Full Version: What we know about Trudy

Marjorie
I thought it would be fun to start a thread, listing what we've learned about Trudy through four seasons of Monk. I will start out with the things I remember, and I would love everyone to contribute.

In the most recent episode, "Mr. and Mrs. Monk," we learned the following:

1. Trudy put cinnamon in her coffee -- a trick she picked up in Spain.
2. Trudy is allergic to fish.
3. Trudy worked as a reporter for a newspaper, writing hard-hitting exposes. Does anyone know the name of the newspaper?

In "Mr. Monk Gets Drunk," we learned the following:
1. She and Adrian honeymooned at the Allacco Inn and Winery.
2. Her favorite wine is a 1984 Allacco Cabernet.

In "Mr. Monk Goes Back to School," we learned the following:
1. One of her best friends in high school was Arleen Cassidy, vice-principal of Ashton Preparatory School. (I think. It was hard to read the sign in front of the school. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)
2. Trudy attended Ashton on scholarship. She was the valedictorian of her class and worked on the yearbook committee.
3. Trudy painted flowers on the Class of 1977's mural.
4. She loved to write poetry. Her favorite place to write at Ashton was under a certain tree on campus.
5. According to Arleen, she was quiet, smart and didn't date much. Trudy was waiting for the right man and would know him when she found him.

In "Mr. Monk and the Game Show," we learned the following:
1. Trudy's parents are Dwight and Marsha Ellison.
2. Dwight Ellison is a successful game show producer.
3. Trudy drives very fast.

Please add your own contributions to the list. I'm particularly interested in the following information:

1. What were Trudy's birth year and death year? Trudy's tombstone has been shown several times on the show. A related question is how old was Trudy when she died.
2. How and when did Trudy and Adrian meet? Is this even revealed?
3. Why did Trudy have a separate office if she had a desk at the newspaper? Had she quit the paper and was working freelance at the time of her death? This question might be answered in the first Dale the Whale episode.
RomanSoldier
Trudy was born in 1962 and died in 1997. She was 34 when she died.

It isn't suprising that she didn't date much at Ashton, she was three years ahead of everyone else. She graduated at 15!

They met on August 12, but I don't know what year Where? Probably Berkley. Monk should have started college in 1977 at age 18, the same year Trudy should have started. I'd bet they met their junior or senior year. They didin't marry until 1990, though.

Don't know about the office, but I think someone else was paying for it until she died.
RomanSoldier
Ashton is the name of Julie's middle school ("Election").
Marjorie
Thanks RomanSoldier for the great information about Trudy. In which episode(s)did you get those facts about Trudy (if you know). I don't remember any of that. In regard to Julie's school being Ashton, I know! It was what I thought when I read the sign in front of the school in Mr. Monk Goes Back to School. I probably mis-read it, but it looked like Ashton to me. The writing was very small. Did anyone else try to read the name of the school?

Wow Marjorie, I think the fans will slove Trudys musder befor monk does. It's wierd, he can solve almost every murder in San Fransico exepet his wifes.

Trudy went to Ashton Preparatory School; Julie's school was Ashton Junior High School.

I am 99% sure that I know who killed Trudy. I'm just waiting for the final episode to show me that I'm right.

Trudy was born in 1962 and died in 1997.
-her tombstone, seen in many episodes

She was 34 when she died.
-"Dale the Whale"

It isn't suprising that she didn't date much at Ashton, she was three years ahead of everyone else. She graduated at 15!
-"Goes Back to School" in combination with her year of birth

They met on August 12, but I don't know what year
-"Asylum"

Where? Probably Berkley. Monk should have started college in 1977 at age 18, the same year Trudy should have started. I'd bet they met their junior or senior year. They didin't marry until 1990, though.
-"Other Detective" mentions that Adrian went to Berkley. In "Manhattan" we learn that he was 45 in 2004, therefore born in 1959. "Game Show" and others tell that they married in 1990. I would assume that Adrian started college at the age of 18, if not a little earlier. Since Trudy is often said to be brilliant it would only make sense that she went to UC at Berkley.

