My critique of your analysis would be that in both cases, your original post and your amended post, the results would be random and NOT explain why they have very particular abilities.
The logical resultant theory from your analysis would be that they should all, or most, have all the abilities. They don't.
Suddenly using ALL your brain should no more cause an aneurism than suddenly swimming across a swimming pool should cause a heart attack.

I think Kapitalist's theory makes perfect sense. Epileptic seizures are caused by greatly increased brain activity. Petite mal seizures are when the brain actitity is confined to one side of the brain. Grand mal seizures are when the increased electrical activity crosses over to the other side of the brain. A lot of people die of seizures.
As to not getting ALL the abilities-well, don't most people have one thing they're very good at? Like maybe a kid might show an aptitude for drawing and become a painter, or somebody really good with their hands, but the one thing they show a gift for is carpentry.
