To me this mantra thing is ridiculous, but then maybe I just don't have a sense of humor.
I love MH, but whatever rocks peoples boat I guess. biggrin.gif

I think the mantra is silly, too. I've seen a trailer for the movie and that looks ridiculous as well.It really does not look funny at all. I don't really think the movie will do well at the box office. It's not going to be a summer blockbuster, that's for sure. But Mike has made a great living out of creating silly characters.
DEANOLIVIAareHOT
I think it is very silly. Beyond silly, and it will do MH more harm than good.

Also, someone stated that it will help her come Emmy nods. Mariska does not need any assistance because she's a shoe in.

I hope this mantra goes away as quickly as it came!

I have to agree with you Andrea. I think it's down right stupid and insulting. I don't even know why she agreed to make a cameo in this movie.

Will do her more harm than good, I don't know. She is not as well known as say Jen Aniston (sp?), Reese, Angelina and others, so that may be a blessing.

Hopefully this mantra disappears by the end of the summer.

I certainly will not see the movie, and from what Katchphraze said, it doesn't sound like it's all that good. I rather pay $10 to see Mariska playing a leading role in a movie than a cameo.

If I happen to run into Mariska in NYC (I wish, instead of seeing her son with his nanny), I certainly won't bow to her chanting her name.

Maybe in some sense it's insulting, but when you're faced with something like this, you have two choices. You can 1) be insulted or 2) take it in stride and laugh at yourself. That's probably why she agreed to do the cameo. It takes too much negative energy to be bitter about someone poking fun at your name. And Mariska doesn't strike me as a negative or bitter person at all. (Despite what her name seems to mean!)

Absolutely correct! That is probably why she agreed to do the cameo.

As far what her name means I thought she had indicated on an interview with Leno a few years ago that it meant "Dear one". Idk. It is a form of Mary or Maria in English though.

Not that I take this as definitive proof (find me a Hungarian baby book, and then I'd say it's enough proof, lol), but it's some evidence:

I think it's stupid that people are making a big deal about this movie.

Honestly, anyone in the Hindu or Buddist religion that takes offense to this movie is being extreme and needs to chill out. I am good friends with a fair amount of Hindu people and they all think it looks hilarious. Granted they are all younger and most of them grew up here, but still. The hindu culture has a great sense of humor, but you would never know it, because the only thing you all know about Hindus is that the extremists are protesting.

I'm the only non-Indian in my neighborhood. And before I got to know my neighbors I had no idea that they even had a sense of humor because all I knew about India or the middle east was extreme religious traditions and red dots. It's ridiculous how sheltered we really are from the world and how the Media can easily sway an opinion.

Every religion has had it's fair share of silly movies and even the good ones have had extremist protesting. Steve Martin in "Leap of Faith", "Sister Act", That one with Tim Allen in Amish Country, most Kung Fu movies could be considered offensive, The three Amigos (of which non-of them were hispanic), Blazing Saddles was considered racist and offensive--AND that's one of the funniest movies EVER!

If anything this movie is going to educate Americans on the Hindu culture and religion. Before this movie, how many of you even questioned or knew what Namaste meant? Several posted a big question mark to the "Mariska Hargitay" because they didn't get the joke! Now that you got the joke though- you now know a piece of Hindu fact.

It's funny how comedy educates without one knowing. Even when you're pissed at it- it still makes you question why you're pissed. Is it offensive? I don't think it is. Would you feel the same way if Mike Myer was Indian? Something tells me the protests wouldn't be as harsh if he were. And that -right there- is more offensive than what Mike is doing.

It's not like Mike Myers is making the character out to be a villian. He's not! Pitka is this fun silly character that doesn't have all of his marbles. It's a classic comedy stoke character, the only difference is that instead of it being Lucille Ball or Giligan from Gilligan's Island, Mike made him this hip hindu guy. Mike is bring Hindu to American comedy. They should be excited about that! Not offended.

It's quite brilliant when you get down to it. It's just what America and the world needs to get over this fear of middle eastern people. Don't fear it- laugh! Let's see some fun Hindu jokes. The only reason why we don't see their funny stories and or movies is because it's not mainstream and it's not in English.

