Looking at this board I haven't seen anyone mention the glaring continuity issues on the first two shows of the season. A couple of fellow fans and I think that possibly the mistakes are for a purpose, perhaps a contest in the future. The first episode was rife with mistakes, I'll only mention the one glaring in your face to any mystery fan mistake in the second episode. When you first see the victim in the wing-back chair you see the head-wound and the blood, as the camera pans back you see the left-outside of the wing on the chair, there is no exit hole. Later we see the same wing blown out.
I've also noticed the writing isn't as tight. The first episode (mistakes and all) was a very poor case for Monk to take. The glitter on the gun? Come on now, that's a very far stretch even for Monk to make a connection. That being said the other characters have lost any three demensional quality, Natalie is an after thought, Captain Stottlemeyer and Lt Disher just seem to be along for the ride. Are there new writers? I don't know. I do know that the show has lost the quality it had before.

Yes, these are the same writers who've been writing the show from the beginning. I think they've done an outstanding job with the first two episodes of the season. Admittedly, I don't think that the mystery was the most important element in either one, but they were servicable if not inspired. There was a lot more to those episodes which you may have missed if you were worried about how tight the mystery was.
The secondary characters seem very three dimensional to me. Natalie will have a lot to do in the next episode and Stottlemeyer is featured prominently in an upcoming episode as well. The show is called Monk, however, and most of the time he will be center stage, particularly in episodes early in the season.
As far as continuity goes, those mistakes which aren't deliberate (and I think a few are) are not usually the writer's responsibility. It just happens during the course of filming. With limited time and a limited budget it's not possible to get it all perfect. No television show is error free.

For the record, ognib is not related to me, and ognib was his name-o. FYI.
BTW, how many points were we awarding for saying that there must be new writers? I keep forgetting...

Indeed. Even the best writers can make notable mistakes in continuity at times. As for me, I'm glad they do look beyond the mysteries at times and show the characters' personal sides; it makes them so much deeper and enjoyable to to watch. Plus, I think it's to the show's benefit that the writing staff has been more or less intact so far; everyone knows where they've been and where they're going.
