Hi Bubba here, USA has a preview of this week's upcoming episode Mr. Monk, Private Eye on the Monk home page.
USA Network's Monk Page If you haven't seen the AOL preview, click on the following link...
Monk On AOL I will try to find some more previews and maybe some pictures from the episode later. I am in the process of moving so bear with me.

Late last night USA Net was showing clips/previews of "Mr. Monk, Private Eye." As the days go on, there will no doubt be even more and varied little clip previews on USA Net as well... They seem to be in the habit of showing the previews for a show during the airing of another series.

Alex, those were pretty cool! I wonder what program they used to make those? They don't look like the Sims games I have seen but there are some things about them that remind me of them. The people didn't look exactly like the people they were supposed to be, but that is extremely difficult to do and they still did it really well. I think I even saw 'Adrian's' shoulder twitch once or twice, and there was this moment when 'Stottlemeyer' was standing with his arms crossed and his weight on one foot that was a classic Stottlemeyer body language. Thanks for sharing!

I am mildly ocd and would never ever break a pencil the way Monk did tonight. Monk would never use a battery powered pencil sharpener. I remember previous episodes when he sharpened pencils until they were all just alike. If he has changed this much, the writers should give the viewers a reason why.

I thought it could have been a lot better, especially if Monk had fought the guy instead of jumping off the boat. It was kind of lame when the bad guy fell over just because of a small wave. I thought it was funny when Monk went back and touched the flagpole on the boat. Overall, I think this episode was more about the captain than anyone else.

I thought it was one of the better ones this year. Definitely in the upper half of the handful of five.
I liked the dog.
I was pretty impressed by potential chemistry between Leland and the Sharon Lawrence character. I'm vaguely familiar with her name but not her body of work. I thought she was very good at walking the fine line between being "ballsy" and vulnerable/romantic. Of course I liked Karen so I'm a bit hopeful that maybe having a few "dates" will actually be a vehicle for Stott to realize he misses her.
The concept of a correspondence course in swimming was a hoot. My mom is pretty sick and really doesn't like the show as much as she did, but even she laughed at that line!
About the electric pencil sharpener: probably the office was set up by Natalie and Monk was just bored.
I thought it was subtly interesting that Adrian thought more of getting the business card (85 cents) back from the waitress than being bothered that it was bent.
Just my two cents...counterfeit or otherwise...
It's nice to be posting again. I'll do it as my energy allows but with my mom being so sick I feel kind of guilty having fun when I should be elsewhere on the internet trying to research for answers to help her.

I loved the dog too & the chemistry between the captain & the real estate agent. Sharon L. used to be on NYPD Blue. She played the DA & she was great on that.
I loved Monk calling Natalie ...too funny.
Captain Studdlemyer...LOL.
Hey, don't feel guilty about dropping in to post. Everyone needs a break. Having a little fun is not a bad thing. You need to take care of yourself too. I'm sorry that your Mom is so sick. Hope you can stop by more often.

I assumed that his overwhelming desire to annoy Natalie over-rode his heirarchy of things that aren't even.
And an electric shapener would get the pencil much more even than a mechanical sharpener...

