I have a question for all board members.....

This is really OT, but where I teach there is a high school (not mine) that will be making random drug testing manditory for all students in the high school...this means that on a certain day when the people who run the drug testing come into the school they can randomly pick students to participate in taking a drug test and the students will not have a choice but to take the test....parents seem to be ok with this testing while the kids are in school....

And before you jump down my throat for "invasion of privacy" it isn't an invasion of privacy....they are in a public school where public tax dollars are paying for that school...if I were to take you from your car or home then that is an invasion of privacy, but while the kids are in school there is no invasion of privacy..

Thanks for the feedback...and opinions on this topic

It sounds like a good thing to do. Testing could save some students' lives I guess. And if someone on drugs is worried about getting caught, maybe they'll stop if they aren't already addicted. And maybe if they do catch someone who's addicted then the can give them the treatment they need and get them off of drugs for good. Even though I know it isn't as simple as that.

i think if the parents are ok with it, then it's a good thing to do. if you're not doing drugs, then you have nothing to worry about taking the test. i just hope the parents are still ok with the testing if one of their kids gets caught. is this just an isolated program, or is it a pilot program, because i think if it works, it should be spread to other schools

as far as invasion of privacy? aren't the parents allowed to legally waive their childs rights?

I will find out more details today, but from what I was told by a parent, they are for it...

I don't see a problem with this as long as parents were informed of the testing and give consent. If this happend in my school I could see alot of kids getting upset wink.gif .

A lot of kids in my school would be upset too. lol.

I think its great though, if the parents agree.

that's sounds like a okay idea but to many kids would get upset if the started doing random drug test... now the parents might be okay with it but it would better if they had the students opinion on what's going on because if they did something like this at my school i know i would be upset and alot of other people would be to

The students really don't have a choice if the school decides to go ahead with this policy...I know they may be upset, but they don't really have a voice...there are several things that students can do, but in the end they have to abide by the school rules...Also, if you are clean then it really shouldn't be a problem...

Don't forget that school is a rite up until you turn 16 then it is a priviledge....

Thanks for your responses...

this wouldn't go over well in my school. Alot of parents would refuse it and the kids would most likely refuse it. a majority of the kids in my school smoke pot (I don't!) or some other kind of drug. A lot drink and others smoke in the bathroom during lunch.

although if the parents consent i guess its okay...

As was said above, only those that are guilty have to worry about anything. Sounds like there will be a lot of worrying in your school.............. wink.gif

As a parent, I don't have a problem with drug testing. However, I'd want to know the results. That's a must. I think that kids who are against testing either don't know the facts about drugs or they're hiding something. What is the penalty for not taking the test? Suspension is just putting the kids on the streets.
IrishEyes
I don't know the penalty...and you are right,.,why suspend a kid and put him on the street where he/she wants to be in the first place...I will find out for you in a few weeks when I talk to the parent again...As a teacher, I am for it too...as long as the Administration comes up with an appropriate punishment for the offender...but then again, we are talking about Administration...
