Hey y'all I'm here and while I support the Frances Goren Library project, I am also supporting the strike (the subject of this thread)
Here's some info on how you can support the strike if you want to (and most of this won't cost a thing):
*Send an email to mbaissues@wgaeast.org Tell them you're a CIPhille or addict and ask what you can do to help. You can also let other shows you watch know you're supporting them
*Read Deadline Hollywood Daily for (almost) 24/7 updates on the strikes as they happen. CI folks are striking in big notable numbers with the WGA East (or WGAE as the insiders call it). You can email Nikki Finke and thank her for her coverage as well as post in her blog threads about how you support the writers of CI (and your other favorite shows)
Bolded items from this DHD post are relevant to CI fans and Law & Order universe fans
QUOTE
WGA East strikers displayed a giant inflatable rat [in front of Rockefeller Center, corporate home of NBC Universal] as picketers shouted: "No contract, no shows!" Walking the line in NYC were Tom Fontana ['Homicide: Life On The Street'], Kevin Wade, Adam Brooks, Warren Leight [CI's current show runner], John Patric Shanley, Jon Robin Baitz, Charlie Rubin, Tina Fey, Eric Overmyer, Doug McGrath, and many writers from the staff of Conan, the staff of John Stewart, the staff of Colbert, the staff of SNL (inluding several performers), the staff of Letterman, the staff of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the New York staff of Law & Order [there is also an LA office for Wolf Studios for the mothership], the staff of Monk and on and on and on.
and post your support of CI's writers and staff in their comments threads. United Hollywood is a joint blog written by some of the writers themselves meant to keep WGA members informed about the strike. A friendly comment or three there couldn't hurt.
Great mainstream media coverage of the strike is taking place at the LA Times's Show Tracker blog
but if someone graphically inclined wants me to put a similarly styled banner directed at CI fans on my blog, I'll do it and I'll encourage other bloggers and fan sites I know to run the banner on their sites.
As far as sending the strikers pizzas or coffees or bad weather gear or what have you, I don't yet know how to do that, or if it's possible but if I can figure out a way to get at least our emails and letters into the CI staff's hands I'll let y'all know. I know money here is tight for a lot of folks, but I'm thinking emails and letters would be appreciated and shouldn't cost too much to send.
I also don't know if the CI staff is going to keep picketing at Rockefeller Center or will be picketing at their production offices in the Chelsea Piers area of NYC or both but I'm looking into this. If there is picketing going on in both places it would be nice to get our show of support delivered to both places.
If you are a fan living in NYC or LA you can of course go down to any of the protest sites and say hello to striking writers and staffs and that you support them. The Rockefeller Center site seems to be attracting the most mainstream media attention. Also if you know someone who works 'below the line' i.e. a crew member of a TV show or a movie you can offer them your support as well. God bless the crew members because they are very ordinary folks like most of the posters here and a lot of them never will make as much money as the better known writers will (although the median rate of pay for a writer is only $5,000 a year which means that 50% of the WGA's writers make $5,000 or less than that a year and the poverty line for a single person is just a little below $10,000 so that means that a lot of the WGA's writers literally would be poor if all they had to depend on for income was their earnings from their writings) and yet so far most of the crews are supporting the writers even though it means no income for the crew either.
Anyway those are some ideas off the top of my head...which is swimming with all the stuff I'm involved in today (it's election day here in my county, I'm still looking into what killed my cat and filing an action against a vet, I'm trying to catch up on where things stand with the Frances Goren Library and get stuff done there, I have read almost nothing here at the CI boards since Halloween, and the household chores are going begging).
But God bless the WGA anyway...they've got my support.