My family and I all thought this was one of the weakest epsiodes. (Especially odd after last week's was so good!) A few points:
Grandpa Neville this and Grandpa Neville that. I was with Monk: Let's dig up Grandpa Neville and poke him with sticks. (However, I did like the "Leap and a net will appear" saying.)
The in-your-face realtor. Yick, that woman was beyond annoying. It's one thing to set out to attract a man; it's another thing to drool all over him. I hope to goodness they don't make her a regular. Stottlemeyer can do SO much better.
Plot holes. OF COURSE you'd stand with your back to a suspected murderer you'd just extorted an extra amount of cash from. OF COURSE a murderer would invite further investigation into his affairs from a P.I. by refusing to settle up after a hit and run. Right.
The evil doctor. The man had not one ounce of charm or charisma. You'd have to be truly desperate to go out with that one.
Un-Monk-like elements. What's up with all the hitting and naughty words? Did I accidentally turn the channel to "Romper Room"? I'm not a prude and I don't mind a little profanity, but the constant repetition of "Son of a b----" seemed to be lowering "Monk's" standards somewhat. They don't usually resort to that, which I always thought was pretty classy. And then everyone starts hitting and shoving Monk just because they feel like it? What's that about? Lazy writing, perhaps?
There were some good moments -- Monk and his correspondence course swimming, and a few other things -- but on the whole this one was below average. Oh, well, maybe the next one will be back up to scratch. (As long as they don't bring back Stalker-Realtor!!)
Jerry, I hope your mom feels better soon. I'll be praying for her.
Renee, yes! I so agree with you! I don't care about the profanity, but I just ranted and spent way too much time composing a post for
another board about how much I hated that realtor and why and things that irritated me about this episode. (link included because I'm just not going to go over all of it again) This is the first time I think that I have actively hated an episode of Monk. Before now, there have been episodes I wasn't thrilled about but I wouldn't say I hated them. This one, the stuff that bugged me seemed to far outweigh the stuff that I liked. I really hope this character will not make a return, not unless they at least tone her down.
Edited to add: I did love Psych though. It was much more fun to watch for me tonight than Monk was. Usually I watch Psych in large part because it's on after Monk and my daughter likes it. Last night it waas better, IMO.

Actually, I thought this was a pretty good episode. Stottlemeyer got to shine quite a bit and I think the realtor lady makes a good foil for him. She's brassy and isn't about to let him fall into the pity party. Good match!
Natalie was a bit pushier than she usually is with Monk, and that was a bit annoying, but didn't affect me that much.
The boat scene, however, was great I thought. Monk trying to read the instructions while he was trying not to drown was wonderful. I also loved the scene where he was edging along the sides of the boat, stopped and then edged back to touch the antennae on the sides before going on. Funny!
Overall, I enjoyed it. Then again, I enjoy just about anything Monkish

Wow, I found the one person who loathes Stalker-Realtor even more than I do!
You know, if the situation had been reversed in that last scene with Stott and the broom -- if Stott were a woman and Stalker-Realtor were a man -- no one would have thought of it as cute. It would be seen as creepy and the woman being spied on would be seen as a total idiot for not seeing it that way. (Hello, that's why God invented "Lifetime" movies.)

I am actually a bit surprised and now mildly amused that I feel so strongly about it. I can't think of many ways that she could make me hate her more. If she ate babies and kicked puppies, maybe. And you know, really we don't know that she doesn't

Yeah, seriously! I hope the first thing he does is buy blinds. And get that restraining order. I actually would love to see the episode where Natalie takes him aside and says, "Captain? That's a bit creepy. Actually, a *lot* creepy. As someone who speaks from experience, restraining orders are a very good thing. I have a few of them myself! Hi Alex, Liv and all other Monk fans from all over the world!
This is my first posting here on this board. Hello to all from Austria!
I am the creator of this little Monk-fan-films and I have to say "Thank you very much" for your nice words about them. They are made with a game called "The Movies" which belongs to my sons. ("Monk Cast"--the story was made by one of my sons--charakters and all other little films by me.) They are my very first ones--I just tried and I want to make some more every now and then. Yes, it is not so easy to create the characters as real lookalikes, but I tried my very best--believe me. The film that is only in German ("Monk cast Vorstellung"=means "Monk cast introduction") will be added in English as soon as possible (I'll tell you here, okay?)
@Alex: I'll write you a PM in German. Please check it!
Special greetings to GlassBell and Monk0512 Nice to "meet" you here .
Monkish greetings Ariana

The first thing Monk's going to do now is dig up Grandpa Neville's corpse (not himself, of course, when there's all that dirt around) and do something to send his soul to the 8th circle of Nell. Or maybe some place that resembles Monk's own personal Nell...
I'd give it an 8.0. There did seem to be something missing, but it wasn't detrimental to a reasonably good plot. I liked his continual run-ups to the boat--only to see he could just have easily stepped on board. The "I've been kidnapped" phone call was a riot as well. Certainly I would go along with those of you who felt Sharon Lawrence went a little overboard with the profanity, but I think she's a good player for Stottlemeyer in the present (and certainly they can build her character further in future episodes as needed). Now I am eager to see Karen return eventually (not this season, but sometime down the road) just so the two of them could square off, be it verbally, physically, or what have you.

