us that your dog lost a tooth. If you have something minor to say, see if you can find a place for it before you start a new thread.
--When in doubt, use the off topic thread for your discussion. Think about what you want to say. For example, it's fine if you want to start a new thread for discussion of a particular season, but it'de be best if you held back on a new thread for the latest tv schedule change.

2.Computer lingo- Many users have stated their dislike of seeing it. No, this doesn't mean you can never use "lol". It's fine to use some computer lingo in your posts. But just not this- r u going 2 that gr8 show@ princton.i am.
Try to keep your posts readable. We don't want to spend hours translating.

3.Other boards- Lets adopt the Vagas slogan....whatever happens on other boards stays there.

4.Board wars- Of course arguments are going to come, but when you do have an argument, please keep it between yourself and whoever it is you're argueing with. You don't need a third party in the fight. This board is meant to be a fun place, so lets at least try to get along. And if some one gets in a fight, lets remember it's their fight.....you don't need to get involved. If everyone jumps in on a fight the whole board can fall to pieces. Now, if your buddy is the victim of what I like to call a newbie hit-and-run, someone gets an account just to start a fight, it's fine to stick up for them. But remember, admin is here for a reason. Don't let things get out of hand.
If you have major beef with someone, I mean, if you have somthing nasty that you just have to say to them, please, use your private messanger. That way no one else is drawn in, no one is embarrassed in front of their friends, and no one gets a bad reputation.

5.Capital letters and strange font and color- First of all capital letters are considered screaming, so don't write your whole post in them (Unless you're upset). Secondly, if you use too big or small font, it may be hard for other users to read what you wrote. The same goes for light colored lettering, it's hard to see.
This does not mean you aren't allowed to be creative and decorate your posts, go ahead and make them fancy if your want to, just be cosiencious of other reader's eyes.

6.Off-topic- Yes, we're all guilty of going off topic at least once (some more guilty then others!), but, we have an off-topic thread, so lets try to use it. If you find yourself going off-topic, jump over to the off-topic thread and continue your conversation there.

7.Marketing threads- Just ignore them and admin will take them down. Pming admin to make him aware of these kind of posts would also be a good idea.

I'll add some more later. Tell me what you guys think.

Hi Bubba here, good points yf. Nice post.

Thanks Bman, lets see what everyone else thinks.

Thank you, YF! This helps me out a lot. I want to be a part of a fun, decent message board, not a yelling match as I've seen on some. Hope I can be an asset to this board.

You're welcome laurengoren, I'm sure you'll be an asset to the board!

Dispite a few small spats, we've always gotten along pretty well here.

Great idea, yf! If I can think of anything else, I will definitely add to it. I know with my OCD it is always good to have an organized, sane board to go to! Hopefully we can all abide by these standards and keep this place fun and welcoming.

Can signature pics be a little more subtle, not too large, too many or take up a page of the screen. My personal opinion, no offence intended. smile.gif
yankeesfan
We aren't allowed to have large sigs anyway. I remember not too long ago I put up a sig that was rather large so admin made me take it down. If some one does have a large sig, they aren't supposed to.

Newbie Rules:

To ensure a fun board atmosphere, if you are a "Newbie" it might be a good idea to keep these pointers in mind. smile.gif

1.Your just read something that you find offensive.

Have an open mind- Sometimes board members make the mistake of feeling too comfortable with a newbie, before getting to know them. They might make a comment or joke that you find offensive.....but, it really wasn't meant to be taken that way.

Think before you act-Instead of publicly questioning their manners, send them a pm asking them to claify what they meant. Don't tell them that you think they are a mean person, espesially not in front of their friends, who will stick up for them. The best thing you can do is pm them asking them what they meant by their comment. Don't calm and patient in your pm, making sure you have a humble attitude in your pm.

Most of the time a board member will explain their comment and the whole thing will turn out to be a misunderstanding.

You are the new one- Before you jump head-first into an argument, keep in mind that the board is just like real life-- people will usually side with their friends.

When newbies start arguments, they are no longer considered newbies, they are considered trolls. (click on the word if you don't know what that means.

Good post YF!

Wellllll, learn something new every day...never knew what a troll was (except for the story of Billy Goats Gruff....at least that's what I think the story is). Oooops, my age is slipping er, I mean showing! rolleyes.gif

All good suggestions have been posted, based on common sense and respect for other board members.

This is just me, but I'm not a big fan of over-quoting, especially when the quote is very long and/or the post being quoted immediately precedes the reply. IMO it takes up too much room, and I tend to just scroll down and read the reply rather than dealing with re-reading the entire quote. But, that's just me. If everyone else doesn't mind, I'll be OK with it. smile.gif

The suggestions about how members should behave toward one another are much more important. Again, it's a matter of common sense and respect, and not jumping to conclusions. On the Internet, when we can't see the person "talking" it's hard sometimes to figure out the person's intent or meaning. That's why it's best to give the other person the benefit of the doubt, and clarify via PM to avoid misunderstandings.