Office? Who pays for their own office unless they have their own business?
RomanSoldier
Plus,

1. Her last words were "Bread and Butter" ("Dale the Whale).
2. The man who built the bomb which killed her was Warrick
Tennyson, who was hired by a six-fingered man. "Manhattan"
3. He was from Los Angeles "Game Show"
4. She loved New York City "Manhattan"
5. She kept every promise she ever made "Blackout"
6. She always went barefoot, even when it was cold out "Blackout"
7. She must have had the patience of a saint to live with Adrian, according to Stottlemeyer ("Very, Very Old Man")
8. On her last day she went to a taxidermist named Street to see about getting her pet stuffed "Billionaire Mugger"
9. She was buying cough medicine for Ambrose when she died. That's why she was in that parking garage. "Three Pies"
10. Her favorite dish is chicken something or other "Asylum"
11. She was engaged in a legal battle with Dale the Whale in 1993 because she called him the "Ghengis Khan of Finance" ("Dale the Whale").
12. She is really dead "Mrs. Monk"
mdr55
She wanted to start a family but Adrian wasn't ready yet because he wanted to focus on his career at the time thinking they have time to raise a family later. Hindsight is only 20/20.

Adrian never really wanted children, thinking that after his childhood it wouldn't work well. Interestingly in the dream sequence in "Cobra" Trudy mentions that she wants children even though she's dead.

Wow, you're the Trudy expert! You may be right or not about Trudy's killer (I have read your theory), but frankly I hope we don't have to see the ending to the mystery for several more years! It's hard to imagine TV anymore without looking forward to a Monk episode!

Physically she's dead. Kind of hard to have kids once that happens.

3.It is the San Francisco Chronicle. When Monk visited Trudy's desk the old article was visible in his hand.

My questions are how many different actresses have played Trudy? Has Melora Hardin played her twice? Have any other actress played her twice?

I just watched Psycic and Dale the Whale last night. One of them said that it was the "Examiner." She must have transfered.

Which episode was Monk reading the newpaper with the line "Detective's Wife Slain?"
pinger71
I'm trying to remember if the Chronicle bought out the Examiner years ago because there was a time when they had their own vending machines but the only place I see the Examiner was when I was at the Oakland A's game when they retired Dennis Eckersley's number last Saturday. There was a Examiner vending machine marked "free."

You are correct. The SF Chronicle and the SF Examiner are one and the same. The next largest circulation newspaper would probably be the Oakland Times or else the San Jose Mercury.

I didn't get a chance to visit this site for a few days and just finished reading everyone's posts! There is some great information here. Thanks to everyone who contributed. I hope that we can keep adding things as the series continues. I got the idea for this thread after visiting a fan site dedicated to "Colombo." Someone had written a very detailed article on everything we found out about Mrs. Colombo during that show's run.

RomanSoldier, I loved the encyclopedia article you wrote on Trudy. I'm very happy that this thread was your inspiration. I want to especially thank Tami for confirming that Trudy went to Ashton Preparatory School and pinger71 for posting the name of the newspaper that she worked for.

In keeping with the theme of this thread, I remembered the other day that Trudy's favorite perfume was Shalimar. That fragance actually exists.
Marjorie
I was talking to a friend who reminded me that the "Mr. and Mrs. Monk" episode aired on August 12, the anniversary of when they first met. Also, Adrian tells Dr. Kroger that Trudy's birthday was the day before, so that would put her birthday as August 11.

I laughed when I read what you wrote for No. 12!! (For a while it was nice to have Trudy alive, but I changed my mind after Adrian said "if's that true, then nothing's true.")

I wanted to make a side note to your point about Trudy being killed by a car bomb. We know that she was the actual target of the bomb. For years, Adrian believed that she was either killed accidentally in an attempt to kill him or she was killed to get back at Monk for one of the cases he worked on.

Corrections:
She was going to see Kelly Street to write a report about an animal which had been stuffed.
She called Dale the Whale "the Genghis Khan of World Finance." I guess he couldn't afford to buy the Examiner/Chronical to keep his name out of it.

My theory about the actual day of Trudy's birthday could be wrong. I know that the show isn't always aired in the order that the shows were produced, i.e. the Halloween episode. But, in "Mr. and Mrs. Monk," there was a clock in Dr. Kroger's office that also displayed the day of the week. When I was watching the show, I thought to myself, "That's neat; they actually had the correct day on the clock." Was I imagining that? I couldn't check this out myself because I accidentally taped over "Mr. and Mrs. Monk." If somebody watches "Mr. and Mrs. Monk' in the near future, look at the clock!

Buying the Examiner/Chronicle would have been too tame of a solution for Dale the Whale. He probably threatened Trudy as she researched him for her article, thinking intimidation would work. When the article ran, he filed the lawsuit. Dale didn't do this because he thought he would win or cared to win. He just wanted to make Adrian and Trudy miserable by dragging the case out in court as long as possible.