LOL! Nell is where the *really* bad people go! The disorderly, unorganized ones.
Adrian doing the rrun ups to the boat was funny. It reminded me of two of my dogs trying to jump up into a chair, "...back up, up you go!...no, wait, back up..." And when he started to run for it, I cringed, I was so afraid he was gonna jump, hit that deck thing and slip, whack his head again and fall into the water.
I loved the look he shot at Natalie as he was walking down to the boat and she called, 'Leap and a net will appear!' but wondered what was that little hop thing he did? Was that him 'leaping'?

I liked this episode. It was nice to see Leland happier, instead of miserable with his love life. (Although her watching him through the window at the end was stalker-like).
I also loved the part about the correspondence course for swimming. And Adrian reading the "instructions" while he was in the water! Also the part where the realtor asked why Adrian didn't hang onto the toilet seat to float! LOL

Aug 5 2006, 01:47 PM
I also thought that this was not a very good episode. Natalie was annoying, pushing her entreprenurial values on Monk; he's never been the business tycoon type. She was trying to help Monk gain confidence, I guess, although--as she's done before--she might have been trying to get something out of it for herself (salary raise?). The whole plot was kinda weak, though I loved Leland reviving his romantic skills; I don't yet have an opinion on the realtor--that relationship could turn out to be interesting.
stotfan, I was happy to see him looking again, though I don't know if the computer dating service is that good an idea. Is it? Anyone know anything about these things? But other than a couple of mentions about his ex-wife (which were pretty funny, too) he's seemed pretty happy before this week to me. I was thinkiing divorce really seemed to be agreeing with him.
And I loved just about everything Adrian said this week, I even wrote a list of favorite quotes, and the other rhings I liked. I didn't hate everything, just that the magnitude of how much I disliked that one person seemed to outweigh how much I liked the other stuff.
The toilet seat/lifepreserver was really funny, too, and the swimming course throygh the mail was great. My daughter said, 'Think of the money we could have saved if we had done that! And I wouldn't have gotten a sunburn!' And Adrian made me think of my son again because my son refers to that week as 'That time you made me take drowning lessons.'
I loved Adrian going back to touch the flagpole, and that even while he was trying to keep his head above the water, he was holding that card up, trying to read it.
Wasn't that dog in a movie about a dolphin? Zeus and Roxanne or something?
Some of the best stuff-
"You know me, it's gotta be snuff."
"Did I ever tell you about my Grandpa Neville?'
"No, is he in the box?"
"Mr. Monk, there's a point to the story."
"I don't think so. I was listening carefully." (I have got to find a way to work this into a conversation sometime!)
"You can't be afraid to take risks!"
"I think I can...In fact, I think I already am! Hold on...Germs, heights, snakes, milk, needles, risks- Yeah! It's on there. Number six." (So. Darn. FUNNY!)
I loved Adrian eating the sandwich (at first) with a knife and fork. Not sure he would talk with food in his mouth though.
"Grown ups have a word for that, we call it embezzlment." Yes we do. I don't know how to spell it, but I know what it means! And this? Is it! Loved how he said it. Adrian must have started taking Snarky Pills. I like it.
Apparently Natalie gets very bored between jobs for the Police Department. She's started writing books about her adventures on the job and planning Adrian's future. And embarked on a life of crime, herself! She needs a hobby. Or another hobby. Yoyoing maybe?
"I didn't know you liked Bossa Nova..." with JGS line delivery it was great.
I got the impression on first viewing that the captain was sleeping on Randy's futon, but that can't be right because Randy asked him about when did he put in a hot tub.
I'm with Adrian, Grandpa Neville needed to shut up occasionally.
"Avoid the south east barrier, that's my advise!" Wow, spoken with so much conviction, there must be a joke there somewhere I'm not getting, but it's still funny. Adrian might even think this guy's a much wiser man than Grandpa Neville.
"I hate private investigators!"
"So do I! It was her idea!"
This and the guy in the bar punching him seem to be a shout out to those old detective movies/novels where it seemed like people got all hotheaded over almost nothing, like everyone was on a hair trigger. Would have been funny if they had played some noir film background music and had Adrian doing a voice over. "We went down to the docks, because that was where the crome took place and because Natalie was driving and we pretty much go where she wants to go...Not my idea...Anyway, we met a very unpleasant man who resembled his dog, who resembled a dog in a movie about a dolphin...After some sage advise about the south east barrier that I'll take to my grave, he suddenly became irritated and aggressive. It was then that I was pretty sure, he'd had dealings of a sort with my client that morning. She seemed to have that affect on people..."
"How'd you get so cheap?"
"I work for a living! Or at least I used to. Now I just get bull kelp(?) splashed on me!"
"Help me! She's gone mad!"
I liked Randy knowing where the paper came from!
Why was the school teacher wearing yellow flip flops? They seemed odd for the clothes she was wearing and for her to be going out with her boyfriend/shopping. Why has no one complained about that fashion felony? If it was Natalie, someone would have commented. They might have even gotten Julian Hodge out of jail to do it.
"When I was a detective or a consultant, I would *point* to the bad guy, and the *cops* would go in, and *they* would get shot at, or beat up or hit in the stomach, and it was a wonderful system and see, everyone was happy!"