LOL I know it's a lot to take in at once (I was up late last night catching up on the strike sites, posting my support to various blogs etc).
I noticed that the ladies at The Reel are staying on top of Strike Coverage as well but their sources are more mainstream (and the writers aren't happy with how they're being covered by the news divisions of the same big companies against which they are striking) but let me give The Reel a plug anyway

Vault - That last link... I have to agree... Goddess Bless Warren Leight.
"Unlike the 1988 strike, this stoppage comes down to one clear issue for most writers, Leight said: "They know if they don't stand up now out here, there will be no residuals in five to 10 years. It's a one-issue strike."
Well I can't find where I wrote my feelings about the strike before, so I'll just have to write again. I'm going to summarize a bit though...
Corporate monkeys don't want to give up any money to the people who make the shows happen. Hard working people, who give of themselves (creation is always like that if it's worth anything), to make these shows, their moneymakers, happen.
They have FINALLY realized the internet is NOT a fad, that online media distribution is only going to get bigger, and are now working to keep as much of that new money as they can. Now that they've at last caught the Web Train like the rest of the world did 3-5 years ago...
Now also that home video/DVD markets have long been realized as a growth market that is again, only getting bigger, the writers want some of their due. They took a cut on what should have been their fair share back in the 80's when video first came out to help that market survive into long-term viability. It's now a multi-BILLION dollar market. Corporate doesn't want to give more money. They figure the writers have been living with status-quo for so long that they're not going to change now. So the writers do what they have to do to get their fair share back.
I know that this strike could hurt my fave shows. But it's more important to care about the people behind the shows, the writer who do the hard work of creating new content, the crew guys who build the sets, put up lights, haul gear, drive all over town looking for the perfect prop. The strike might be the writers now, but I applaud EVERYONE in the business who's throwing in their support. The stand must be made that everyone in the process is important, and they will not be pushed around by corporate greed.
These corporations are making money hand over fist from these people, and then dither over pennies. Pennies that really matter to them, since they seem to be barely making a living in some cases...
I'm going to sign off there before I get into an even bigger rant on the cult of celebrity and money...

thanks so much for all the information and i definitly am on the side of the wirters with this. As much as i hate to see production stop on shows, film and TV writers deserve more recognition for all the long hours they put in writing, editing, and making the shows we watch witty, smart, and interesting.
p.s. i'm so sorry about your cat.

I'm wondering how else to let the CI writers know we support 'em Janx
I'm thinking that maybe if TV show fans wore red T shirts (the color of the WGA's strike T shirts) on a scheduled day, had their pictures taken in them and posted them online, etc and flooded the media with the idea that fans were going to wear red shirts to support their shows's writers (and maybe even considered skipping TV for 24 hours during sweeps), that might get the writers some attention they need and scare the heck out of the producers, the networks and the movie studios. If we don't watch during sweeps that would really throw off the networks's revenue calculations for advertisers.
I have another idea I'm considering based on the Save 'Jericho' peanuts campaign that would also get some serious attention.
Strike on guys and gals

Second I need y'all to brainstorm with me if you do support the writers...how do we get the media to pay attention to us.
Must log off in a few to go and vote...and I'm going to see where my red T shirts and sweatshirts are

Well i think boycotting reality TV is a good place to start, since that will be the only thing left (of course i kind of think that needs to be abolished anyway--they're like crack). I agree boycotting networks during sweeps could be a nice little hit to their...ego...or just boycott the major networks all together and revert to the old past time of reading.
Also (this may not get us notice but it could show support) those of us who write fan fiction regularly could stop posting new chapters/stories until the strike ends....but i don't know how others would feel about that, but it could be an option. -shrugs-
I think wearing red...even it's a like a button or something would be a nice gesture as well to show support.

first.. janx.. I loved your rant.. so rant on sister.. would love to read that celeb thing.. put it in off topic.
second.. hey I think the stoppage of fanfiction is a great idea.. I know it might not mean a lot to the studios.. but a lot of people read fanfic.. and it would give them a little taste even in the cyber world.. "hey.. no new epis here either".. I think it would be a great show of support to the writers if they found out about it.. sort of a show of solidarity.. I was about to enter a chapter in mine.. but I'm gonna hold off.

thanks...i think it would show solidarity as well. Even if ff writers didn't want to wait out the whole strike, they could agree to not post for a month or so to show support since there's no telling how long the strike could last. And it would make more fans aware of the strike/situation.

Well, I guess I'll have to hold off my debut until after the strike... if it ends. What do we do if they bust the strike? I my memory serves, this has happened before. Real life justice is rare in the Entertainment Industry.
The writers and production staff suffer the most.