That being said, I think this is a great movie for Mariska to be a part of. She has been itching to do a comedy and not only will this put her in that category but it will make her name memorable.

I can't tell you how many people DON'T know who Mariska Hargitay is. Isn't that crazy! I'm often asked who my favorite actress is and when I say Mariska Hargitay - 1 out of 10 people know who I'm talking about. And these are people IN showbiz. CRAZY! "Who's that?" I just want bonk them on the head when I get that answer.

Anyhoo- simmer down and Mariska Hargitay to you!
ScarlettVonUttenburg
OH and PPS

I don't think that they used Mariska's name for it's meaning. They used it because it rhymed with Namaste. So I really think the "Sea of Bitterness" thing was like a random fluke. But yeah- namaste- Hargitay- rhymy. It definitely had nothign to do with "Sea of Bitterness".

Nice work explaining all of that, Scar. I fall into the category of knowing jack about the hindu religion.

I agree, I don't think the 'mantra' is going to hurt MH. I think it shows she's a good egg...likes a laugh and doesn't take everything in life so seriously!

As far as whether or not this will be a 'blockbuster'...I think the jury will be out until it actually hits the theaters. From what I can remember..."Austin Powers" flew WAY under the radar, until it opened and gained the 'cult status' it ended up with.

Yes, Mike Myers plays silly characters. It is juvenile humor at it's best! It's not supposed to win an Oscar...it's just supposed to make you smile for a bit. And I'm sure this movie will do at least that....and the fact that Mariska will pop in somewhere...icing on the cake for me!

Mariska Hargitay to all of you...and goodnight smile.gif

Exactly!

Oh I will so see this movie just for the cameo. Cake, icing, and a cherry on top! That and Mike Myers usually makes the best of the stupid comedies. Wayne's World and Austin Powers 1 is good times. Thinking of those movies makes me really want to watch Tommy Boy and Dumb and Dumber. I know, stupid right? But hey-it's good for a laugh.

I didn't mean to insinuate Mariska needed any help with her when it comes to Emmy nominations, but I guess it came across that way. Sorry about that. Mariska's acting speaks for itself.

No need to apologize. I totally understood what you were saying. Perhaps I need to clarify my post. What I was trying to say is that Mariska (or anyone else) does not need THAT kind of help. I find it sickening and annoying.

Since the movie "Love Guru" is going to be in theaters this week, I thought I would bump this up. I know there were a couple of people who said they would see the movie just for Mariska's cameo (that's the impression I got). So I want a review! lol Kidding, just curious to see what the reactions are to her cameo.

I won't spoil it, but if your going to go you may want to spend the ten dollars because you want to see the movie itself, if you go to see mh, you may be VERY disapointed

Was her part really bad or was the cameo appearance disappointing?

Thanks!

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm guessing she comes in during the credits, has one line, and leaves. Am I close?

Regardless- HEY HEYYYY_ I just got my "MARISKA HARGITAY" T-shirt today YEEEEHHHHAW! Now my friends are really going to want to give me an SVU intervention! LOL!!!!! But I already know what I'm gonna do when people look at the name and say "Mariska Hargitay?"

I shall then bow to them and say "Well, Mariska Hargitay to you!" wink.gif

I know I've totally lost it. And I'm a huge GIGANTIC dork.

Honestly though, I don't know how people aren't obsessed with SVU and/or Mariska.

But I will admit that I secretly get a kick out of being the only person in my life who knows everything about Mariska Hargitay. It's kind of like my own little thing. Does anybody ever get jealous when you meet someone who says they love her too? Sometimes I do. Is that weird? You know, like my evil sub-conscience is saying "Back off BEOTCH! I'm her biggest fan!!!! ROAR!"" LOL!

Again- I'm nuts!
downsouthrider
It just wasn't very long, not enough for 10 dollars anyways. And it was kinda pointless IMO...oh yeah, and I heard this from a chick over at SVUfans, whose friend was at the premire so you may not want to take her word for it.