That's supposed to evoke the two fisted private eye stories the episode is parodying. In my estimation they did it quite well. Linda Fusco's language is supposed to illustrate that she's no lady, but a dame in the same tradition. As for Stottlemeyer being attracted to her, I think he's just doing a 180 away from Karen. Eventually he'll realize he wants to drive.

Liv, I love the film noir narration idea! Maybe one night Monk falls asleep as there's a '40s detective film on TV and has a dream . . .
I figured that the hitting and stuff was supposed to be like those movies.

LMAO!! Yeah, I was thinking about that, too! I was wondering when he was going to insist that they start using his car so he could drive. When they got to the marina at the end and the captain and Annoying Woman got out of the car, and then before that when she first met the captain and was wearing the same color outfit that Natalie was, I wondered if that was supposed to make me think that they were like mirror universe versions of Adrian and Natalie or if it was just my mind see it that way. Actually several things about her made me think of Natalie. Except I like Natalier and always have.
Thanks, Renee. Maybe I should do an Adrian's Blog about this episode in that style. I wonder if I could? Or really want to.

One way I could live with the Stott-stalker is if she turns out to be the villain, like some of those "dames" in the old movies. Wouldn't that be something? I mean, she just HAPPENED to know all those things about Stottlemeyer -- she SAID she guessed, but what if she actually knew them from researching him? It would fit with her stalker-like act at the end, and it would also fit with her lame excuse for coming to Monk -- she REALLY came to use him to get to Stott.
And then Stott could play the Bogey role and have to turn her in! I think he'd make a pretty good Bogey, don't you guys?
I wouldn't mind if at some point she was a victim or a villain myself. I just don't think though that she could have known to park her car there at that time to make sure that guy would hit it and be able to go to Adrian's office, and then it would be pretty tricky for her to show up there later when Leland was there.
I'm all for her being arrrested for voyeurism, stalking or harrassment. Or for her showing a house out in the suburbs somewhere and getting killed in some bizarre fashion. Maybe she'll be arrested in connection with a series of murders; all the previous occupants of that apartment have disappeared or died mysteriously just after their first year lease was up. They found a whole bunch of Buicks in the bay with a body in the trunk of each one. All of them men with mustaches and collectors of odd pachyderm factoids. The last one made the mistake of sharing the trivia that 'Rhino horns are made of the same stuff as hair, fingernails and fish scales.'

