Hi there! Being a hockey fan, I went to the NHL to take a look at the pictures that were posted on their site of the Semi Final games that are just coming to a finish. I looked down further into the archive and lo and behold, I found this...

I loved it! Does anyone know if Tony is a hockey fan?

Go Carolina Hurricanes!!

Hey, neat...6 really nice pictures of our man Monk in white gloves with the trophy.

Thanks for posting the link to those pics! Are those actual hockey player gloves Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is wearing?? And since Tony is dressed as Monk, were these photos publicity shots exclusively for the NHL or did they do a MONK episode (one we haven't yet seen) revolving around The Stanley Cup and pro hockey and the NHL?? Maybe Teresa can fill in some of the answers here as well??

About all most of us know is that Tony Shalhoub is a big pro football fan (and The Green Bay Packers his favorite team)! It's been said that Tony holds season tickets to all The Packers' home games in Green Bay, WI.

Here's what I know: The pictures were taken on May 11th, last Thursday, on the set of Monk on location in San Pedro California. I believe they're shooting some of "Mr. Monk, Private Detective" in San Pedro. I don't know what if anything the Stanley Cup might have to do with the episode and I don't know if Tony's a hockey fan. I don't think those are hockey gloves he's wearing. They look more like don't-get-any-fingerprints-on-the-Stanley-Cup gloves.

Thanks, Teresa! Very interesting! At first when I saw the first couple of photos (of the six), I too thought they were gloves such as a film editor or coin collector or the like wears to keep skin oil and such off of precious metals' or other old/fragile/historic items. However, as the progression of the photos continued, the gloves just looked/appeared to be too thick and padded to be simply such a type of glove--especially the way they had something like adjustable collars on the top of them to fit around the wrists, etc. And, since it was The Stanley Cup, hockey gloves regular players (forwards)--not goalies--would wear seemed like a possibility... No idea if the pics were promotional or publicity for the NHL? Interesting that they tried adding the sunglasses (to the later photos shot) on Monk/Tony; and the last pic with just his eyes/forehead/top of head seen above The Stanley Cup's rim reminded me of the shot from a MONK episode they continue to use in the main title opening sequence of clips to go with Randy Newman's main title theme song "It's A Jungle Out There."

I heard or read somewhere that the NHL is doing a publicity run with famous TV and movie characters, actors, music personalities and the like with the stanley cup. It's part of a "...with Stanely" campaign. I wish I could come up with a reference, but I'll be darned if I can remember where I heard or read this. I know I've seen another celebrity doing one of the photos and covering it on an Access Hollywood, or ET, or ESPN or some other TV segment, but I can't remember which celebrity (although William Shatner keeps popping into my mind) or what show.

Im so jealous...Tony you lucky, lucky man getting to touch the NHL Stanley Cup.As a female ice hockey player i can clear it up and say that they are not hockey gloves Tony is wearing, our gloves ar bulky and kinda square. The gloves Tony is wearing are to prevent finger prints...this is because a human hand produces sweaty acidy bi products that can damage the silver ware so you have to wear gloves.Hope Tony is an ice hockey fans...i would love to get him on the ice and teach him a few moves ha ha ha ha.

The gloves aren't really necessary when handling the Cup, as I've seen plenty of pictures with people holding it without gloves on. The Cup's "handlers" (and yes, it does have two guys who travel with it around the world and tend to its care) do wear gloves. The Cup has been everywhere, however, and done many things, including being used for drinking, has held babies in the bowl, and more. Personally, I think having Mr. Monk wearing the handler's type of glove is excellent! He wouldn't want to touch it considering "you have no idea where it's been!"

And you're a hockey player, Jaime? that is so cool!! I wish I knew how to skate, let alone play hockey, but that's not something that's very popular in Florida when I was growing up. I'm a goalie fan.

Whalehugger,

I think you've hit the nail on the head: Monk is wearing the gloves to be protected himself from The Stanely Cup's germs! Great! And Clippo may well also have some further information about whether Tony (as Monk) did the photo shoot (as did other stars?) as some NHL promotion and publicity... Makes sense since Tony as Monk (and as a basketball player) lent a hand to promoting The Spokane Hoopfest 2004 by being on their promotional poster for it.

I wish i could see the Stanley cup, still i reckon you guys are right that Adrian don't want to touch it due to it's germs...i never knew the Stanley cup was used for so many things.I don't get to spend much time getting to know the NHL.Im either training or playing...whalehugger...glad to hear your a goalie fan...those guys have the toughest job in the world...although not may agree.I play defence and it's one of the loves of my life. When we come to the MonkFest next year me and my friends aim to see an NHL game and skate on American ice as your rinks are sooooo much bigger than ours.....come to think of it...i wouldn't want to touch the Stanley Cup now you guys have told me what else they do with it....germs...germs...everywhere.
