Full Version: Jewel Said It All

Here I sit again watching Nashville Star and once again Witney blew it. Jewel told her she sings through her nose alot and not to do that. Well she did do a tad better on that, but she still needs to work on that. She needs to get voice lessons. I don't think she is mature enough for this contest yet. Randy told her wrong when he said for her to sing through her nose. My hope she will be taken off tonight but I hear they will all go through.

I'm with you on that. She did everything opposite of what Jewel advised her to do. Totally nasal. And don't get me wrong, I've always loved Randy and Alabama...but I don't agree with him about the singing through your nose, it does not equal sounding southern or country.

She's a pretty as she can be , but damn I couldn't understand 90% of what she was singing.... huh.gif

I've watched the show once and I'm tired of hearing about her looks, lol. But she is very pretty. And I do think that looks matter in the business(to a certain degree), but the vocals are whats really important, and judging from tonight, she does not have what it takes in that department.

Jewel did say it all. She used the "P" word, I'll call it a peepee.

Mysuggestion to Whitney and all the other singers: get that microphone out from in front of your mouth.
If we can't understand what you're singing, at least maybe we can lip-read.
I couldn't understand a word about what you were singing.
Let us see your lips!!

LMAO. Glad I'm not the only one. The only thing I could understand was "bare white tooshes. LOR", and I looked at my husband quite puzzled about the rest. Coulda been a cutesy song, if I understood it. Unfortunately, I think cutesy is all she's about.

I do not understand what show ya were watching, but none of us hear had a problem understanding the words. I do not agree with the advice that jewel gave her and I do believe that Randy know what he is talking about. As far as the looks, jewel does not need to say anything about people talking about how pretty someone is or giving anyone on advice on what to wear when she comes out wearing something like she just came off the street corner. I do believe she is mature enough fot the competition. I believe that there is just some of ya out there that is jealous that you do not look like whitney. I know that I wish I only looked half as good as she does. So, to sum it up I feel that she has everything it takes to make it in this business, the looks, the personality and the voice. Maybe ya just need a hearing test.

Yeah, we all need a hearing test, and we're all jealous of Whitney. Damn, girl, get a clue, and a hearing test. Yeah, Whitney is hot, good, that's already been covered, but please....Close your eyes, and listen.

Jewel gave Whitney heartfelt good advice, she couldn't have been more right on. It seemed like Whitney tried to control her nasaliness (is that a word? LOL), but, still not enough in my book, there are so many other things she has to work on, like diction and pitch. The song is a good one though, and I stand by what I said in an earlier thread, it could be a hit if someone else sang it.

Were most of you people watching a different show? This girl has a voice, and a good one. I am not even sure who this Jewell is with her advice. I have never even eard of her before, and that song she did last week was terrible. The slight nasal sound in Whitney's voice during certain notes gives her voice an individual sound, a certain unique quiver that makes the voice hers. rolleyes.gif When I hear her sing, she make me feel happy, and thats what music is supposed to do, isn't it............

I agree with tim, that she has a unique sound, and either you like her voice or you don't... I know there are some singers who are considered 'great', and I can't stand their voice

If you're an exclusive country fan, you probably wouldn't have heard of Jewel. But she was absolutely huge in the pop charts about a decade ago. She had a tough life performing on the streets in Mexico at 16, then moved to CA and lived in her car at 19 as she tried to make it in the music business, getting only gigs in coffeehouses but building a cult following. Her first album outsold Nirvana in 1997 who were top of the charts. 2 songs were megahits "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant For Me" which received an incredible amount of airplay at the time. She won 3 grammy awards. She has also written a poetry book which was a bestseller. Some of her songs have been featured in movies, including title songs. Some of the movies were bit hits like Batman & Robin, Life or Something Like It, and Sweet Home Alabama. While I didn't like Jewel's song last week, her range is absolutely out of this world and I've rarely heard singers who could hit notes so perfectly in such a range. I am not a huge fan of hers but I really think that given the hard road she travelled to "make it" and what she has achieved, she is certainly qualified to give an opinion on another singer's voice.

You mean it has been decided by the people who post on this board. That makes up less
than a fraction of one percent of the viewers.

Yes, you are right. Probably about one percent (maybe less), but a one percent that cares enough to get emotionally involved, and that geniunely cares deeply about country music, and who, therefore, are by any reasonable standard a fair representation of country's hardcore fan base. Moreover, I guarantee that Gallup uses far less than one percent for their polls, so one percent is a pretty substantial number in this context. We could be wrong, given the Whitney "machine" that is apparently out there - how else do we explain her remaining and Meg going? Maybe she will stay. But don't pretend it is because she is more talented than Angela, Zac, David, or Josh. She isn't by any reasonable measure - even Anastasia, her chief cheerleader and Nashville "insider" (as they keep repeating year after year to give her erratic opinions credibility),who was ready to declare her the victor after the first show, has finally recognized that Elvis has left the building. Her song was silly and sophomoric, she can't (apparently) actually play an instrument, her vocals are indecipherable, she lacks control, and she has a very limited range. Those would seem to be the facts. I suppose there are those who geniunely disagree, but there are also those who swear that Elvis' best performance was "Clambake," that doesn't make it true.