Kudos, Tom Scharpling! What a fun, tightly written script! I think Linda Fusco's a great (and wonderfully written) character! Thanks for writing "Private Eye" and letting us see a side of Leland that we haven't seen before!
Kudos, Peter Weller! Excellent direction! Felt more like a movie to me, than a TV episode.
Kudos, Sharon Lawrence! Your performance as Linda Fusco was everything I could have wanted ~~ and more!
Kudos, Ted Levine! Your facial expressions alone throughout the episode conveyed Leland's thoughts and feelings, but you also spoke your lines perfectly! ("I'm looking for Sam Spade") I love Leland even more!
I loved "Private Eye" and everything about it (oh, except there weren't enough scenes between Leland and Linda, of course!). I had heard, prior to the article link I posted in the other "Private Eye" thread, that the feeling on the set was that Sharon Lawrence could return to "Monk" (and to Leland ) in future episodes. I hope she does ~~ sparingly ~~ as plot and time permit. I thought her character was perfectly executed: strong self-esteem, brassy, brash, take-charge, even a bit controlling.
I don't personally believe in love at first sight ~~ I think it only really happens in TV shows and movies ... oh, yeah! This is a TV show! GO, CAPTAIN STUDLEMEYER!!!
It was great to see the personal side of Leland's character without the "caving in" (that's not really the right phrase, but I can't think of a better one) to Karen's manipulation. I think Linda and Karen are a lot alike (strong-willed, etc.), but with a major difference.
Contrast how Karen manipulated Leland into allowing her to keep filming her police squad documentary, to how Linda convinced Leland to ... wait a minute. Linda didn't "convince" or "manipulate" him to do anything (IMO). When she pointed out that "it's time to do this" (get his own apartment), Leland asked: "Do you think?" She gave him her very valid reasoning and allowed Leland to make the decision.
And contrast that to Natalie telling Adrian that she thought "It's time to do this" (start his own agency) having ALREADY leased the office space, ALREADY had $85-worth of business cards printed, etc., with Adrian's "big bonus" (that Adrian never knew he got ~~ "Grown-ups have a word for that: Embezzlement")!
Oh yeah: Loved the swimming instructions card! ("Don't panic ... forget that!"); loved when Leland spun his weddding ring on the credenza top while reading online dating profiles ("been there ... married that"); loved "It's a futon"; loved Grandpa Neville and Adrian acquiescing so he wouldn't have to hear another Grandpa Neville story! "Leap and a net will appear ... my ass!" LOL!
I loved everything and everybody in "Mr. Monk, Private Eye"! No, I'm not a USA Network employee ~~ I'm the Luckiest MONK fan in the World!

I could not agree more...you took alot of my own thoughts on the whole Leland issues. I was so miffed when Karen handed him the divorce papers and when he asked "why" she said..."because you have to ask" after she had lied about going to friend's houses and being with friends at the movies and such....it gives a girls night out a bad name!!!
Anyway, the way these two looked at each other, was awsome...I have always liked leland and this was so human...
I have to admit when Monk said "leap and the net will appear my a**" we all cracked up for aleast 5 mins.
To TPTB great show...

Hello Renee and thanks for your kind words! It's great to "meet" so many of my old friends here. While I liked the episode more than you did, I honor your well-thought-out points and agree with several. Yes, the doctor character had "no" charm or finesse- to a chilling degree. Most "real" doctors are a bit "smooth."
Why didn't his lover wait to break up until they were back on shore? Why does the victim-to-be in so many murder mysteries always look away and make killing him or her so easy?
I do agree that the "SOB" thing was said too much. Said too much it loses its shock value and just comes off as "potty language." Remember when Sharona kept saying "damn" over and over when her Volvo was ailing in Billionaire Mugger? Then, Adrian said "why don't you say damn a few more times?" (sarcastically) This time he didn't react at all. While my tendency is to initially like the realtor character I think her acceptability over time (several appearances) could go either way. Like anything else, it depends on how the writers want to write her. But Leland needs somebody. Everybody needs somebody.
Variety is the spice of life but nowadays spice is getting expensive!