We're all fans of VDO and LOCI here, so at least we have that in common. biggrin.gif

Having been on boards where newbies are treated like crap, I would like to clarify something. There are no newbies here. Everyone here is a member who is welcome to register their opinions and jump into any discussion. For all members, there is a right way and wrong way to do this and I'm sure if everyone uses their good senses there won't be any problems.

Good rule choc, I'll addthat one to the original list.

rolleyes.gif GUILTY! lol But VERY well put you guys. I don't think that we should treat ppl worse or more rude just b/c they're newer than others. IF and only if you're ganna say something not exactly best-friend-ish, at least have something to base it on other than them being new. I know that i would appriciate the benifit of the doubt if i was new and said something controversal....

Just something to think about....

When I'm replying to a post, especially if it's long, I need to have it in front of me in order to know what I'm answering. Hence, I do tend to have the quote above my post. Also, sometimes my replies may not make sense unless the quote is there. I hear what you're saying and maybe we can work on deleting the part of the quote that we aren't replying to so that it isn't as long.

The Core Rules of Netiquette
Fabi
If you dont like the board, dont leave some dumb a$$ post. Just find another that suits your needs.
No guilt necessary. dry.gif

Good rule Fabi! laugh.gif

There are people who can get along with other people and feel fine about themselves, and there are those that need to make a big stink and bash other board members to get attention.
yankeesfan
I have a question for everyone.

In the word association game aren't we supposed to reply to whoever came up with a word first?
For example- Bob answers the last word with his new word "ham". Then, Betty answers with her word "smoked"...bubt one minute later Frank decides that he wants to reply to Bob's word instead of betty's so he takes Bob's "ham" and answers with "turkey".

When Pam decides to make an answer isn't she supposed to use Betty's "smoked" becasue she answered before Frank?

That's the way we've always played and so I'm just wondering if everyone want to change the rules so that people can answer to whatever word they want to....because that's the way it's been going lately. Just wondering.

Your feedback would be helpful so I can understand how the tides are currently rolling.
yankeesfan
We've always played it so that you answer to the first reply. If you accidently reply after someone else did that fine, everyone is supposed to just ignore the second post. Or, if you're sorta weird like me, you can delete your "late" post.

Hi Bubba here, I think this would be great to add to the thread.

POSTING PICTURES

It's quite simple if you have a free account at www.photobucket.com , that's the site that most of us use.

1. You will transfer the picture from your computer to the www.photobucket.com account.

2. Once the image is in the www.photobucket.com account,

3. Click on the the bottom line (of the three) below the thumbnail image.

4. Right click and then select copy that...

5. Point at your reply, Right click, select (left click) Paste - that will paste the image information onto the text area of your reply message...

6. The main restriction on posting images is that they are resized to be not larger than 450 pixels wide and this is to help those on the board that have their screens set to a larger image for viewing. (the edit function on www.photobucket.com has a built in resize function.)

I'ver been thinking about some possible rules, but I need toedit them before I add them in. Just giving you all an update.
yankeesfan
The easiest way to find something is to use the forum search features. Using these features, you can search
1)the whole forum
2)the board
3)a thread

To search for something on the forum-
Make sure you are here. At the top of the page next to "calendar", "members", and "help" there is a clickable link titled "search". Use it. (duh)

To search for something on the board-
Go into the board that you want to search, and at the same place where the forum "search" was located, there will be a board "search". Notice the checked box that tells you you are going to search the board only. If you don't see the box you are in the wrong place.

To search for something in a thread-
Go into the thread that you want to search. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll find a box next to a bubble that says "Search Topic". Type in the word(s) that you want to search for.

Note: Any underlined words in this post are links. Click on them.

Yeah, I was the same way elliotfan. We all have to be a newbie once, and it can either be a good or bad experience.

Now, for the next rule.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DO NOT START A THREAD TO ASK AN EPISODE QUESTION!!!!!!!
notice that I am using captal letters. this means that i am screaming.

There is almost nothing a member hates more then when someone clutters up the biard with useless threads. We have a questions thread! Use it!

yf, calm down honey...you're going to have a stroke before you hit twenty. You are not required to police everyone on the board. We all make mistakes, especially those who are new to the "board thing". We might have to repeat ourselves a million times, but eventually everyone will know what to do. Don't send yourself into a tizzy. Getting upset about the little stuff is storm clouds job... laugh.gif

It's a really fun place! biggrin.gif