What You Should Do: Picket Duty WGAE November 07, 2007
Join your fellow writers on the picket line on Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Chelsea Piers in New York City. Wednesday, November 7th, the WGAE will be picketing Chelsea Piers in NYC from 9:00am – 5:00pm. Directions are below. We will be meeting on West Street/West Side Hwy. across from the Piers between 20th and 21st Streets.
We ask that all members sign up to picket for a minimum of three shifts per week, and encourage members to attend more if possible. There are two shifts per day; 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Your contract captain will be in touch about your shift. If you do not have a captain, please send an email to picket@wgaeast.org to sign up for your shifts for the rest of this week. Please include your name and the times and dates you are signing up for. Wear your WGAE shirt if you have one. We’ll also have extra shirts on hand if you don’t have one.
We will continue to picket various locations around New York City every day. Check your email and the website daily for updated location information. To receive location updates via text message to your cellphone, send an email with your name and cell number to picket@wgaeast.org. If you are an East member currently in the Los Angeles area, please visit the Writers Guild West website at www.wga.org for picket locations.
Directions to Chelsea Piers Chelsea Piers 23rd Street and the Hudson River New York City
If you are using public transportation in New York City, click here for subway and map directions. In the new window, enter your starting address in the "Start Address" section on the left. Use the dropdown menus at the bottom of the page to customize your search. Courtesy of HopStop.
All vehicles enter the Chelsea Piers directly from the southbound lanes of Route 9A at the entrance opposite 23rd Street. There is a "Chelsea Piers Only" access road exiting from the southbound lane of the highway. Traffic is one-way only along the Access Roadway, with three (3) staggered parking booths at both the entrance and exit to the Complex. Click here for Parking rates.
Taxi pick-up and drop-off locations are located at Pier 61 and Pier 60 along the East Roadway.
In other less exciting news...given the fact that we may be seeing some CI SVU and mothership peeps out on the picket lines at Chelsea Piers in a few hours from now
Ain't It Cool News is giving some love to showrunners who are respecting the strike (and Warren Leight's LA Times blog post is specifically mentioned)
Rene Balcer (our Room To Read champion) is on board, you all have previously read about Warren Leight and the CI staff actually spotted walking the picket line at the Monday NYC protests in front of Rockefeller Center and Neal Baer SVU's showrunner is actually on the negotiating team for the WGA (as is Ed Solomon, the screenwriter of 'Men In Black')
So if you are in NYC and see this critter:
You will know that you have bumped into the WGA East strikers
According to the following blog post at the LA Times's Show Tracker blog:
"The rat made an appearance Monday at Rockefeller Center[corporate home of NBC Universal] and will probably follow the striking writers across New York this week as they picket in front of Chelsea Piers[where CI, SVU and the mothership all have production offices], Time Warner Center and News Corp. headquarters."
Yes ladies and gentlemen it looks like the picketers will in fact be visiting our CI production team's home turf...I am trying to figure out which day that is because that would be the logical day for us to show our support for our CI writers (and the crew and the actors)
The Vault
PS I predict we'll see some CI cast members hanging out in support of the Chelsea Piers pickets when those happen
PPS I am working on an idea that would really drive home the point that the writers's demands are so not outrageous that we fans could actually step up and do what the AMPTP is too greedy or lazy to do...I'll post later with my idea

Bump to top...today is the day to wear something red. If you can take a picture of yourself in your red finery and post it here, go for it. My digital camera is shot and I don't think I could get a photo developed fast enough but I am wearing a red fleece top.
As a consolation, I am working with other fandoms online and have created this back-up site for those who want to support the strike in case our normally lenient and tolerant hosts at USA decide to kill this strike discussion thread:
If you have something you want to say to the CI writers this thread linked above or here if the thread remains unlocked might be a good place to post to (hint...I emailed the picket captains at WGAE headquarters with an email message I'm hoping they'll print out and pass along to any CI folks on the picket lines...I will put that in a post on my blog so as not to be too offensive to our USA hosts.
One disturbing story I came across (that I understand The Drudge Report just picked up )

the back t-shirt is pretty hilarious...i think for falacci it would be: or no more red-headed (temporary) partners
eames is a hard one...i would say: or no more snark, or no more low-cut sweaters