Adrian told Sharona that Trudy was so upset during that year she would often sit in her car and cry.

R/e #10 Chicken
It was Chicken Cacciatore (pronounced catch-ah-tory). It is a chicken disk with tomatoes and it is one of my favorites. Adrian is allergic to tomatoes which is why Dr. Kroger knew Adrian went there (Trudy's old home) to cook Trudy dinner.

Someone mentioned Trudy was 34 when she died from Dale the Whale: it was also referenced in Mr. Monk and the Other Woman. In the beginning of that show Monk is with Dr. Kroger and he closes his eyes and sees Trudy brushing her hair and Monk says "Everytime I close my eyes she's there. She is always wearing the same dress, she is always 34, and she is so"

Many pardons if someone has already mentioned this, but the reason Monk is so excited to meet Willie Nelson ("Red Headed Stranger") was that Trudy adored his music?
annajones
I'm not sure if you are asking about Trudy or if someone had mentioned it. Assuming you are asking about Trudy, Monk said to Willie Nelson in that episode I'm your second biggest fan. Willie then asked him who is the first. Monk answered his wife Trudy. So it sounds like both Monk and Trudy liked Willie Nelson. As Monk said r/e Willie "you are the da bomb".

Trudy also used strawberry shampoo and lilac lotion (something Monk hated when she was alive, but now brings her to mind when he smells her pillow). She also calls him 'my darling' - Medicine

Thanks so much. I did misread it then.

Just watched "Mr. Monk Goes To A Wedding." We got to see Monk's Wedding Album with some great pictures of Trudy. Then later Adrian makes a speech to delay the killer's getaway and tells the crowd, "Trudy always said that marriage was 90 percent love and 10 percent forgiveness. She was married to me, so she was sort of an expert -- on forgiveness." I found this interesting because Trudy has always been portrayed as not being bothered by Adrian's OCD tendencies. Adrian's comment here suggests that even Trudy lost her patience with Adrian at least some of the time.
crazychrismonker
That's to be expected. No marriage is ever completely without difficulties, and I'm sure he drove Trudy to the edge at times too. The fact she could put up with him to the level that's been suggested just shows how much she did care for him. Apparently the Ellisons did a beautiful job raising her and instilling her with great qualities. It must have been a packed cemetery when they laid her to rest.
MonkFan
Another thing is that Adrian wasn't nearly as bad as he is now when he was married; he used to shake peoples hands and laugh a lot (per Employee of the Month). Everything changed when Trudy was killed. He had some quirks--counting and keeping his food separate (per Game Show)--but nothing like he is today. Maybe Trudy's look alike would look more like Sharona had he been like he is now back then. Just a thought!
Chloe
Excellant point, MonkFan!

Yes, I thought it was interesting in "Gameshow", how Adrian would slouch in his chair, make jokes, and when Trudy put something slightly askew, he didn't fix it. I love the line:

"You should SEE him at work, all the other cops just stand back and watch."
"So they know what NOT to do."

LOL! That was so cute. Adrian was a much more independant soul when Trudy was alive, and I think his O.C.D. mostly boiled down to minorly inconvinient tendencies.
Chloe
My appologies for the double-post, mates. I just thought of a few facts I didn't find on the thread:

+ Adrian and Trudy had been married 7 years when she was killed

+ As of "Candidate", Trudy has been dead 4 years

(and this one's obvious, because on her tombstone, but all the same) :

+ Trudy's middle name is Anne

This is really awesome, putting this together. would any of you mind if I put SOME of this on an "About Trudy" page on my fanlisting sometime later on down the line?

Just curious.

Yes, that's what I remembered. Both Monk and Trudy were fans of Willie Nelson.

While re-watching "Mr. Monk and the Game Show," I found some more trivia about Trudy. She was a huge Rock 'N Roll fan in her youth. The walls of her childhood room were covered with posters of Rock 'N Roll bands. I also got the impression from her room that Trudy was not only academically gifted but also excelled in sports. Were we ever told what sports Trudy played? There looked to be a lot of sports ribbons displayed prominently in her room. I especially liked that she had placed one on her desk lamp. That one must have been very important to her, but I could not tell what the ribbon was for. It's possible that these ribbons could have been won in academic contests.

Also in the episode, Monk discovers Trudy's diary, which had butterflies on the cover. She kept it in her desk drawer. Monk read one entry in which a young Trudy talks about the death of her dog, Ginger. Trudy had even placed a picture of her with Ginger in the diary. I'm not positive about the type of dog Ginger was, but I believe she was a Labrador Retriever.