Scar:

I love your response for the shirt! And in regards to the intervention, I think your preaching to the choir sister on this board!! I had just been talking to a friend about SVU, telling her she had to see Undercover, but I didn't know if I could let go of my DVD copy to lend it to her. And then my cell phone rang with the LO theme song. wink.gif She started laughing, and I said, "Well, I told you I was obsessed"

But really...Mariska is only supposed to make a 'cameo.' It's supposed to be short (and in many cases, 'pointless.') Isn't that what cameos are?

I would think, the 'point' is, after her name is said countess times throughout the movie...voila...there she is.
(Though, for people who have no idea who she is (fools smile.gif ) ....yep, it will be pointless.)

Yes, I'm trying to decide whether to spend the money to see it or not. I really have no interest in seeing the movie, but would love to see MH. And speaking of L&O ringtones, I can't tell you how suprised I was the other day when I was in the dressing room at a department store and someone else just happened to have the same ring tone. I thought I was the only obsessed one, but then again, I also take notes as I watch old episodes on the most random things like how the characters take their coffee, hot dogs, etc. Yeah, I know...obsessed and proud of it.

Oh Arabesque, thank you for giving me free rein to do the same. rolleyes.gif I have been thinking lately that I need to keep notes about particular scenes, etc. (generally unimportant snippets to the rest of the world) so when I have a particular need I can locate the episode. But I won't put it in a notebook I'll just add it to my spreadsheet. wink.gif Yep, I really do have one.

And I have seen nothing but bad reviews for Guru. Not terribley unexpected. But it seems like everyone that mentions MH talks about how it's funny the first time, they run it into the ground, MH runs through and its done.
DEANOLIVIAareHOT
MH had a few words in the local rag this morning (The Redeye)...

She said that because of MM, people now know how to pronounce her name. He asked her permission to use her name as well as to make the cameo, and she loved it. She also had a blast with MM.

I was half expecting Mike Myers to bring up the fact that he says 'Mariska Hargitay' as a blessing when he was on The View yesterday. Sadly he didn't bring it up. ahhh i saw it last night, it was sad though because there weren't many people in the theatre. it started at eight and we got there at like 7 50, and it was not crowded....anyWHO
so ahhh it was boring in the very beginning until like 15 minutes into it, where my Mar Mar was seen. it was so cute, after he is blessing everyone in the room by going "mariska hargitay to you...mariska hargitay to you too.." he turns to face someone and he says and a Mariska Hargitay to....yoooouuu....Mariska Hargitay?" and then the camera turns to her, and she is all like "oh thank you so much Guru Pitka" lol then he had some surprise for her and he shows her the gift. its like some replica of his palace or something and on the top it says something like "Mariska Hargitay: special victims unit"
then she almost starts crying saying "oh thank you so much" lol
THE END! lol
ahh good times...good times... wink.gif

Thanks for the reviews and recaps on Love Guru. Also, luv4svu...thanks that makes me feel better. I actually started taking notes when I started writing fanfic because, sadly, I can't afford the dvd's yet (just have one season so far) and the info is useful when writing. I don't take handwritten notes--I also keep track on my computer. I will also confess that I am drafting out the squad room layout as I watch the show so I know how all of the hallways and rooms they show in the precinct connect (also very helpful for fanfic). I think I have it pretty well figured out by now.
DEANOLIVIAareHOT
Love Guru made $14 million this weekend. Get Smart was less than I thought, but $32 mill made it the highest rated movie this weekend.

While waiting for The Incredible Hulk to start (really good movie, BTW), I slipped into the LG. I saw the last 35 minutes, and I have to be honest, it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I was hoping to see MH, but I missed her part. I was going to leave because the Hulk was about to start, but the movie had me LMAO that I missed a few minutes of the Hulk because I wanted to see LG to the end. Some of the things in this movie made me blush, and I've seen alot.

What I could have done w/o was Jessica Alba's overrated ass. Very pretty girl, but she is just not worth all the hype. Her movies suck, and she is an average actress (maybe less than average). If it weren't for the horny teens in this country, this girl would have been history after Dark Angel. God she grates...

ANDREA

p.s. The use overuse of MH's name didn't really wreck my nerves because it was subtle the way they used it that you didn't mind. It was kind of cute.
