EMMY-AWARD WINNER DEBRA MESSING TO STAR IN THE USA NETWORK TELEVISION EVENT BASED ON GIGI LEVANGIE GRAZER NOVEL “THE STARTER WIFE”

LOS ANGELES, CA – August 8, 2006 – Emmy-award winner Debra Messing is set to star in the USA Network six-hour television event based on the New York Times best-selling 2005 novel The Starter Wife (Simon & Schuster) from author Gigi Levangie Grazer (Rescue Me, Maneater), it was announced today by Jeff Wachtel, executive vice president of original programming for USA. THE STARTER WIFE will be executive produced by Grazer and penned by the writing team of Sara Parriott & Josann McGibbon (“Runaway Bride”), who will also serve as executive producers along with Stephanie Davis (“The Caveman’s Valentine”) and Howard Klein (“The Office,” “Carnivale”) from 3 Arts Entertainment. NBC Universal Television Studio is producing. Laurette Hayden, senior vice president of longform programming for USA, will oversee all aspects of the project, which will begin production in Australia in fourth quarter 2006.

"Debra Messing is both a superstar talent and America's sweetheart. Her incredible range and comedic brilliance made her our first and only choice for this role," said Wachtel.

"I am thrilled that the incredibly talented, incredibly versatile Debra Messing is taking on the starring role in THE STARTER WIFE, and I am hoping she will share her wardrobe," said Grazer.

THE STARTER WIFE is a sexy, savvy and wickedly funny tour de force about life after divorce and one woman’s (Messing) quest to redefine herself after years of marriage to a Hollywood studio head. With wit, sassy style and cameos of the rich and famous – and wannabe rich and famous – THE STARTER WIFE tackles the most delicious and dastardly details of a divorce and recovery, Hollywood style, while at the same time being relatable to everyday women.

Messing is best known for her role as interior decorator Grace Adler from “Will & Grace” for which she won the 2003 Emmy and recently earned a 2006 Emmy nomination. Her performance has garnered her four Golden Globe nominations, four Emmy nominations and two American Comedy Award nominations. Messing has also been seen in numerous feature films including “The Wedding Date” opposite Dermot Mulroney, “Along Came Polly” with Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston, Woody Allen’s comedy, “Hollywood Ending,” opposite Woody Allen and Tea Leoni, and “The Mothman Prophecies” opposite Richard Gere. She will soon be seen in “Lucky You” alongside Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, Robert Duvall and “Purple Violets” directed by Edward Burns. Messing was also heard in the animated film “Garfield” and will soon be heard in “Open Season” with Ashton Kutcher and Martin Lawrence.

Grazer worked for eight years developing and writing television shows for legendary network president and producer Fred Silverman. She also wrote the 1998 movie "Stepmom" starring Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon and has been published in numerous periodicals such as Vogue, People Magazine, Glamour and Harper’s Bazaar. Her best sellers, Maneater and Rescue Me, have been optioned by Mandalay Pictures and Fox Searchlight Pictures, respectively. Grazer is currently working on her next novel, a romantic take on high-end divorce set in New York, to be published by Simon and Schuster.

The writing team of Sara Parriott & Josann McGibbon are best known for their penmanship on "Runaway Bride" featuring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. More recently, they have been working on the highly anticipated animated movie event "Rapunzel Unbraided" for Walt Disney Animation for Dick Cook and Michael Eisner. McGibbon and Parriott have worked on "Chicken Little" for Disney and "Frankenweenie" for Tim Burton, and have additionally written for Sandra Bullock, Sid Ganis, Tom Shadyac and Sara Colleton. Parriott & McGibbon also wrote the story for "Three Men and a Little Lady." Currently, Stuart Cornfeld of Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films is in development with their script "Staying Power."

Wow this doesn't seem like USA Network's type of series.. No special gifts. Lol. Well so long as Monk and Psych stay on Friday, we're good!

I am very happy to hear about this. I love Debra Messing and I can only see her as Grace Adler, so it'll be fun to see her develop another character. I am looking foward to this, hopefully it'll knock Psych out to a later time.
anglblue14
I love Debra Messing too. Looking forward to this show.Just hope it doesn't mess with Psychs' schedule.

I'm also excited to hear about this new show. I loved Debra in Will & Grace so this should be a good change for her. She is pretty, funny & a great actress. I really don't want Monk or my other USA shows to go anywhere though.
Lesles92
ooohhh is Debra grace from will and grace?
Nana4
Lesles92, Yep, that's her. She's pretty & funny. Think it will be a fun show!!

Glad that Debra is cast as the lead. She belongs on T.V. Too bad this doesn't become a series!

The commercial for this show makes no sense. The show looks totally lame, even what I've seen at the website. I never watched Will & Grace, so I still don't know who Debra what-her-name is and after seeing the "reviews" for this show, I still don't care. I just don't want Monk, Psych, The Dead Zone or House to go away. The only good thing is that if it is a mini-series, it will only affect the shows I like for one day. I'm sure I'll be doing something far more interesting the day this show comes on......like watching mold grow. blink.gif

I loved Debra in the Wedding Date and think this show will be a hit! I look forward to seeing it!
Can't wait! Best wishes Debra, cast and crew....for a HIT show!

Does anyone know the name of the song (or who sings it) that is played during the commercial?

Hello; I am extremely excited for this show to come on. I'm reading the book right now.
I am a music lyricist, and I wrote a song called "Starter Wife" BEFORE I ever even heard of this show coming. I would like to forward it to be played in the background during the show. It would go perfectly with certain scenes I am certain!
My contact information is joyfulcommunications@hotmail.com.
Thanks!

Hi; thanks for posting a reply. I saw the caseyrivers web site at the bottom of your post, correct?? Anyways, went and checked it out. He did a show in Cedar Falls, IOWA last night? How ironic! Small World! I have a communications company, verbal (training/public speaking) & written (I'm writing my first book & song lyric writing here.) and I was presenting a two-day communications skills program over in Davenport, IA yesterday. I flew home last night; I live in Nebraska.

This series sounds a bit like Courtney Cox's new series Dirt. I don't think this is very USA.
MaggaSkula
this whole show is laughably ironic, because Gigi Levangie Grazer is the younger, newer model to her husband Brian's STARTER WIFE, actress, Corki Grazer when THEY were living at Malibu Colony!!!!

This was circa. 1992 when Paul Mazursky was still married to Sally, Hal Ashby's widow still owned the house next to Tom and Rita, and Woody was still living there.

I guess you can sell anything if you package it well enough...

not at all. these days, with all kinds of media, people need to consider the scource...

I think its wonderful that a show like this is going to air on t.v. I am in my fourties and I know alot of women in their forties that are having a very hard time dealing with being forty and I think this show will be a very positive influence for these women. I am sorry that some women think that this show will be boring they are obviously not in their forties but one day they will be so you may want to watch the show and learn something or better yet help someone else.
40fabulous
I think 40 is only as bad as where you live...here in MN it isn't bad at all...but in LA where I was an actress it could be the kiss of death for dating, job hunting and being an actress! I just wish the USA Network wasn't more expensive to get with my current cable package! wink.gif
