Yikes I have to run.
I wish I had time to find the letter right now but I have to run the kids to karate right now.
Fun chat though.
June can't get here fast enough.

There's a song
Massive Attack - Live With Me
(Terry Callier Version)
that I love.. and it made me think of Michael & Fiona's relationship
..
It don't matter, when you turn
Gonna survive, liveand learn
I've been thinkingabout you baby
By the light ofdawn, and in my blues
Day and night, Ibeen missing you
I've been thinkingabout you baby
Almost makes mecrazy
Come and live withme
Either way, win orlose
When you're borninto trouble you live the blues
I've been thinkingabout you baby
See it almost makesme crazy child
Nothing's right ifyou ain't here
I'd give all that Ihave just to, keep you near
I wrote you aletter and tried to make it clear
That you just don'tbelieve that, I'm sincere
I've been thinkingabout you baby
Plans and schemes,hopes and fears
Dreams I've deniedfor all these years
I've been thinkingabout you babe
Living with me, well
I've been thinkingabout you baby
Makes me wanna child
Nothing's right, ifyou ain't here
I give all that Ihave just to keep you near
I wrote you aletter darlin', trying to make it clear
How much you justdon't believe that I'm sincere
"Nul ne peut atteindre l'aube sans passer par le chemin de la nuit"
"No one can reach the dawn without going through the night way"

The thing is "the right thing" is slightly different for Fi than it is for Michael. Yes, they both want to stop Anson - but I think Fi showed she would be perfectly happy to just put a bullet in him and accept the legal consequences. Michael not only wants to take out Anson but also "fix" the situation within the intelligence community that allowed Anson to create his network.
Fi still pretty much has the "individual" as her focus and Michael is still focused on the "greater good". However with Anson's threats to Fi, in this case he is also focused on the individual who matters most to him, Fi, and unusually for Michael, I think there is also a bit a revenge wanted here against Anson.
However, Fi's letter, I think, reveals that she totally understands where Michael is coming from and not only that, but this quality is also one of the major factors that makes Michael the man she loves. The willingness to pay the price to "do the right thing".

Sam and Fi are talking right after Michael has mysteriously reappeared from being held by Vaughn. Fi says something along the lines of what Michael needing to just give this lifestyle up (this is the quote I was trying to get because I cannot recall it exactly)
Sam says that she thinks that way means that she is never gonna get it.
Well - her letter clearly says
She gets it.

Broken"
I wanted you to know I love the way you laugh
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain away
I keep your photograph, I know it serves me well
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
You're gone away
You don't feel me here anymore
The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I wanna hold you high, you steal my pain away
There's so much left to learn, and no one left to fight
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain
[X2]
'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
You're gone away
You don't feel me here anymore

There is a song from 2004 by Seether, featuring Amy Lee. It is on the hard side as far as songs go, but I love it because I believe it describes Michael and Fiona's feelings after she turned herself in. Here are the lyrics. I recommend listening to it.

So Burn Notice will be getting a third installment of its tie-in DC comic book (which provides pre-series backstory for central couple Michael and Fiona).

"Here By Me"
I hope you're doing fine out there without me
'Cause I'm not doing so good without you
The things I thought you'd never know about me
Were the things I guess you always understood
So how could I have been so blind for all these years?
Guess I only see the truth through all this fear,
And living without you…
And everything I have in this world
And all that I'll ever be
It could all fall down around me.
Just as long as I have you,
Right here by me.
I can't take another day without you
'Cause baby, I could never make it on my own
I've been waiting so long, just to hold you
And to be back in your arms where I belong
Sorry I can't always find the words to say
But everything I've ever known gets swept away
Inside of your love…
And everything I have in this world
And all that I'll ever be
It could all fall down around me.
Just as long as I have you,
Right here by me.
As the days grow long I see
That time is standing still for me
When you're not here
Sorry I can't always find the words to say
Everything I've ever known gets swept away
Inside of your love
And everything I have in this world
And all that I'll ever be
It could all fall down around me.
Just as long as I have you,
Right here by me.
And everything I have in this world
And all that I'll ever be
It could all fall down around me.
Just as long as I have you,
Right here by me.

How do you think Michael will be with Fi in prison?
I have lyrics for that, from "Losing My Mind" by Stephen Sondheim:
The sun comes up....I think about you
The coffee cup....I think about you
I want you so, it's like I'm losing my mind
The morning ends....I think about you
I talk with friends...and think about you
And do they know? It's like I'm losing my mind
All afternoon, doing every little chore, the thought of you stays bright.
Sometimes I stand in the middle of the floor...not going left, not going right.
I dim the lights and think about you.
Spend sleepless nights to think about you.
(Ok, this last part doesn't fit quite as well, but I'll include it in parentheses.)
{You said you loved me - - Or were you just being kind?
Or am I losing my mind?}

Another perfect song. I think Michael is going to go out of his mind. He's going to stop at nothing to get Fiona out of prison. Emotionally he's a wreck and I think he's going to be angry, sad and frustrated. Hopefully, he'll wake up and realize that she was right and he should have listened to her. You're right, noellem, those lyrics do fit them!

Through the years, we've seen how he gets when something happens to Fiona (i.e Hot Spot - he nearly lost his mind thinking she died; Long Way Back, when she was heading home to Ireland - he was miserable knowing he could lose her, Where There's Smoke - he could barely contain his anger at Jesse and his relief when he got her back.). He's at a point now where he can't live without her. So I think he'll be teetering on the edge of insanity.
Can't wait.

What do you mean when you say he should have listened to her? That he should have let her shoot Anson? That he shouldn't have planted that false info to burn Pearce and the others?
It would have meant Michael did the right thing, but I think Fiona would still be in prison.
The other option to which Michael could have listened was "I should run. You'll be able to bring Anson down." To which Michael accurately replied, "And you'd keep running for the rest of your life." So I'm not sure how that would have been a great option, either.
I really think Anson had Michael and Fiona in a no-win situation. What could be salvaged wasn't Fiona's freedom, but Michael's integrity - and hers, and theirs.

For me there's many different ways to answer that question. I wouldn't know if my answer would make sense, but I'll give it a go. Their conversation in the loft that they can't do this any more. That they should just go and she'll turn herself in. Maybe it would have eased the pain a little easier for both of them. In the episode before when Fiona said she should disappear. Maybe she should have until Anson was brought down. However, Michael couldn't see past anything other than the fact that he could lose her. Sorry if that doesn't make much sense. I'm not good in putting things into words.
Shooting Anson of course would have put an end to his manipulation, but it wouldn't have made the situation for her or Michael any better. They would have had a murder charge to contend with.
You're right, Anson had them in a no-win situation. It's what he wanted to do and in a way he won because Fiona is out of Michael's life (temporarily). He wants Michael to suffer. (Now it's time for Michael to shove right back).

To all shippers. My friend Nikki Nair created this video for Michael and Fiona on youtube. The song is called "As you turn away" by Lady Antebellum and it is absolutely beautiful. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=_2uMs5hPIyw, TO me this is the perfect song for how season 5 ended. I cry every time I see this. I have posted this on two other USA thread posts too.
I'm a little late getting to this post; only been on the boards a few weeks. Just watched it for the first time, and I'm typing with tears in my eyes. Thank you, noellem, for posting this beautiful journey of Michael and Fiona's love.

You're welcome. It sounds crazy I know, but the first time I watched this video, I balled my eyes out. I hate seeing them separated. The ending of Fail Safe is so hard to watch. Glad you enjoyed the vid.

But I am a bit confused about the time line, if Michael met his ex fiance in 1997 I would have expected Michael Fiona meet a little earlier than 2003
