Is it just me, or has there been no mention of Isabelle having sickle cell anemia since season one where it was used to "identify" Richard being Isabelle's father. Do you think it will be of some other signifigance or even be brought up again? Was it just a way to figure out about Richard or what? I'd like to hear what you guys have to say!

Isabelle doesn't have sickle cell anemia, Lily. She has the sickle cell gene-a person has to have both genes to actually have the disease. The theory is that the sickle cell gene evolved in places in Africa where there is a lot of malaria-when the person is infected, the red blood cells sickle and there is a greater rate of survival. I don't really understand how it works that the sickle cells help a person survive malaria-the biology teacher covers it every year, but that was six months ago last year, and she hasn't got to it yet this year, and it didn't dwell in my head.
Anyway, I don't think the sickle cell storyline has any significance other than identifying Richard as Isabelle's father-I doubt it will ever come up again.

Right. Thank you for clarifying that for me! Sickle cell was brought up in my biology class and it came to mind. Thanks!

The Sickle Cell storyline was totally stupid! Sickle Cell disorder is not just an “African” heritage disease. It can also be found in people of Mediterranean, Indian, and Middle Eastern heritage.
The PFTF can keep people without aging and bring them back in a ball of light; give extraordinary powers to them; bring Jordan back from the dead and etc. BUT they don’t have a cure for Sickle Cell in the future. WTF????
Plus, Richard wasn’t the only Black/African descendant returned. The first scene after they’re returned in the ball of light. There were a lot of people of color. (I’ll have to find a pic of that scene).
Why couldn’t they just check to see if Isabelle’s DNA matched Richard’s instead of the stupid Sickle Cell storyline. They had to draw the Amniotic Fluid from Lily to find out Baby Isabelle had the Sickle Cell trait. (what about the DNA test to find out who the daddy is?)
Maybe Gary Navarro is her daddy…..lol or some dude from the future. Because I never saw a scene about a DNA test, that Richard was her father.

Well, Tay-Sachs is not just a disease found in people of Jewish ancestry. Cajuns from Louisiana have just as high a incidence of having a Tay-Sachs baby, but try telling people Cajuns are as much at risk as Jewish people. The fact of the matter is even white people can have sickle cell anemia, but it is overwhelmingly a disease of Africa. I don't see anything to quibble about here-it didn't evolve as a disease, but as a defense mechanism against malaria. Richard carried the sickle cell gene, so they assumed Isabelle must be his daughter because she has that gene too.
I agree with you that a DNA test would make more sense. You'd think if they weren't going to do a DNA test, they would at least explain why-it seems obvious with all the questions about Isabelle to test her DNA. Does anybody remember anything about Isabelle's DNA being tested?

That's the strange thing, they should have at least mention there was a DNA test done on Isabelle. Does Richard have the Sickle Cell Trait? I don't remember them saying.
Obviously the sickle cell thing was done to let all the veiwers know Lyle was pregnant with a half black baby.

Your site is really pretty mavalon. I know if sickle cell would not have affected Isabelle. She can heal herself and probably prevent things like that. That's great. Too bad he rpower isn't real. We could really use it to help people who suffer from this thing.