Monk finding the diary was a very poignant moment because Trudy had thought on Monday, the day that Ginger died, that she would be sad forever. However, by Friday, when she was scheduled to go to camp, Trudy was happy again. She explained that she still thought of Ginger but only focused on the good times. Trudy then wrote that her dad had been right when he said that God wanted us to be happy. "After all, no one can be sad forever," a wise Trudy penned. Little did Trudy know how long her future husband could grieve and be sad over her own death!
Marjorie
In "Mr. Monk and the Other Woman," Monk takes Monica to a restaurant where he and Trudy frequently dined. To change the subject about her marriage, Monica goes to the jukebox, punches D7 and plays a song that Trudy liked to play when she and Monk were there. The song was "I Only Have Eyes For You." I'm not sure of the artist's name since so many people have recorded this song. Does anyone know the artist that performed the song listed on the jukebox?
Tami
I'm 100% certain that was probably the Art Garfunkel version.

It seems like I remember in the "Back to School" episode, that there was a picture of Trudy on the wall that showed she was on a tennis team.

Another important clue from "Blackout" and "Mrs. Monk" is that Trudy wasn't afraid to talk to very dangerous men, which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Okay, this is very funny! If you zoom in on Monica's hand as she's leaning on the jukebox, the song actually listed for D7 is "Spooky" by the Classics IV (with D8 being "Traces")!

I think what happened was that the waiter had discovered a shortage of frozen water, so Adrian had to tell Monica, "I only have ice for you."

I have just started posting here for the first time since the change over, but I had a little bit to add to this thread, some bits of trivia that I've collected over time. Some of it may have been mentioned before but a few things haven't and I have references or at least explanations for my reasoning on stuff if I can't give a direct reference to the show that can be checked. So here goes:

Recap of what we know about Trudy's murder:
It happened at 9 AM and no one else was hurt or killed. This is written in the headlines of the papers he is going over in The Candidate, but the smaller print in the articles below this don't say anything about her murder, they look like articles from the financial section, probably just put in to have something below the headlines to look real by Monk prop people.

The parking spot was number B5, or close to B5, the post in the background of the photos of the scene show this.

She was somewhere near a drug store picking up medicine for Ambrose, and the trigger was a cellphone. I assume that the guy set the bomb off by dialing the number. Considering this, I think it's likely that the person wanted to be certain that Trudy was the victim, probably be sure she was the only victim, he/she wanted complete control over when the bomb went off. He/She possibly even followed her to know exactly when was the best time to plant the bomb and to detonate it. We don't know if the parking garage where WT met Frank to deliver the bomb is the same garage where Trudy was murdered. The detonation method was given to us by Warrick Tennyson in Manhatten. Also we learned from him that a six fingered man named Frank hired him, paid him $2000, and met him in a parking garage. The amount of plastique used has been mentioned but is inconsistant.

There was another car bombing in the bay area at close to the same time that Monk couldn't link to Trudy's bombing, which to me seems very odd. Car bombing shouldn't be that common, should they? Two in a short period of time in the same area would usually indicate a link unless the second one was copy catted or done to make the police think it was related to the first bombing.

The level she was on was underground, I believe, because Sharona's car (jeep, whatever) in The Candidate was pointed downward when she was going to pick him up and Benjy asked what Monk was doing. You could assume that all or most parking garages in San Francisco are underground, but I don't think that's likely.

Trudy was an only child (that we know of) of Dwight and Marsha Ellison who live in Los Angelas. Dwight is a producer for television, in the third season he is producing a game show called Treasure Chest and sspects that the current champion is cheating and brings Adrian in to investigate. (Mr. Monk and The Game Show)

We know from Employee of the Month that Joe Christy, Adrian's partner, was with him when the call came through about Trudy's murder, that Adrian was laughing when the phone rang, but that no one has seen him laugh since. So we know that someone was with him and can confirm his whereabouts when it happened as well as his reaction to he news.

In Dale The Whale, Dale said that her last words, according to the coroner's inquest, were 'Bread and butter,' and he taunted Adrian about it, wondering what they meant and if they were a message to him. Adrian later told Sharona that this was something Trudy always said when they were holding hands but had to let go for a moment because some someone walked between them or a pole was in their path, so he thought it meant she was trying to tell him she had to let go for a little while but it wouldn't be forever. I don't think most people think of the phrase this way, to mean this. I have more often heard it to mean where the money they live on comes from, like her's and Adrian's jobs were their bread and butter, just as an example.