I guess I'm talking to myself but I got lazy and didn't notice who to reply to. Talking to myself AND a sentence ending in a preposition! Eek! Clearly my days of sanity and schooling are far behind me!
All that just to say that personally the realtor peering across into Leland's new apartment didn't bother me for at least three reasons:
First and foremost her profession is being a realtor and a sharp realtor notices fine details, really looks over neighborhoods, etc.
Second, she was very upfront with him before her surprise phone call that she lived just across the way.
Third, her "spying" happened during the day which I think makes things more innocent and less "peeping tom" than would the same behavior after dark.
Here's a bonus fourth reason: the writers may be building up to a relationship between them and her unusual "attentiveness" neatly paves the way. In any event, stalking is to be judged by the "stalkee" and Stott didn't seem bothered.

Typical Randy: "This looks like an office"
MONK in water after throwing away the toilet seat: Washing his hands furiously in all that water!! So funny!!!
Lot of good lines. Was looking forward to seeing Sharon Lawrence in this. Didn't like her SOBing. Undecided if she should be a regular. She was also in "Degree of Guilt" with JAG star David James Elliott. Didn't like her character in that at all.
A question was asked about why victim wore flipflops with her outfit. I would guess if she owned sailing shoes (or whatever they're called), her husband would wonder why she had them? For safety aboard, she wore the ff.
Natalie was too controlling when it came to MONK's money. She should have consulted with him first.
But the episode was excellent. Thanks.
Now waiting to see the one about the married Dr Kroger. Noticed he didn't wear a wedding ring. But then, some men don't. Let's see if the writers sneak one on him in the Aug.11th episode.

That's true. The writers still have a chance to develop her in more likeable ways, if they try. I used to hate Randy until they started making him more respectful to Monk. So we'll see how it goes!
I can deal with it if they tone her down and make her into her own character. Right now she seems like a mix of Leland and Natalie magnified. With a bit of Natalie's mom thrown in. And a lot of the things I hated so vehemently about her could be attributed to the noir detective movie/novel feel that the writers were going for, the characters and the writing style for those are anything but subtle. Things like the 'entrance' she made, with the little pretentious pose and butting into the conversation between two people who don't even know her, those are fairly classic noir conventions. But I get irritated with those movies so the way she acted in this episode did and always will irritate me. The same for the way Natalie was behaving, but I guess that considering that I did and still do like Natalie in most episodes, if this character appears again, she will have a chance to redeem herself and be less abrasive. Not sure if her belief that she is the center of the universe is part of that ‘noir’ characterization, but that is the main thing that needs to go. I just really hope that if she shows up again, she won’t be acting like a ‘dame’ and like she does/should run everything.
I also hope that she won’t be all stalker and have that behavior continue to be treated as cute or okay just because she is a woman, does it in the daylight, or lets him know she is doing it. Those things don’t make as much difference as how the person on the other end of it feels about it. Stalkers/voyeurs can be female, they do it in the daytime as well as at night, and they do make a point occasionally of being sure that the victim is aware that they are being watched because it gives them the ability to cause fear, or heightened fear and in affect, control the other person’s behavior to a degree. Think of how creepy it would be if someone, even someone you knew, called you and told you they could see what you were doing right that moment, what you were wearing, ect… If they did it once, it could be funny, or a joke. If they did it again, it might not be as funny. If they persistently do it, it will get creepier and make you feel less safe in your own home. It didn’t seem to bother Leland as much as it would have bothered me. It would have seemed very, very creepy to find out someone was watching me through my window so closely that they knew I'd broken something and was looking for my broom, and even told me where my broom was. It would have put most female characters very much on edge, knowing that someone was watching them that closely from across the street, but that doesn’t mean that because she is female that this behavior done consistently is okay, it just means that women in general are more on their guard about that sort of thing than men because you hear about it happening to women more often.
Since Leland didn’t seem to feel creeped out, and if it’s not something she makes a habit of, maybe there’s nothing to it, but she did come across as a very controlling person in this episode and combined with her watching him through the window at the end, she’s definitely showing the potential to be a stalker. If at some point it starts to bug Leland and he wants some space and she seems unable or unwilling to give it to him, she is officially a stalker. Right now, it’s debatable and pretty much up to individual interpretation.
I don't have any problem with the actress, I don't even know who she is. I have heard of SL before and haven’t heard bad things. But this character as she was portrayed in this episode was *very* unlikable, IMO, and seemed to me to have the potential to be a seriously creepy stalker if she appears in other episodes. If the character was supposed to make me dislike her and make me feel like she is someone they should avoid then I have to say Sharon Lawrence has really impressed me and I think she should be considered for lots of awards and the writers did a really good job of writing a character who is meant to have the potential to be a world class freak, but take a few episodes to show whether she really is or not. You know how sometimes, creepy people are really sly and you can’t tell whether they are actually freaky or if it’s just your freak alarm being a bit too touchy. If that’s what they were going for, they all nailed it. And it wouldn't be the first time they have had a character in an episode or two and then meet a bad end as either a victim or a bad guy.
I almost forgot to add that another reason I am wary of having her (and in this case any woman Leland might become involved with) come back for more than one episode, or to have very many episodes that have too much to do with Leland dating is because I'm just not really that interested in watching the romantic lives any of these characters might or might not have. Now if Adrian became romantically involved with someone for longer than an episode, there would just be no way they could continue writing the show about an OCD detective in the quality and way that they have since the beginning, they would have to devote so much attention to dealing with his new relationship. And with this being the main character and a person with the issues he has, they couldn't just ignore it or keep it low key, it would have to pretty much take over the show. The show usually focuses on his professional *and* his personal life in every episode.
The other characters could concievably be involved with someone romantically for longer than a single episode without it being such a big deal that it would intrude or overshadow what the show has been about from the beginning, especially if it was Leland or Randy because for the most part, we usually only see them in a professional setting and it would make sense if we only saw or heard about Randy or Leland's romances once or maybe twice a season. I've enjoyed this show as a comedy/mystery show for four years now, I haven't missed romantic entanglements or felt like they were needed before and really have been happy about the fact that they haven't been there for the most part. When romance starts to become more of a major factor, it gets harder to avoid the show becoming melodramtic and soap opera like. A romance themed episode every now and then or an occasional mention of a girlfriend or boyfriend is one thing, and can be a nice temporary change of pace, but too many episodes that involve romantic themes or if one or more characters start talking about a girl/boyfriend all the time is not really the same show I have loved all this time.