In Goes To Jail, Dale said that the bomb that killed Trudy was meant for her, not Adrian, even though Adrian always believed it was meant for him. Dale also told Adrian to go to New York to find Warrick Tennyson because WT had information about Trudy's death, that he was 'involved', and we find out in the next episode (Manhatten) that he built the bomb, and was hired by a man with six fingers named Frank.

From Billionaire Mugger, we find out that a scrap of paper from her appointment book for the day before she died read '530 Kelly Street, Mr. Simon', and Adrian normally assumed it meant an address, but every year (presumably about the same date) he realises that it might have meant 5:30 as a time and Kelly Street as a person and goes to the home of a woman named Kelly Street, but then blocks it out of him memory. In this episode, the door is answered by Ms. Street's sister, who I assumed hadn't met him before because she didn't seem to remember him, maybe she was visiting that year? She tells Adrian that Mr. Simon was her sister's dog, and Kelly hadn't been able to bury him so she had him stuffed, and maybe Trudy was doing a story about that because it is something people might consider strange. Then Kelly comes in and tells him that he's been back every year to ask about his wife's murder, which he doesn't remember. But her last entry into her apointment book that anyone is aware of is this one about Kelly Street. They don't give us any information aboiut what he might have found out previously, if anything, that he might be blocking out, just that he has been there before and this was what her last entry said. Also on the scrap of paper is a note in red ink 'P/U Drycleaning', in sort of lighter black ink 'Quincey's B-day' (assuminng this is how they know it was for the day before her murder, different inks indicate it was written at different times with different pens, and finally, in darker black ink, '530 Kelly Street' just below that in the same ink, and parallel to this is what looks like 're. ' with most of what follows missing, then below that, same ink, but on the line rather slanted across the page like the words above it, is 'Mr. Simon'. I wonder if this indicates that it was written at a different time from the stuff above it about Kelly Street and re. Though it could be rd. like the abbreviation for road. If she wrote the abbreviation for road, it wouldn't make sense for her to have written out the word Street unless it was the woman's last name. Could be nothing though.

Among the things that Adrian has at his home as evidence besides the scrap from the apointment book:
A watch
newspaper clippings from the days or weeks after the murder
photos of the crime scene
copies of the police reports

One Forensics lab report says that they also recovered hair, her watch, contents of her purse and clothing framents and has the date on the report as 11/11/97. That was on a Monday and one of the headlines said it was a Monday Morning when she was killed.

Headlines read:

No Links To Other Car Bombing Suspected - Detective Adrian Monk of the San Francisco Police has failed to produce evidence linking Monk car bombing with... (I can't read further than this, another paper is obscuring it)

We know that her birthday was on the tenth of a month, and that the beginning of Mr. and Mrs. Monk, the clock in Kroger's office said 11 Tue. He said the day before was her birthday. The only times the 10th came on a Monday in 2005 were Jan and Oct. I am inclined to Think that Trudy's birthday was in Oct. Although Adrian has said more than once she was 34 years old, one of the papers said she was 35. This could be a writing glitch or possibly explained later on.

She played tennis and apparently graduated at the top of her class at the age of 15 ion 1977. She had a golden retriever named Ginger as a child and at one time also might have had a small white dog, a picture of her being licked by a little white dog can be seen on Adrian's bedside table at the end of Asylum

She went to Madrid with Janice Ellinghouse and wrote one story with her.

She buttoned the sheets to the comforter (or someone did in Adrian's memory of her in The Candidate).

I may think of more later

I am amazed at how good you are. If you worked with Adrian he would impressed. You're memory is excellent and you obviously went into the "details". Wait a minute, for all I know you could be one of the show's writers. Hmm. Well if you are, you probably wouldn't want us to know.

Thank you! Now, do you know where I put my cellphone? I can't find the stupid thing. Memory is a very strange thing, isn't it? And no, I don't work for the show or anything (though maybe if I did we would really *know* how old Trudy was?) I don't even know if I wish I worked for the show, I have this thing about not wanting to make something I love into a job It might be pretty cool to work on the continuity though.

One of these days I need to sort out all the other stuff about the various episodes and other characters, learn how to do a real website and just put all of this trivia somewhere so it's accessable to everyone. I just don't know how to do the website.

Liv, just let me know when you're ready. I've got the web space and skills if you need instruction and/or collaboration. I'll wager whatever you can dream up can be made into a web page.

I can't help you out with the cellphone problem. I never know where mine is either.