I don't know where they're going with it. I guess it would be nice if they toned her down a notch and the Captain had a little romance. Nice, but not as exciting as it would be if she turned out to be a stalker or a killer. That would be fun.
I don't really have a complaint about Linda except that she was a little rude to Natalie. As to the stalker-ish stuff, I think we should go by Stottlemeyer's reaction. He seemed fine with it for now. Whatever direction they choose to take the character is okay with me. I'm sure they'll flesh her out.
Here's a little article in which Sharon Lawrence uses your description of the character, Liv:
From The L.A. Daily News
DOUBLING UP: Sharon Lawrence makes her debut as the new love of Capt. Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) on tomorrow night's (8/4) installment of "Monk" -- with the door wide open for return visits by her character, a high-powered real estate agent she describes as "very controlling." Lawrence starts work at month's end on Kevin Williamson's forthcoming "Hidden Palms" mystery-soap-serial set in Palm Springs, Calif., for the CW. "When I started doing 'Monk,' I didn't know 'Hidden Palms' was going to be picked up," she explains. "The number of episodes and the amount of freedom I am allowed with the CW show is something we arranged going in. The two shows will communicate with each other," says the one-time "NYPD Blue" actress. Full Article
One thing I didn't like about the episode was the Buick product placement. I don't mind those product placements that are worked into the plot naturally, cleverly and smoothly, (why wouldn't Monk have Clorox products in his kitchen?) but this was as smooth as an old clunker driving into a used car lot. It didn't even look like the sort of car Linda should be driving. I think Ms. My-face-is-on-every-billboard-in-town would have picked something flashier.
